Cheetah mating game (part 1) These are photos from an encounter between a coalition of 3 male cheetahs and an adult female with subadult cubs (around 17 months at the time). The female is not willing to mate with the males, but they were persistent and kept her ‘hostage’ for the entire day. Cheetahs are one of the only wild cat species that don’t actively commit infanticide. Female cheetahs are not territorial and only a part of the male population actively defends territories. Meetings between males and females can be sporadic and when males have a possible mating opportunity their hormones seem to go in overdrive. I have seen coalition partners wound or try to mount each other in the excitement once confronted with an adult female. If the female is not in oestrus and reluctant to mate, it can be a stressful encounter for her during which she is constantly approached by the excited males. Mursi Tribe women with her lip plates Lower Omo Valley Ethiopia 🇪🇹 Visiting the Omo valley can feel like a journey through time, arriving at something as close as there is to an untouched Africa free from outside influences. There are thousands of Omo pastoralists, cultivators, and hunters who still live almost exactly as their ancestors did hundreds of years ago. Possessing few items from the modern world, the men, women, and children here ritually adorn themselves to express status and tribal identity. However, the use of large lip plates is the most visible distinguishing feature of the Omo tribes.The Mursi tribes, along with the neighbouring Suri tribes, are believed to be the last groups in Africa where women still wear large pottery or wooden discs. In this society, as girls reach puberty, they will have their lips cut and a small wooden plug inserted. Sasseka relaxing in a marula tree, her tail casually draped down a branch, swaying gently in the breeze, as if the leopard is enjoying a leisurely afternoon siesta, with no cares in the world. Are you jealous? Well I was looking how she was relaxing there😝 Amazing! 🐆 Incredible that she had no care in the world, while there were multiple hyenas on the lookout just below her. She is obviously very well aware of the fact that these hyenas are not able to reach her, which gives her enough comfort to close her eyes. Special to be able to spend time with her, while being so chilled with our presence.

Found throughout the entire continent of #Africa, on Asia including India, #Australia and even some Pacific Islands, the African #Monarch #Butterfly is a beautiful yet common insect. They have few predators due to their emetic properties; they build up cardenolides, which are toxic compounds found in the Milkweed they love to consume. #Butterflies feed through a long, curled tongue called a proboscis. They can only eat liquid in the form of nectar. They are often seen on the edges of puddles, where they seek the minerals in water. If you can get close enough, you can tell a male Monarch from a female. The male has a large scent gland on his hindwing that looks like a raised large black dot with a white center. Can you tell whether this is a male or female? You might need to click on the photo for a full-size version. African Monarchs don't #migrate like American Monarchs, which travel up to 3000 miles from Canada and the US to Mexico. Other Monarchs around the world either don't migrate, or migrate only short distances. The North American migration is one of the most incredible spectacles in the world. We were very lucky with multiple cheetah sightings at Rra Dinare…We found 4 brothers resting in the mopane on the way to camp from the airstrip, and were unbelievably spoiled by finding another 6 cheetah less than 10 minutes later! The mighty leopard 🐆 Amazing how well camouflaged these animals are - we looked for ages but eventually found this beauty chilling in a tree. The photos make it seem far more serene that it really was. I was in a safari vehicle and around me were about 85 other jeeps all vying for a spot to see the leopard. When I first visited Africa, I was intrigued by the ability of women to carry things on their heads. HOW DO THEY DO THAT???? I failed miserably at improving my posture by walking with books balanced on my head as a young girl (Shoulders back! Chin up! Stand up straight!). I have neck and back injuries that preclude me from trying again, but that didn't stop my curiosity. This beautiful woman thought my questions were very funny, especially when I demonstrated my unique ability to lose a notebook in less than one step. I haven't posted for a while due to various reasons (work, flu and life in general). It's given me some time to reflect on how fortunate I am to have access to one of the most amazing places on earth. Everyday in nature is a great day whether I get the sightings I want or not. I am the best version of myself when I am there. And then there are moments like these that I get to share with my loved ones, in natures embrace, when we just get to take it all in. I'll remember this sighting for many reasons, not least the adventure we had getting to and from the location. We got to help a stranded family get back on the road after a breakdown near the location, where we had seen a leopard, multiple hyenas and even a puff adder. No one ( @KrugerGoneWild @philventer6 ) hesitated to assist, in spite of the possible danger. Everyone was happy to help and took joy in a moment of adventure. I noticed throughout our trip just how much pride my fellow South Africans took in helping others, especially visitors, in finding their way around the park and maximizing their experience. People were happy and kind in every possible way. We watched #Chasingthesun2 afterwards, and we smiled knowingly when @siyakolisi and @bokrugby said we can do anything when we all pull in the same direction. Too true Captain! We don't have to do it on grand stages either, just be the best version of yourself in your given environment. The young leopard was awesome too. Next stop in Zimbabwe’s Eastern Highlands was the well-known birding hotspot at Seldomseen Holiday Cottages in the Vumba Forest. Their list of local specials and endemics is mouth watering and an arm’s-length long.
