Tonight I'm drinking a great wee mini's set from Ardnamurchan while watching @inveruriewhisky and their live blether on YouTube! I picked up this pack of 4 bottles from their shop last week and there's no better time to crack it open than listening to Cat and Mike chat away with their guest. This week they sat with Thomas Cuthbert, brand ambassador for Morrison Distillers. The biggest surprise with these 4 bottles has been how much I enjoyed the Sherry Cask release. Its something I'm slowly starting to appreciate but the Ardnamurchan bottle was so easy to enjoy! Warm, spicy and sweet but floral aswell with a nice honey note. The Sautern cask didn't disappoint! I knew it would be my taste and it was spot on! The rum cask was a surprise aswell. It didn't feel like a big, sweet spiced rum cask. There was a big woody flavour, maybe from the base whisky of Ardnamurchan and I really enjoyed it! Finally, the classic singlemalt is really good. The slightest touch of char, a whisp of smoke but a beautifully balanced liquid. A little sweetness, a little wood, a little floral... it all comes together to make something big in flavour. Trying them all side by side is great. Really seeing the difference in flavours, going back to the original Ardnamurchan for reference has been great! I've been buying a lot of minis lately as it's allowing me to trying so many different distilleries. I highly recommend buying and tasting the wee bottles when you can, it makes exploration so much more affordable. Thanks again to @inveruriewhisky for the blether and finding this great pick for a dram tonight. Enjoy your whisky journey folks, you never know where it will take you! I had a very nice experience at @micildistillery . This microdistillery is located in the city of Galway, west of Irleand. Actually, to reach the distillery one must go through a pub, the @oslobarsalthill , which has a nice selection of craft beers from @galway_bay_brewery , before arriving at Micil, that is right in the back. . Tom, a very good distillery tour guide, managed to be didactic and entertaining in a quite small space that consisted of a mezzanine with a bar and table from which one could look down and see the distillery. First he successfully linked the family of the distillery owner to a poitín distilling lineage. Then it was time to give a bit of an historic background to this liquid, “the grandfather of Irish whiskey”. I was quite satisfied as it was the first time during this trip that I saw poitín having the respect I think it deserves. And all of that wasn’t without any reason, as Micil started distilling poitín in 2016. And their Heritage expression is simply delicious. With a mash bill of 80% peated malted barley and 20% peated malted oats, being distilled in a hybrid still with plates and infused with a local botanical called bog bean, this bottle reminded me of some of the best mezcals I’ve ever had. After the poitín, it was time to taste their sourced whiskies. We started with the Earls Island, a very good single pot still distilled at Great Northern Distillery that the guys finished in Bordeaux and Ex-peated quarter casks. There was great spiciness in this one. Next we tasted Inverin, their blend finished in PX, quarter and peated poitín casks. Supposedly put together as a homage to the style of whiskey made in Connemara in the old days, that was also quite good, fruity and with only a hint of smoke. Then Tom went down to the distillery and gave some explanation about their poitín and whiskey making processes and the tour came to and end with a tasting of their good sweet Irish cream liquor. . Returning from a few weeks in Italy, I encountered these offerings at the airport duty-free (along with several other cool pickups). I have seen these before but never felt compelled to pick up in lieu of more commercially known houses. Review #283 - SMWS Distillery 68 Rare Release 'Bake-Off' - Blair Athol 14 Year Blair Athol distillery is generally associated with ex-bourbon casks when the product is headed for blending, while the distillate meant for single malt often gets sherry cask maturation - that's the case here. The Scotch Malt Whisky Society aged the spirit used in this release in first fill Spanish oak ex-Oloroso sherry hogsheads, as well as refill hogsheads. After 14+ years, these casks came together to give us a strength of 53.5% ABV. Instead of the usual single cask releases that we usually get from the Society, this is a small batch release, blended together for the SMWS' Celebration of the Highland Spirit in 2023. Nose: Caramel and brown sugar up front - dark, sweet, and rich. Very woody, almost bourbon-like, with some pepper and lots of baking spice. Hints of orange, fig, and prune linger in the background; it's a little bit nutty, and at times, there's a molasses note. Palate: Nice and warm, and quite woody. Sharper pepper, oak, cardamom, and nutmeg present at first, and then there's toasted nuts, wood polish, and cinnamon spice. Again, fruits are a background note: lemon tang and orange, specifically. Hints of savory flavors, astringent tannins, and at the end, an Amaro taste. Finish: Orange is the dominant note in the finish, both orange tea and the fruit. Soft caramel and wood spice mingle, and in the aftertaste, syrup lingers. It's a cozy finish. Update: Highland Park Ice Edition 17 Year Single Malt . . My husband and I have a pretty big whisky collection, so finishing a bottle of whisky takes us some time. I want to catalog our empties to see if the last sip was as enjoyable as the first. . We received this Highland Park Ice Edition 17 Year Single Malt as a gift for my husband’s birthday 3.5 years ago and we finally finished it this past weekend. . Tasting Notes Nose: pineapple, spices and vanilla Palate: ginger, vanilla, fruit, spices and pear smoke Finish: creamy with notes of oak and peat ABV: 53.9% Cost: $300-$400 . I’m a huge fan of Highland Park and yes, I really enjoyed and loved this whisky. What I loved about it, the tropical notes. I find these notes slightly uncommon (in my opinion) in peated whiskies. Although this was a gift, the question is still, would we buy this if we had the choice? The answer is no. . We did enjoy this whisky, but it was also not one we reached for often. Nor one we will miss now that we have finished the bottle. It was good, and the last sip was as good as the first but, we kept forgetting we had it, that to me says a lot. It was great to have tried, but it doesn’t need to make an appearance on our shelves again. . Finish: Medium length, thick and syrupy with notes of red berries, fruits, toasted grains, a certain sweetness. 🥃 A beautiful dram with great flavours.
