Today we ran three agility runs in sunny Gjøvik. 😎🌞 We almost missed the first run as the competition was ahead of schedule (and we were a bit late 🙈) and they were already running class 3 when we arrived. We were kindly offered an extra 4 min course walk, so we decided to start anyway. Eventually Amo took one jump from the wrong side, so that was a disq. On the second run Amo still ran a bit handbrake on, but we ended up running clean and got 1st place with certificate (video). 🥳 On the third course I was really late from the second obstacle on all the way to the finish line. Amo dropped one bar (probably because she had to read the numbers as I wasn't showing her anything 🙄) so 5 faults, but as there were no clean runs, we ended up winning that course too. First tryouts ✅ Agility, 2xdisq. and jumping, 5 (refusal). Not perfect if you look at the results, but for us this was a win. My goal for the tryouts was that I would manage to keep my head together and that we would be able run courses where Amo wouldn't get insecure and continue working even though everything wouldn't go smoothly. And that we did. 💪 We have struggled a lot with Amo getting insecure in competitions when the course doesn't flow smoothly or she "makes a mistake", even when it is 100% my fault. My front row girl, who always wants to do things right. ❤ She freezes, starts to bark and just runs beside me, passing all the obstacles. I hate it, to see her getting so confused. Just three weeks ago I sat in the car after one course, crying my eyes out, feeling so bad that I wasn't able to help her, to get her to relax and just run and have fun like she does in training. She didn't even want to play before the runs, that "out of it" she was. And when she gets insecure, I get insecure and freeze. Perfect match. ✌ I decided to run one weekend more in grade three, and if it didn't work out, I would run in grade 1 for a while and drop the tryouts. After that decision something "clicked" and we have run our best runs in grade3 that weekend two weeks ago and now in tryouts. The speed isn't there yet (and the runs are far from perfect), but she doesn't get confused and continues working. And I keep on working. We actually remembered to film our training yesterday! 😃 I'm really happy for the self-confidence and attitude Amo has towards agility nowadays. 💪 She always wants to do the right thing, so getting her to be more independent and building up more obstacle focus for her has required some work, but we are getting there! 🤩 Next thing on our training list are the weaves. Our 3,5 months long break from the competitions ended today. We ran three courses with some good sequences, some minor misunderstandings of where we were supposed to go and a few sheltie spins. 🤪😅 Most importantly we had fun and it was so nice to see so many agility friends again! ❤ And why the break? There has been a lot going on with life in general and my studies so I have prioritized training over competing. We have worked with Amo's independence and self-confidence, but most importantly I have worked a lot with my own competition nerves. I have tendency of being really nervous and freeze totally mentally (and physically) in the middle of the course, and today I managed to run through all three courses. Here's our runs from today. 😊 First one was chaos from the start to the finish as we were a "bit" out of rhytm. 🤪😁 I managed to save the course clean until the second last obstacle where I was handling really lousy and Amo took a refusal. 🙈 We won the course, not that it is something to brag about. 😅 In the start of the second course Amo landed right on top of the bar on the first jump and stumbled quite a bit. 🤕 Due to this she got a bit confused and ran around no. 2 and straight to A-frame, so disq. from there, but otherwise (weaves and seesaw excluded) we managed to do a good run. 😊 I hurt my ankle before third run so @thiesenthomas got to run jumping with Amo. They did a really good run, just one misunderstanding with a tunnel so disq. from there, but otherwise they did so well! 🤩 This was only Amo's third grade 3 competition and I'm really happy to see that I manage to run full class 3 courses with her without things falling apart. You know how sometimes one needs to actually test a stupid idea in real life to figure out that it really is one? Some people need to do that more often than others. Like me. 💁♀️ Today I took a 2,5 hours' run on the trails before rushing to a competition with Amo at our home hall. Smarter people understand just after hearing the plan that it won't work, I needed to test it. ✌🤦♀️ After two agility runs (both pretty ok, just some minor misses) I gave up as I wasn't able to run fast at all and @thiesenthomas took over for the following two jumping courses. First course Amo and Thomas used for getting to know each other (they haven't ran a single course together before 😂) but on the second one they ran Amo's first clean run in class 3 with 1st place and a jumping-certificate! 🥳🥇🎉 (And if you are wondering why on earth we chose a ball cannon of all the prices available... Boys saw the cannon on the price table before our runs and really, really wanted to have one. So I said as a joke that if Amo wins, they get to take that one. We are back from summer holiday also with agility! 🤩 We haven't competed at all and trained just a few times during August, but as we had our first training for this fall season today at @eljanesnie, we are seriously back in business! ✌ One could really feel and see our summer break: my timing was a bit off and our speed wasn't at the top as I think we both felt a bit rusty. 😜 All in all we managed to run some quite good sequences and most importantely, we had fun! 😊 Bing dogwalk was a bit challenging for Amo today (I can't even remember when she has ran on one last time) but also the dogwalk started to work really well after couple of reminders. 😊 It's easy to see that we still need more generalization training done with the dogwalk (differrent surfaces, angles, lenghts of dogwalks) and other contact obstacles and get Amo to be more confident. Our debut in class 3 and a fun weekend full of agility and friends, that's our weekend in short. 🤩 I'm so proud of Amo how she managed to stay focused and work her fluffy a*s off throughout the weekend. ❤ Our record for the weekend was 8 disq in total on the challenging profiles at #janakkalaopen2021, but we had some great runs and there was l good parts on all of our courses. The video is from our last run during the weekend, when we were both already really tired. Despite the long weekend we managed to work hard and ran clean all the way to the 4th last obstscle. 🤩🤩 Handling, lines or speed weren't at our best level but the feeling of running together as a team was just amazing. Training sheltie is a happy sheltie, no matter the weather 🤩😎🌞 . . This summer has been really hot in Finland; the temperature has been around 27 to 30 degrees most of the time. 🌞 Our dogs have been coping the heat very well. Most of the time we continue life as usual; we train agility, go to competitions, take our runs etc. Of course we don't train or go for a run at the warmest time of the day if we have possibility to choose, but if we have training scheduled somewhere, it's very rare that we skip the training due to the heat. We have been getting our dogs used to the heat purposely throughout the spring and early summer. They react to the heat most during the first really warm days of the year, like us people, but as time goes by their bodies get more used to the warmth. One of the biggest factors for a heat stroke is actually if the dog is not used to heat; if one always protects his dogs from the warm temperatures and then goes to that one warm and sunny weekend competition on a heated outdoor ring, there's a big risk that the dog can't tolerate the warmth. 🥵🥵 Naturally on the first warm days we take it more easy with all kinds of physical activity and also later in the summer follow carefully how the dogs are doing during training, train shorter periods at a time and use all kinds of cooling methods before and after the training. There are also big individual differencies between our dogs when it comes to tolerating the heat; where Army gets really warm really easily and can only do short training sessions at a time, Amo tolerates the heat pretty well and cools down afterwards really effectively. 🌞🌡 Enjoy the summer and sunny weather to the fullest! Be wise with your dogs but don't get totally hysterical. On the second run today we both started to be a bit tired after a long weekend and Amo didn't manage to find an easy slalom entry. What is a good training? Is it all about succeeding? Getting into that flow-state of mind and being one with your dog? Or is there room for fail and error? My good training is about being brave. Daring to step outside the comfort zone. Being able to push myself without fear of failing. And being proud of myself to be able to do that. That's the way forward. That's the way to success. And, oh boy that way has been, and still is, hard for me. I have thought I wouldn't be able to do this. To really have goals in agility. I wanted to train for real and compete, but I thought I was meant to be helping others on their way becoming better. Being kind of an assistant. Because I wouldn't be able to do it myself anyway. For such a long time I was convinced I just didn't have what it takes. I didn't have the head or the legs or the speed or just whatever is required to have any chance to become good in agility. No matter what. I also started to believe that. And tell myself that story. Because that it was. A story. But you know, that story has changed. It has taken years and many nicer versions of the story by other people, but I have started to believe. Believe in me. I can do this. I'm not talking about winning and being best. I'm talking about the feeling that I can become better in this. That I can be challenged and I can succeed. And fail. And that's ok too. But at least I tried 100%. Amo and her favourite toys, part 53. 🤪 Amo found a treasure from a ditch yesterday while we were warming up for training. A broken, wet, muddy, so in short: JUST A PERFECT glove! She was carrying it around on our walk with such a pride so we used it also as a reward in training and packed it with us when going home. 😅 Amo is just such a #weirdo when it comes to her favourite toys. 😆 She LOVES tugging and playing with all kinds of rugs and socks and gloves and also leashes, but all the fluffy things are absolute no-no. She runs after them too, but won't take them in her mouth. She also loves to play with solid rubber toys (and wooden sticks), preferrably the ones in malinois-size, so they are big and heavy enough. 💪💪 I just love this dog. Her weirdness, huuuge attitude, willingness to really work her butt off and good motor. But at the same time she's really easy and kind in everyday life and in training. Well that was a run... 🥵🤦♀️ I have had very busy weeks at school, loads of lectures, tests and deadlines. In addition to that Thomas has been sick so I have been taking care of, well, everything. All this combined with too little sleep means that I haven't been feeling like top this week, but stubbornly I have sticked to my training plan. This morning I felt like crap, my heart was racing and I had a headache. However I started to feel better during the day, so late afternoon I decided to go for a run anyway. And do the scheduled interval training. WRONG. It was waaay too hard for my body and mind right now. When I came home I had to lay on the bathroom floor for 20 minutes before I was able to do anything. I should have known better and listened to my body when it was giving such clear signs of overstress, but no, it felt really important to do this training right now. 🤦♀️ In spite of all I try to be kind to myself. Yes, the training was too much, but one training won't hurt me, not that it does any good either. Maybe this was a necessary reminder for me, and now I remember to listen to what my body and mind actually need. My everyday load has been much higher than normal (too high, to be honest) for some weeks now and that has taken its toll. 😕 Luckily after next week things should calm down a bit. Weeks like this are just normal part of life, but it is vital to recognize these situations and then lower the bar wherever it is possible. Make training easier, rest as much as possible, cook very simple meals or buy ready-prepared food, don't stress about cleaning and laundry and most importantly ask for help. You don't have to be a superhuman and excel in everything. Average is good enough! ❤ This is something I'm still learning myself. My precious ninja-sheltie, the dog of my life, is 2 years old today! 🥰🥳 Happy birthday to Amo, a.k.a. Lilla, a.k.a. Amogator 🐊, the spoiled little brat, loving lap dog and the favourite of all the members in our pack (and due to that she gets away with almost everything... 🤪🙈). Henloh! 🖖 Took mommy to do competitions today and yesterday and did mi first agility courses! Many dq:s on those result papers, but mi did mommy and daddy really happy! Mi did very well with all the contacts (after mi found those contact obstacles first, not so easy 🤔) and found also a new gear with mi speed! 💨 Mommy again... Well look yourself. 🤦♀️ Mommy said we keep working with those contacts, take a small "get sheltie under control" -project and then just get more routine from competitions. Mi say we prioritize a project called "just-run-faster-hooman". We are in the middle of grey November and it's muddy and rainy and cold. 🌧🌫☔ In agility competitions and trainings dogs are walked around quite a bit in all kinds of weather conditions as they need to be warmed up and cooled down and warmed up again, and in addition dogs might have to wait in the car pretty long periods at the time. To minimize the risk of muscle stiffness and soft-tissue injuries it is important to keep your dog warm throughout the day. 🌡 We have now been using Non-Stop Dogwear Alpha Jackets on our dogs for a year now and we couldn't be more pleased with them. Jackets fit really well to all our dogs, thanks to their adjustability and wide size range. The jacket holds it's place really well and don't move or slip on the one side of the dog even when they do their craziest run-chase playing in the forest. The jacket has also been 100 % waterproof and really durable. One of our favourite features is also the small opening in the back so dogs can wear their harnesses under the coat!
