🌍 Last weekend we celebrated Earth Day with free art-making and nature workshops at Socrates! Our 2024 Artist Fellow Landon Newton (@theabortionherbgarden) led a Cyanotype workshop after a weeds walk tour, the Connected Chef (@connectedchef) presented a cooking demo using all of the parts of a beetroot and ending with a communal painting. In the grove, Materials for the Arts’ (@materialsforthearts) CD Grass Growing project to Socrates produced some stellar, slim mini greenhouses. Quinn Chen (@happyjawbone) taught visitors how to mend & repair fabric, Entangled Herbs (@entangled.herbs) shared their plant & herb knowledge, and Queens Perennial CSA (@queensperennial) had plenty of 🌷 for new CSA Members. This Spring, we are exhibiting a series of watercolors from our collections: "Weeds in the Garden." During her summer internship in 2014, artist Cindy De La Cruz painted this series after finding inspiration in our Victorian garden. Rendered lovingly in this painting is a plantain weed! Plantain weeds have edible seeds and leaves, and are known for their health benefits from its high concentration of vitamins C, A, and K. The Museum's gardener may not have welcomed these common garden weeds, but Cindy captured their natural beauty nonetheless! These watercolor images also illustrate a pamphlet produced by the Museum with instructions on how to best remove each plant when they grow where not wanted.
