📝 R E V I E W 📝 It’s been a while since I last reviewed a whisky — so long that I was unaware anCnoc 12 had been tragically watered down to 40% 💔 From the core range of Knockdhu Distillery, anCnoc (pronounced as [a-nock]) 12 Year Old is matured in a combination of American and European oak barrels and butts. Priced around $55, it’s non-chill filtered and of natural color. The bottle I’m reviewing here is the original 43% ABV expression. Nose: It greets with a refreshing burst of fruitiness. Grilled pineapple, lemon meringue, green apple, honeysuckle, and lychee in syrup. A hint of rose stems emerges over time. The aroma is bright and juicy, striking a good balance between sweetness and tartness. Palate: The arrival is smooth and sweet, with a moderately waxy mouthfeel. I get notes of vanilla bean, key lime, and a touch of balsamic melon salad. It tastes like early summer in a dram. Finish: It evolves beautifully with a medium finish. Sweet to start with. Then comes a gentle oakiness, culminating in a mild, lingering spicy tingle. Final Thought: This whisky is such a hidden gem! It ticks all the boxes — accessibility, affordability, and deliciousness. What I particularly love about this anCnoc is its overall profile. It offers a pleasantly unique aroma and taste without being overly funky. Unfortunately, the 40% watered-down version doesn’t quite replicate that distinctive deliciousness. Needless to say, I’ll certainly be stocking up on the 43% bottling! Notes on a sample – The anCnoc vintage 1975 26 year old, 48,2%, from Highland Selection. This sample was generously gifted to me by @away_days321 After having been blown away by the anCnoc 16 year old, I was eager to try this vintage 1975. Nose: Floral and fruity, yellow and green fresh fruits. Ginger spice and oak. There is a depth and intensity here revealing old age as well as an old wood note, slightly dirty but in no way off putting. Palate: Zesty, citrusy, sweet and oaky. Apples, pears, lemon, lime and mellow spice in balance on the arrival. Oaky and slightly drying development. It is intense and bold on the palate and I also get a summer floral feel. Long oaky finish with mellow spice, so nice. Wow this was really good, but I must say I think the 16 year old is slightly better but I’m splitting hairs here. Ancnoc 12y - Highland Snglemalt Scotch Whisky - 40% abv No aroma um cítrico com laranja, madeira seca, uva verde, uma baunilha um pouco artificial tipo a essência mesmo e uma maçã. No sabor um ataque um pouco aguado, doce de frutas maçã, surpreendentemente fica um pouco oleoso na boca mesmo com 40%, doce baunilha, um apimentado muito suave. Finalização curta apimentado mais presente e uma persistência no na língua não muito agradável. Notes on a sample – The anCnoc 16 year old, 46%. This sample was generously gifted to me by @away_days321 , it is a lovely bourbon oak matured anCnoc of yesteryear. Nose: Wow! So, so lovely! White and green fresh fruits, confectionary. Grapes, lime dipped in sweet syrup, juicy melon, floral honey and some kind of exotic marmalade, and… lovely jelly beans. Also some mellow light spice and bourbon oak vanilla. It’s a noser for sure, so nice. What a treat! Palate: Viscous and sweet arrival, oh boy… all those white and green fruits from the nose show up on the palate, there are some pears in there but I would call this fruitiness more on the exotic side with the melon and white grape and lime marmalade. On the development some nice and balanced spice notes show up along with vanilla. Really pleasant finish where the oak notes prevents this from becoming too sweet. Wow, what a well put together single malt. Such a treat! I mean I knew anCnoc did sherried whisky well having had both the 18 and the 24, but this bourbon oak maturation is really quite something. Confusion reigns in the world of Scotch. One fine day, someone realised (wasn't me), that the distillerys of Knockdhu and Knockando were similar in name. Why it took 148 years to realise this is not known, but when Knockdu was bought by new owners recently, they changed the name to AnCnoc to avoid confusion with Knockando. To add to the general confusion, AnCnoc is a Highland whisky that sits on the boundary of Speyside. Its postal address is in Speyside, although the distillery is not. One way to avoid this confusion is to drink a few drams of this lovely 18YO AnCnoc - rich vanilla, subtle barley, honey sweetness.
