The NGO has successfully translocated a number of endemic bird species to the island to help breeding numbers and continue to protect turtles nesting on the island alongside continuing conservation of the island forest. 📍Six Senses Laamu, Maldives As the home of the Maldives Underwater Initiative, Six Senses Laamu has won awards for their conservation efforts, including educating Maldivian students on the importance of marine conservation and protecting over 10 million sq ft of sea grass. MEANDERING • One of the greatest thrills of visiting the Serengeti was our encounter with this Aardwolf. We were so privileged to meet the last two Northern White Rhinos in the world - Najin and Fatu (and also their friend and mentor Tauwo, a Southern White Rhino who has helped reintroduce them to the wild). They are kept safe in a 700-acre enclosure with 24 hour armed security guard of K9 rangers. Sudan, the last male, passed away of natural causes in 2018. His keepers were heartbroken but there remains hope that he may still have children. In an extraordinary ‘de-extinction’ IVF programme, 29 embryos containing his DNA will hopefully be implanted in surrogate female Southern White Rhinos over coming years. Najin is a gentle giantess but Fatu her daughter can be rather bossy and grumpy - and Tauwo is still very much a wild rhino - so their carer and keeper Jacob supervised as we fed them their favourite carrots from the vehicle. We also met Baraka the Black Rhino. Smaller than White Rhinos and with a pointier mouth, Black Rhinos are solitary animals and he is very happy in his own 100-acre enclosure. He was born in the wild but lost sight in both eyes due to a fight and then a cataract. Black Rhinos are usually territorial and aggressive but Baraka is incredibly friendly and gentle and takes his role as Rhino Ambassador very seriously.
