Ordinary citizens serving their country Maksym Chumak was born on 28 April 1984. In his early years, he decided to pursue a sports career in wrestling, particularly in judo and sambo, achieving the distinction of a master of sports. In 2006, he completed his education at the National Academy of the State Tax Service of Ukraine, earning a comprehensive university degree in Accounting and Auditing. In addition, he successfully concluded the Military Training Department program at the Academy, attaining the rank of junior lieutenant. On the 26 February 2022, he volunteered to join the 27th Pechersk Brigade within the Northern Operational Detachment of the National Guard of Ukraine. From the initial days of the full-scale war, he actively participated in combat missions within Kyiv Oblast. On 3 January 2023, Maksym sustained facial injuries and a concussion but declined evacuation. In his own words, he couldn’t leave his comrades without a leader. On the same day, accompanied by another soldier, Lieutenant Chumak embarked on a mission to a logistics point situated 1.5-2 kilometres south of the contact line in the vicinity of Serebrianske forestry. Their objective was to collect and transport equipment and other essentials to replace those destroyed in the previous day’s positions. On the return journey, the pickup truck carrying Lieutenant Maksym Chumak and his comrade was struck by enemy mortar fire, resulting in the loss of both defenders. Вічна Пам’ять! Eternal Memory! While snipers are typically infantry soldiers, they must possess exceptional abilities beyond regular troops. A sniper requires tremendous control over fear and excitement. Even the slightest irregularity in heartbeat or tremor of the hands can cause the barrel of a long-range rifle to deviate minutely. At extreme distances to targets, such minuscule movement often results in a missed shot. Worse, it could expose the sniper’s hidden position, leaving mere seconds to relocate before drawing hostile return fire. Ukrainian snipers exhibit remarkable poise and accuracy while safeguarding compatriots from Russian atrocities and fighting for their country’s survival and right to live under the rule of law. Тисячі нині обов’язкових дзвінків втратять свою потребу, адже все, що відбуватиметься у наших життях, ми зможемо обговорити, разом сидячи ввечері на кухні за черговою чашкою чаю. Ми зможемо бути разом, коли завершимо свою справу, а поки: «Не переживайте, ми поїли і в шапці». Fatigue and pain after a frontal assault with the Chimera unit of the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine Withdrawing from an assault is a distinct operation, as the enemy’s artillery continues pounding relentlessly, even after their infantry has been defeated. Evacuation teams and equipment are repeatedly targeted by the enemy. After successfully completing assigned tasks, no one relaxes. A tense process of withdrawing from the assault and evacuating wounded soldiers commences towards nightfall. Those able to walk leave their positions independently, awaiting the evacuation vehicle at the transshipment point. A couple of hours later, the rumble of an engine signals success, and armoured doors open as medics begin providing first aid. These are the faces and hands of those who have emerged from hell. Real care and support emanate from their comrades. A soldier with broken legs requests water, and his comrade bends down to let him drink, quenching a thirst well understood. The assault is incredibly physically exhausting, with two days spent on adrenaline, running with obstacles in full ammunition and with heavy weapons. Only a limited amount of water could be carried, and the soldiers started running out the next morning. The look on his face, as he takes that first sip, can only be compared to the way he smokes his first cigarette, also given by a fellow soldier. Every day, Ukrainian Defenders make superhuman efforts to ensure life itself. Remembering their daily heroism and supporting them is the least that can be done to repay them. У мить, коли лунає команда «Гармата», а після неї – вигук «Постріл», усі інші звуки навколо зникають. Коли вибух розсікає повітря, час ніби вповільнюється, а дихання кожного, хто це чує, на хвильку завмирає. Найбільш цікаво дивитись за пострілом крізь об’єктив камери, адже кожен «клац» її затвору розділяє цю частку секунди на безліч кадрів, які дозволяють роздивитись усе. Кожен рух механізмів гармати, мить, коли дим від пострілу спочатку накриває своєю тінню всю вогневу, а потім – стелиться по землі, змішуючись із піднятими хмарами пилу. Такі хвилини як надихають своєю красою, так і дають шанс усвідомити – я там, де маю бути, я на своєму правильному місці. Reflecting on her early days, Hanna notes, “When I joined the Territorial Defense Forces, there were only a few women in the battalion. They likened us to Hollywood heroine Soldier Jane. At 18, Ruslana Danilkina volunteered for the Armed Forces of Ukraine after the full-scale Russian invasion began. She serves as an example of Ukrainian youth’s bravery. Ruslana, known as “Rusya,” was assigned as a communications operator, tasked with receiving information about incoming enemy shells, troop and equipment movements, suspicious sounds or explosions, and relaying it to the command. Her duties required day and night work, almost around the clock. Despite the constant stress, Ruslana performed her job effectively until 10 February 2023, when her military vehicle came under mortar fire during a combat mission. “I thought my life was over. Combat medics who, by coincidence, were driving behind us applied a tourniquet on me. They saved my life! After I was transferred to the medical vehicle, my leg was placed near me. At an empty checkpoint in the war zone, the commander of an aerial reconnaissance platoon for the 130th Separate Airborne Battalion in Kyiv stands duty. His call sign is “Hora”, after his native village. Hora explains that part of his unit is on combat operations while the other part is training. “The war doesn’t stand still. Our particular task is to develop drones. And our task is to be the first, to be better than the enemy.” Before joining the military, Hora worked in logistics for an international trucking company across Europe. He is a platoon commander now, but he plans to return to civilian life after victory. Hora’s platoon conducts aerial reconnaissance and surveillance missions, though he remains tight-lipped on specifics. “Everything else is a detail that we don’t talk about. Well, you understand,” he says with a smile. He expresses confidence in their technological development efforts. “We’re developing important areas related to technology. There will definitely be a result. Earlier, this wasn’t so important. Now the enemy is closer, so we’re reformatting from the east. We’re learning and developing – that’s the key to life and victory.” The commander credits his unit’s lack of casualties to their integrated approach. “I’m fighting and learning together with my unit. No fatalities or serious injuries so far. I aim to finish this way - without fatalities, at mostly light injuries.” Preserving his soldiers’ lives is paramount to Hora. “A commander’s main responsibility is preserving personnel. Serhiy Konoval, Ukrainian defender, volunteer, public activist, member of Plast Scouting Order of Crusaders, and participant in the Revolution of Dignity, was killed 6 August 2024 near Chasiv Yar, Donetsk Oblast. His call sign was “Nord.” Konoval served as the commander of the 2nd company of the 2nd Taras “Hummer” Bobanych Infantry Battalion of the 67th Separate Mechanized Brigade. In 2014, he began working as a paramedic in Shchastia, Stanytsia Luhanska, and Pisky as part of the Hospitallers Medical Volunteer Battalion. After the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, Konoval returned to the frontlines as a volunteer. He participated in battles in the Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Donetsk regions. Together with his company, he defended the city of Bakhmut. For his service, Konoval was awarded the Order for Courage by the President of Ukraine. Just a few months ago, he married Olha Danchenko, a fellow volunteer. In Ternopil, Konoval was one of the founders of the Veteran’s House and an organizer of military-patriotic training for young people, passing on his experience and knowledge to the next generation. Serhiy Konoval’s dedication to Ukraine’s defense and his commitment to serving his country as a volunteer and professional soldier have been recognized and honoured. Від пострілів і вогню лущиться та згорає фарба, а від надмірного навантаження відмовляються працювати деякі механізми або ж гармата починає натякати на тотальний ремонт. Приблизно те саме відбувається з нами також. Ми втомлюємось, змінюємось ззовні, дехто з нас навіть встиг вирости та подорослішати за цей час, проте лишається основа – металевий каркас, який тримає поверхневу оболонку. Slava Kulakovskyi will be running the London Marathon on behalf of British-Ukrainian Aid on 21 April to raise funds for a cause that is very dear to his heart - rehabilitation of wounded Ukrainian Defenders. Slava is a professional athlete with an upper extremity amputation, coach & rehabilitation specialist. He rehabilitates servicemen who have lost limbs, and helps them to return to active and healthy life after injury. Slava lost his arm just below the shoulder in an industrial pressing machine on 24 February 2014, at age 27. Meet Max, a 25-year-old Ukrainian soldier who bears the scars of war, having lost both his legs and his left arm in the war with the Russians. But Max is not defined by his injuries; he’s a participant in the Litay (Fly) project, where he’s mastering the art of drone piloting. Yes, you read that correctly – Max defies the odds and commands a drone with a single hand. In the days before the war, he was a journalist, and now, he dreams of going back to his journalism career, but this time as a drone operator, capturing video footage from the skies. The Fly project currently has 30 veterans who have suffered severe injuries and traumas inflicted by Russian aggression. These brave individuals are undergoing rehabilitation and gaining practical expertise in navigating FPV drones. До тих, кому важко зараз, проте легкість настане у мить, коли кожному доведеться відповідати перед своєю совістю за свою бездіяльність або навпаки – жагу до дії.
