I love doing art in the dark and not knowing what colors I have chosen until the lights come on (oil pastels). Music seems to stay in the air longer in the dark and my body moves through the air slower in the dark. (Make a plan so you stay safe with movement and dance!) Art helps. Being crippled isn’t fun. I’m doing my best. ‘I am not my anger, my anger is not me. My anger is valid-but I am not my anger, my anger is not me’ A simple and yet over time-effective phrase that has helped me attempt to handle my justified anger. This past 4 years has been unforgivable. I certainly have a lot of justified reasons to be angry with anyone who involved themselves in the web trap 💩 that just occurred. It wasn’t the hand of God- It wasn’t karma🪬 It was people INTENTIONALLY being harmful in my life and forgetting to be human beings. They wouldn’t have wanted to be treated how I was- Ever And they certainly wouldn’t want their family or loved ones treated that way either. 🌶️🪬🪬 When I first began saying this phrase- ‘I am not my anger-my anger is not me’ I would say it angry or sarcastic- over time it has helped. Really. Symptoms - Symptoms of chronic migraines that people do not see or understand because I do not show my discomfort/pain because of my ADHD/ASD. My migraines cause pain on one side of my head, usually the left side. I get a sharp stabing pain behind my eye, like someone is poking it with a needle. The pain travels into my temple around my ear and down my neck. Sometimes, the pain is so bad that I want to detach my head from my body or blow my head off. Other symptoms include brain fog, lethargic, nausea, and limb weakness. After 15 plus years of living with daily headaches and migraines, did I find a GP that put me on medication that works for me. I still get the occasional headache, but it's manageable. Putting life into perspective through Art. I feel like it takes me forever to complete my projects anymore. Last year I could finish a piece in 2 days, but now it takes me a couple weeks. . Then I had to think to myself, last year my paintings were simple in detail (compared to now) and only 7x9 inches. Now, well I want my art to reflect more of how I envision things in my mind. Intense colors and extremely whimsical. I don’t know why it’s like that in there, but it’s fantastical to imagine life more so in color. Plus, they are almost as big as me. They are much larger. So… if I want to make a big difference, I need to take my time. . The same goes for growth in my life. I use to live for small instant moments of gratification. But as I get older, I know that each moment needs to stand for something. I need to work on things/moments that are lasting. I need to make sure the work that I do with ME is meaningful to help keep my mind, heart and body on in shape/health to go the distance. I’m short, but I’m not a small project. I have an IDEA FOLDER for my visual art that is filled with notes and pics. For my writing I actually create a new file with each new idea I get so that I can just scan through the titles when I am looking for something to write about. It is so helpful to have ideas I can go to when I am feeling blank or stuck. You could keep a physical notebook, or a note on your phone. They have simple projects on hand to help participants create quickly, and a mixed-media artist is there to offer guidance. Share an encouragement story from your life! I am living the encouragement right now! When you leave a comment I think, “YES! I can keep going, there is someone out there!” Yesterday my sweetie read me the days entry and told me what was helpful to him, that was a shot in the courage department. “Yes, I am ready to send my book to Anne Lamott!” was my reaction. Fingers crossed that the courage stays with me! It is important to know that encouragement is a two-way street. We receive it and we give it. When we need encouragement, it is good to tell people what is helpful, we are all different and often people don’t know what we need. And it is helpful when we give encouragement that it is authentic and specific. “I love it!” is great and “I love it, it really touched my heart and helped me see things differently.” Or, “The colors just jump off the page and excited me.” Or, “Your voice lulled me into another dimension, my body relaxed and the chatter in my brain stopped for a moment.” Or… Does that make sense? I just noticed that my examples included a body sensation. Hmm, that is a level that I hadn’t thought about. Giving this kind of encouragement helps us check into our body and be more present in our body. When I wrote these words, I was thinking about our call to be creatives, to sing and dance and play music and write and create things with our hands and bodies. And I knew as I was writing “Artist is a Verb” that it was not just about the arts, it was about life. Most of my messages are about art but can easily be applied to our life, all of life. We say yes to a job, we say yes to love, we say yes to moving, we say yes to an opportunity, we say yes to life. And then we have to show up. The etymology of the word courage is “with heart.” So, here I am in the promotion of this book that I bravely said yes to. I showed up day after day with heart (It was my daily Creative Practice for over 4 years.) and launched it with heart and now I show up day after day to promote it with heart. I thank myself for the messages in the book because I need to hear them! I could not have planned this serendipity! So, if I were going to write a review for my book, I would thank myself for giving me exactly what I need! Life is full of surprises! Thank you for listening! P.S.
