Well, this should have been your Monday Mansion post, but it just didn’t happen - so here it is today! I think this house is fun to look at because it has so many of the various elements that one finds on a typical Hancock Park home, and Hancock Park is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods of Los Angeles. But you don’t often find ALL of these elements on the same house! It’s almost so absurd that it could be a What the Heck - but not quite 😉. It’s mainly about the landscaping. What a hodgepodge! Between the weirdly randomly sized topiary balls, and the corkscrew tree by the entrance, to the lovely spray of roses over the window, there are so many shaped to see on this single structure… Is it just me or do you find it to be a bit odd and over the top? It’s almost like they had so many ideas that they liked, they just decided to go with them all! And believe me, I’m not complaining… It makes me chuckle and anything that gives me any sort of positive reaction is alright with me! Admittedly, I always love topiary balls. And I have a thing for those corkscrews, too! And who doesn’t love an arbor of roses beautifully draping over a window so perfectly? And let’s not forget that box hedge. And it’s worth noting that everything seems so well kept (though a closer look reveals some serious shagginess!). Personally, I would never put all these details together, but I appreciate that they chose to do so. Built in 1928. Sold for 4.4M in 2016. This Maritz and Young stunner went under contract before I even had a chance to write my post about it... Built in 1927 as a horse farm for Martin Lammert Sr., founder of Lammert’s furniture, 10490 Ladue Road was designed to look like a Cotswold estate Lammert saw on his travels in England. After Lammert’s death, his heirs gifted the house to the St. Louis Archdiocese, where it served as the residence for Cardinals Ritter and Carberry over a nearly three decade run. During this time, the screened-in porch was converted to a chapel for the Cardinals, which was fitted with stained glass from @emilfreistudio that remains to this day. The defining feature of the Second Empire style is the Mansard roof, first used for an addition to the palace at the Louvre in Paris c. 1550. It got its name from 17th century French Baroque architect François Mansart. It became especially fashionable during the Second French Empire (1852–1870) of Napoléon III, which corresponded with the middle Victorian era in the English-speaking world. Urban legend claims the roof was designed to avoid taxes on an additional story. Not true, the King of France didn't pay taxes. Typically called a French roof in the U.S. during the 19th century, it was popular during a period when all things French were "en vogue" for fashionable middle- and upper-class Americans. Second Empire buildings are essentially Italianate in style from the eave line down, but their roof gives them a different identity.
