Notes on a sample – Glen Mhor 28 year old from Rare Malts 76/05, 51,9%. Here’s another sample provided by @away_days321 this one was a bit challenging but still a top notch whisky. Nose: Lots of orchard fruits, red apples mainly. Also a hint of a floral note together with citrus, orange perhaps. Oak, vanilla, very mellow spice. A balance of fruits. Very nice… really, almost a 10/10 on the nose. Palate: Fruity arrival with oak presence. On the development that oak builds and builds and tannins come rushing in. I’m gonna need some water here. With water it improves on the palate, the tannins are still there but they’re not overpowering and the oakspice comes through more. On the arrival with water the red apples are now accompanied with a touch of light dried fruits. This was quite a difficult malt, the nose is amazing but the palate, for me, requires just the right amount of water in order to balance out the heavy oak influence. 1975 Millburn 25yo Rare Malts Selection 61.9% DETAILS: Not everyday I get to taste a bottle born before me! Distilled in 1975 and bottle in October of 2001. The Rare Malts series from Diageo selects casks from closed distilleries, either mothballed or demolished. In this case, it’s the latter. On top of that, Millburn never released many bottles or casks even during their operations, so their juice surely justifies the name “Ream Malts”. NOSE: Extremely malty and barley sugar driven with a beautiful polyphony of wax, oil, and a hint of velvety peat. Old leather bound books, musty library, and some rich, dark pipe tobacco. Myriad of dried fruits with apricot, sultana, and pineapples. Herbed sea salt butter and fresh croissant giving way to heavy cream and marzipan. Some pine cone, eucalyptus, and camphor oil to finish the amazing nose. TASTE: Rich citrus honey, barley sugar, and citron marmalade rush at your palate. Vibrant, impactful, and some how velvety and balanced at the same time. A captivating interplay of mustiness, beeswax, and earthy mineral. A medley of tropical fruits and citrus, with a hint of dried fruits and peppery spices. Burnt toffee, muscovado, and old leather wrapping things up. FINISH: A refreshing yet complex and lengthy finish, with oak and leather asserting dominance over subtle floral and minty undertones. The peppery notes linger and mixing well with the roasted nuts and notes of chewing tobacco. A little bit of astringency at the end. CONCLUSION: Nothing short of amazing. Not all Rare Malt selections hit the 90 point range for me, but this one is easily one of the best whiskies I’ve ever had. A captivating aroma, an explosive, complex, and layered palate, and a dynamic finish. This whisky hits top marks in all aspects. SCORE: 95 90+: Can’t have enough of it. Might pay secondary $! 80-89: Great stuff I’d buy a bottle of. Recommended! 70-79: Solid, I’d drink it at a bar but u’r not missing out. 60-69: Meh~, would drink if there's no other option. 0-59: Just flush it.
Caol Ila Distillery Exclusive 2017 Bottling 58.8% DETAILS: A distillery Exclusive bottled in 2017 with no age statement. One of 3000 bottles. NOSE: Earthy, inky peat on arrival. Floral honey, barley sugar, malty. There’s quite a bit of fresh clipped grass and vegetal characters. Sweet fresh orchard fruits, green apples, apricots, fresh jujube. Bready and buttery as well. TASTE: Floral with loads of honey, white grape juice, and again, myriad of orchard fruits. Green apples, pears, and some tropical melons as well. The peat smoke is a bit stronger than the nose. Honey baked ham, maple syrup beacon, and lots of muscovado. FINISH: Long and intense, with lingering sweetness and a subtle tartness. The peat persists, and now turning more ashy and smoky. Drying at the end. CONCLUSION: While its bold flavors and aroma may appeal to fans of peated whiskies, its lack of balance and finesse detract from its overall appeal. SCORE: 80 90+: Can’t have enough of it. Might pay secondary $! 80-89: Great stuff I’d buy a bottle of. Recommended! 70-79: Solid, I’d drink it at a bar but u’r not missing out. 60-69: Meh~, would drink if there’s no other option. 0-59: Just flush it.
What is this Single Blend all about? What does it mean? Well, this is Bridgeland's flagship bend. It's a blend of rye, single malt and Taber corn whiskies. Each whisky was distilled, barrelled and aged separately and blended to produce this expression. Bottled at an easy 44.1% abv. If you love a good rye whisky, this is for you! The rye notes are very forward on the nose and palate and is well supported by the malted barely and corn components. What you get is an aromatic, sweet and smooth, easy sipper. I also picked up a nice dark chocolate note that was a nice surprise and added another layer to this whisky. As we were watching tv last night (which is a rare occasion for the Mrs and I, with two little ones) and sipping on this dram, we both quite enjoyed it. It was light, but full of flavour. It was definitely a hit for the both of us. If you get a chance to pick this up, I’d highly recommend it. Cheers everyone! 2008 Caol Ila 11yo Dramfool 1st Fill PX Hogshead Finish 58.0% DETAILS: This was released at the same time with another “Cola Ali” from Dramfool I reviewed not long ago. Difference being that the previous one was finished in an Oloroso Hogshead while this one was finished in a PX Hogshead. Let’s see how they’re different. NOSE: Not as heavily Sherried as the previous DF bottle from the Oloroso Hogshead, but still boasts a Sherry-drive nose. Notes of brown sugar, muscovado, and milk chocolate dominate, accompanied by a sweeter profile of toffee, sweetened cold brew, and rum raisins. The peat presence is earthy and musty, with distinct maritime and saline characteristics. TASTE: Sweet Sherry arrival with rum raisins and figs taking center stage. Layers of toffee and chocolate as the nose promised, mixed with quite a bit of oak and the tannins it brings. Minty bitterness, chewing tobacco, and some musty leather-bound books. Some candied ginger and orange zest. The peat is here, but not quite as pronounced as expected for a young Caol Ila. FINISH: The finish is long and lingering, with the oak asserting itself further alongside roasted nuts, ash, and tar. There’s a notable astringency at the tail end. CONCLUSION: This dram leans towards the sweeter side, thanks to its first-fill PX finish. While it offers plenty of complexity, some may find the oak influence slightly heavy-handed. Nonetheless, it remains a commendable whisky, particularly for those acquiring it near its retail price. However, it might not warrant pursuit at auction. SCORE: 82 90+: Can’t have enough of it. Might pay secondary $! 80-89: Great stuff I’d buy a bottle of. Recommended! 70-79: Solid, I’d drink it at a bar but u’r not missing out. 60-69: Meh~, would drink if there’s no other option. 0-59: Just flush it.
