The Vedanta Society of Northern California is a Hindu spiritual organization headquartered in San Francisco, founded by Swami Vivekananda in 1900. It is notable for having built the first Hindu temple in the Western hemisphere.Vedanta Societies are based upon the teachings of Sri Ramakrishna, a 19th-century Indian monk who practiced Vedanta, one of the six schools of Hindu philosophy. Swami Vivekananda, a key figure in the propagation of Hinduism abroad, founded the first United States Vedanta society in New York in 1894, and went on to establish the San Francisco society in 1900. On Jan. 7, 1906, under the leadership of Swami Trigunatitananda, construction of the organization’s temple was completed in the Cow Hollow neighborhood. It was the first ever Hindu temple in the Western hemisphere. Months later, the temple withstood the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. On December 28, 1914, Swami Trigunatitananda was giving a Sunday service at the temple when he was attacked with explosives by a 14-year-old former student of his. The student died on the scene, while Swami Trigunatitananda died of his injuries two weeks later. In 1959, the Society opened a “New Temple” in the Pacific Heights neighborhood, which now serves as the main building for the Society’s activities. Conversely, the original temple is now called the “Old Temple”, and remains a residence for monks and a venue for religious services. #oldtemple #oldvedantatemple #cowhollow #filbertstreet #victorianeraarchitecture #oldhouselove #archilovers #archihunter #architourism #sanfrancisco #sfneighborhoods #hindutemple #vedantasocietyofnortherncalifornia #architecturephotography #sacredplaces 📸6pics @vedantasociety_bali

The Alhambra Theater, built of reinforced concrete with unprotected steel trusses, was designed by Miller & Pflueger in the Moorish Revival style, which became popular after the 1915 Panama-California Exposition in San Diego and quickly replaced the Mission Revival style. Timothy Pflueger derived the flamboyant ornamentation from Mexican sources which, in turn, had been derived from Spanish sources. The Castro Theater and Mission High School are two other examples of this style. In the 1920s, movie palaces created fantasy environments to match the movies on screen. The Alhambra’s Moorish castle decor was part of a trend to build theaters that conjured romantic, far away places: Mayan temples. Oriental palaces, ancient Egyptian tombs. Serving Cow Hollow, Russian Hill and surrounding neighborhoods, the Alhambra Theater provided an alternative the larger, swankier movie theaters on Market Street while still offering its patrons fantasy and elegance. Movies remained the number one source of entertainment throughout the Depression and Word War II, but during the post-war era, television caused attendance to diminish. In the mid-fifties, a cinemascope screen replaced the original Alhambra screen and concealed the massive proscenium arch. In 1974, the theater was “twinned” by dividing the auditorium in half with a cinder-block wall and painted plaster board suspended from the ceiling, covering the plaster dome. The “twinning” was an attempt to make up lost profit s. When this approach failed, partially because the dome could not be soundproofed, the lessee tried a different method to lure movie-goers back to the theater. ln 1988, they removed the wall that divided the auditorium and carefully restored the theater’s elaborate interior. Now operates as a Crunch Fitness gym. #upperpolk #sanfrancisco #moorishstyle #moorishrevival #timothypflueger #timothypfluegerarchitect #millerandpflueger #alhambratheatre #crunchfitness #adaptivereuse #retrovibes #archilovers #archihunter #archi_ologie #architecturephotography #architourism #worldartdecomonth #elevatedperspective #elevatedperspective #archidrone #jmhdroning 📸🚁6slides, last is video

Adjacent to SanFrancisco’s Stock Exchange Tower on the corner of Pine and Sansome sits the Pacific Coast Stock Exchange. Initially designed in a neoclassical style by architect Milton Dyer in 1915 it was remodeled in 1930 by Miller and Pflueger. Over the stock exchange floor, Pfluger mounted a ceiling composed of interconnected sheet metal strips above which he used indirect lighting to soften the edges and reduce shadows made by traders on the floor below. This feature was again on a much larger scale at The Paramount Theatre in Oakland. #artdeco #pacificstockexchangebuilding #timothypfleuger #worldartdecomonth #archilovers #archihunter #archi_ologie #architourism #financialdistrict #paramounttheateroakland #1930sarchitecture #artdecosocietycalifornia #equinoxgym #architecturephotography #equinoxgym #ceilingswithfeelings #sheetmetaldesign #sheetmetalart 📸10pics

Trinity & St. Peter’s Episcopal Church ; 1620 Gough St. at Bush/Cathedral Hill neighborhood. This is Trinity’s fourth building. Its cornerstone was laid in 1892. Inspired by Durham Cathedral in England, it was designed by architect Arthur Page Brown who, some eighteen months later, designed the iconic San Francisco Ferry Building. Trinity was built on bedrock with (then) innovative structural steel, and was thus able to withstand the Great Earthquake of 1906 and, much later, the Loma Prieta Earthquake of 1989. #arthurpagebrown #arthurpagebrownarchitect #archilovers #praisehimonhigh #ecclesiasticalarchitecture #archidrone #jmhdroning #aerialvideography #religiosity #gothicrevivalarchitecure #architecturephotography #architourism #sfneighborhoods #cathedralhill #djimavic3 📸 🚁 3 slides, 3rd is video

The Berkeley City Club is a historic hotel at 2315 Durant Avenue in Berkeley, California. It was commissioned as the club house of the Berkeley Women’s City Club, organized in 1927 to contribute to social, civic, and cultural progress. This private club is no longer restricted to women, and the club house building is available to the public at large for overnight stays, weddings, and other occasions. On the second floor, the club also houses Julia’s Restaurant and Morgan’s Bar & Lounge. The building, constructed in 1929 and officially opened in 1930, is one of the outstanding works of noted California architect Julia Morgan. The San Francisco-born Morgan was the first woman to gain admission and earn a certificate from the Ecole de Beaux-Arts in Paris (1902) and the first licensed female architect in California. She designed nearly 100 women’s-organization buildings throughout her career. Her interpretation of Moorish and Gothic elements in the Berkeley Women’s City Club created a landmark of California design. It is registered as California Historical Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Berkeley City Club Conservancy cares for the building itself. Along with many other stewards of Julia Morgan properties, BCCC joined in the California Cultural and Historical Endowment’s Julia Morgan 2012 Project. #berkeleycityclub #moorishrevivalarchitecturestyle #gothicrevivaldesign #architecturalelements #privateclub #womensmovement #ca1929 #archilovers #archihunter #archi_ologie #interiorarchitecture #interiorsphotography #landmarkarchitecture #berkeleycalifornia #architourism #architecturephotography 📸10slides, last is video @berkeleycityclub

#fbf Since I haven’t been getting out and about as much recently, I am looking back at my archives. This is the former Ridgley estate down the road from my place. Built by descendants of Chancellor Livingston in the 1850s, the house was enlarged circa 1906 by the firm of Lord and Hewlett (perhaps best known for designing Clark’s folly, the famed Senator William A Clark behemoth on Fifth Avenue). The mansion is now owned by the Carmelite order, who keep it well-maintained with many of the original architectural details intact #upstateny #historicarchitecture #historichouse #historicmansion #gildedagemansions #countryestates #oldhouselove #oldhousecharm #archidaily #architour #archilovers #architourism #hudsonvalley

The principal architect was Arthur Brown, Jr., of Bakewell & Brown, whose attention to the finishing details extended to the doorknobs and the typeface to be used in signage. Brown also designed the San Francisco War Memorial Opera House, Veterans Building, Temple Emanuel, Coit Tower and the Federal office building at 50 United Nations Plaza. The building’s vast open space is more than 500,000 square feet and occupies two full city blocks. It is 390 ft between Van Ness Avenue and Polk Street, and 273 ft between Grove and McAllister Streets. Its dome, which owes much to Mansart’s Baroque domes of the Val-de-Grâce and Les Invalides in Paris, rises 307.5 ft above the Civic Center Historic District. It is 19 ft higher than the United States Capitol, and has a diameter of 112 ft, resting upon 4 x 50 ton and 4 x 20 ton girders, each 9 ft deep and 60 ft long. The building as a whole contains 7,900 tons of structural steel from the American Bridge Company of Ambridge, Pennsylvania near Pittsburgh. It is faced with Madera County granite on the exterior, and Indiana sandstone within, together with finish marbles from Alabama, Colorado, Vermont, and Italy. Much of the statuary is by Henri Crenier. The upper levels of the Rotunda are public and handicapped accessible. Opposite the grand staircase, on the second floor, is the office of the Mayor. Bronze busts of former Mayor George Moscone and his successor, Dianne Feinstein, stand nearby as tacit reminders of the Moscone assassination, which took place just a few yards from that spot in the smaller rotunda of the mayor’s office entrance. A bust of former county supervisor Harvey Milk, who was assassinated in the building was unveiled on May 22, 2008. #sanfranciscocityhall #sanfranciscocityhallwedding #rotunda #dome #baroque #mansart #archilovers #archihunter #architecturephotography #blakewellandbrown #arthurbrown #bakewellandbrown #architourism #architecturephotography 📸4pics

Barney, which was brought from France by Stanford White, whose influence can be seen at several rooms at Hearst Castle; 4&5. Billiards Room, originally the breakfast room and now the centerpiece of Casa Grande’s north wing; 6&7. The Refectory, the only dining room in the castle, and was built between 1926 and 1927. The choir stalls which line the walls are from the La Seu d’Urgell Cathedral in Catalonia and the silk flags mounted on the walls are Palio banners from Siena; 8&9. Theater, which seated 50 used for live amateur performances and film screenings; 10. Library is on the second floor, directly above the assembly room. The ceiling is 16th century Spanish, and a remnant is used in the library’s lobby. Hearst Castle, known formally as La Cuesta Encantada (Spanish for “The Enchanted Hill”), is a historic estate in San Simeon, located on the Central Coast of California. Conceived by William Randolph Hearst, the publishing tycoon, and his architect Julia Morgan, the castle was built between 1919 and 1947. Today, Hearst Castle is a museum open to the public as a California State Park and registered as a National Historic Landmark and California Historical Landmark. Hearst first approached Morgan with ideas for a new project in April 1919, shortly after the death of his mother had brought him into his inheritance. His original idea was to build a bungalow, according to Walter Steilberg, one of Morgan’s draftsmen who recalled Hearst’s words from the initial meeting: “I would like to build something up on the hill at San Simeon. I get tired of going up there and camping in tents. I’m getting a little too old for that. I’d like to get something that would be a little more The centrepiece of the estate is the main residence, which became known as Hearst Castle. It was designed in the Mediterranean Revival style, and its facade suggests a Spanish cathedral with its bell towers and ornate decorations. The main entrance is flanked by bas-reliefs of knights, and a sculpture of Mary holding the infant Jesus is perched in a niche over the massive door. The splendor of the exterior continues inside the mansion. Covering 68,500 square feet (6,360 square metres), Hearst Castle contains 115 rooms, including 38 bedrooms, more than 40 bathrooms, a theatre, and a beauty salon. #hearstcastle #juliamorgan #sansimeon #williamrandolphhearst #spanishcolonialrevival #oldhouselove #archilovers #archihunter #archi_ologie #gildedage #mansionsofthegildedage #houseportrait #architecturephotography #icaanortherncalifornia #juliamorganawards #hearstpublishing #architourism #architecturephotography 📸10pics @hearstcastlefanpage

The Ernesto Fabbri residence, 11 East 62nd Street. Fabbri had the good fortune to marry one of the daughters Margaret Vanderbilt Shepard, who gifted the opulent mansion to the happy couple. The Fabbris were in residence for little more than decade before leasing their home out and eventually decamping for a less ostentatious (but just as large) Italian Renaissance townhouse on East 95th Street. The mansion ceased being a private home after being purchased by the Johnson O’Connor Foundation in 1940 for roughly $40,000. 58 years later the Foundation put the mansion on the market for $22.5 million, making it the most expensive townhouse for sale in Manhattan at the time. Purchased by the Japanese government, it was meticulously restored. A happy ending for a handsome house. #nycarchitecture #historicarchitecture #historicmansion #gildedagemansion #beauxarts #househistory #housebeautiful #archilovers #archi_ologie #archidaily #architonic #archilovers #architourism

Petersburg Courthouse is a historic courthouse building located at Petersburg, Virginia. It was designed by New York architect Calvin Pollard and built between 1838 and 1840. It is a two-story, Classical Revival style brick building. It rests on a granite foundation and measures 57 feet wide and 93 feet deep. It features a pedimented hexastyle front portico and a double-tiered bell and clock tower modeled after the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates in Athens. Major work was performed on the structure until 1877 when extensive repairs and interior alterations were carried out. A 30-foot addition was constructed in 1965. During the Siege of Petersburg, Union troops used the tower for a sighting mark and spared the structure from the bombardment. #choragicmonumentoflysicrates #lysicrates #historiccourthouse #greekrevival #classicalrevival #historicarchitecture #historicpreservation #archilovers #archihunter #architourism #historicpetersburg #historicpetersburgva #aerialism #elevatedperspective #archidrone #jmhdroning #architecturephotography #aerialvideogrphy #djimavic3 #architecturephotography 📸🚁 @historicpetersburgfoundation

1070 E. Apache Rd, ca.1957; Alexander Construction Company. Floating Butterfly roofline home designed by William Krisel. Overall view of house and landscaping from the street; The Alexanders’ foray into desert tract homes began with Twin Palms Estates, named for the two palm trees included in the front landscaping of each home. For the Twin Palms houses, Krisel chose a square floor plan, because it was the most economical. Most of the three bedroom units were only 1,200 square feet in size. As with the other designs by Krisel, each house had different embellishments and orientations, making them look custom. This property has a Class 1 historic designation in Palm Springs. The style of the house is a good example of post and beam structure with a double butterfly roof. This is described as a “Floating Butterfly” roofline with an asymmetrical sloping V shape over the living portion of the house. The more common “Extended Butterfly” extends over the carport. The “Floating Butterfly” was not repeated in any other Alexander neighborhood and only 12 were built. The original carport and breezeway entry features are intact. In 2006 Williams Krisel helped the owner design the current landscaping to reflect the spirit of the original. #williamkrisel #alexanderconstructioncompany #butterflyroofline #midmodmondays #modernistarchitecture #oldhouselove #palmsprings #palmspringshistoricalsociety #palmspringspreservationfoundation #languageofmodernism #architourism #architecturephotography 📸10pics @psmodcom @modernism_week @chrismenrad 🔡text: MIT Libraries

The Rennselaerville Library and Reading Room. Organized in 1896 it was the village’s second library (an earlier one was established in 1798). Notable for its half timbered gable decorated with owls (i assume there were originally 4 with one flying the coop at some point), the library more than doubled in size after acquiring the adjacent house in the 1990s. #upstateny #historicalbuildings #library #readingroom #oldbuildings #archidaily #architour #architourism #archilovers

This notable # late 18th century home in Rennselaervillewas originally much smaller. Expanded by Dr Isaac Hyde as his home and hospital, its ionic columns were added during the Greek revival era by a later owner. The small outbuildings behind it were converted into a billiard room/guesthouse in the latter 19th century. #upstateny #househistory #oldhouselove #oldhousecharm #curbappeal #housebeautiful #ionic #househistory #oldhouses #architourism #archilover #archidaily #architour

Telecommunications building in downtown Portland, ME. Can’t find much information on it, though all the traditional elements usually found on phone company structures of the 1920s and 30s are there.
