Influenced by African rhythms, European dance styles, and the syncopated beats of ragtime and blues music, jazz dance emerged as a popular social and performance dance form in the US. What keeps me inspired on my fitness journey? Dance. I love to dance because it takes me away to a whole new world. I feel free, light as a feather, and at my happiest as a dancer. I was self-taught for years and then I made the plunge to dance at @alvinailey to learn more about the art. It changed my life. My perspective on the culture of movement and fitness. I could add ballet to my fitness routine along with jazz and hip hop. His school inspired me to gain the idea that “Dance is for Everybody.” It lead me to the @officialdadance to learn from the great @therealdebbieallen She introduced me to teach my passion to the world, to never stop dancing, and to acknowledge my imperfections as a dancer so I could become better. Under her instruction and leadership sparked a resilience to teach young women to do the same. Dance saved my life. Dance liberated my mind. My favorite fun fact about The Auditorium theatre: For as ornate as this beautiful place is, the light bulbs are simple and exposed. You can thank Frank Floyd Wright for that-who was NOT about that European-centered design aesthetic. Alvin Ailey doesn’t allow video or pics of the performances. So I can’t show you,but I can tell you this: This performance may very well be the best one I’ve seen. The only way I can describe it is…light. As in, the opposite of heavy. Like I have no responsibilities,commitments,or concerns. All I wanted to do was dance. That’s the power of Alvin Ailey. #alvinailey

This is when it all started… she was 6 turning 7 and starting what would become a well built dance career… today she did her next to last competition and I must say it’s a tad bit bittersweet. One of the judges told her today, “Don’t join another dance company (since she’s 18)… go straight to New York!” We will definitely see what the Lord has for her. In the meantime I’m glad to be able to see her dance in college too.
