Cheetah mating game (part 1) These are photos from an encounter between a coalition of 3 male cheetahs and an adult female with subadult cubs (around 17 months at the time). The female is not willing to mate with the males, but they were persistent and kept her ‘hostage’ for the entire day. Cheetahs are one of the only wild cat species that don’t actively commit infanticide. Female cheetahs are not territorial and only a part of the male population actively defends territories. Meetings between males and females can be sporadic and when males have a possible mating opportunity their hormones seem to go in overdrive. I have seen coalition partners wound or try to mount each other in the excitement once confronted with an adult female. If the female is not in oestrus and reluctant to mate, it can be a stressful encounter for her during which she is constantly approached by the excited males. Found throughout the entire continent of #Africa, on Asia including India, #Australia and even some Pacific Islands, the African #Monarch #Butterfly is a beautiful yet common insect. They have few predators due to their emetic properties; they build up cardenolides, which are toxic compounds found in the Milkweed they love to consume. #Butterflies feed through a long, curled tongue called a proboscis. They can only eat liquid in the form of nectar. They are often seen on the edges of puddles, where they seek the minerals in water. If you can get close enough, you can tell a male Monarch from a female. The male has a large scent gland on his hindwing that looks like a raised large black dot with a white center. Can you tell whether this is a male or female? You might need to click on the photo for a full-size version. African Monarchs don't #migrate like American Monarchs, which travel up to 3000 miles from Canada and the US to Mexico. Other Monarchs around the world either don't migrate, or migrate only short distances. The North American migration is one of the most incredible spectacles in the world. When I first visited Africa, I was intrigued by the ability of women to carry things on their heads. HOW DO THEY DO THAT???? I failed miserably at improving my posture by walking with books balanced on my head as a young girl (Shoulders back! Chin up! Stand up straight!). I have neck and back injuries that preclude me from trying again, but that didn't stop my curiosity. This beautiful woman thought my questions were very funny, especially when I demonstrated my unique ability to lose a notebook in less than one step.
