Revell 1/72 Supermarine Spitfire Mk. Vb En 951 Rf. D No.303 Sqn. September 1942 S/Ldr Jan Zumbach Kit No. 03897 The Supermarine Spitfire is one of the symbols of the Battle of Britain. Because it is so iconic, many Spitfires survived the war and still fly around the globe. The Mk. Vb was an upgraded version of the Spitfire, sporting two autocannons in its wings as well as four machine guns. This kit holds a rather significant position in my collection as it is one of the first aircraft I have ever airbrushed, as well as the first warbird I have ever built. Since this is an early build in my journey, it does not come with any bells or whistles and follows a rather simple approach. The kit was airbrushed using an H&S Ultra. No pre- or post-shading was added. Weathering was added using Tamiya weathering effects. Regarding the kit, it is one of the better ones Revell offers. The details are nice and crisp, the fit is almost flawless, and the decals are of great quality. One thing that needs to be mentioned is that the top of the box states that the kit comes with auxiliary tanks, which is not true. Meet The First Female Thunderbird Pilot: Nicole ‘Fifi’ Malachowski @realmalachowski In 2005, the U.S. Air Force Air Demonstration Squadron, the ‘Thunderbirds,’ unveiled their lineup for the following year’s demonstration season, which includes Lt. Nicole ‘Fifi’ Malachowski, set to be the first female demonstration pilot in the 52-year history of the Thunderbirds. She was selected to fly as Thunderbird #3 with the USAF Air Demonstration team and is also the first woman to fly on any Department of Defense military jet demonstration team. For two years, she consistently surprises the audience, not just in the air but also on land - every time she steps out of the cockpit of the fighter jets as a woman, and the first woman to have been accepted for a seat on the Air Force’s premier show team. Malachowski served as a mission-ready fighter pilot in three operational F-15E fighter squadrons, accumulating over 188 combat hours in both OPERATION DELIBERATE FORCE and OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM. During her combat service, she held various roles including F-15E Flight Commander, Evaluator, Instructor Pilot, and Flight Lead, amassing 2,300 flight hours as a command pilot across six different Air Force aircraft: T-3, T-37, T-38, AT-38, F-15E, and the F-16C/D. Although her life took an unexpected turn at the peak of her promising career in 2012, as her illness ‘Tick Borne’ worsened, leading to symptoms such as disorientation, confusion, anxiety, and temporary paralysis. Despite that, she turned this extraordinary life challenge into an opportunity to advocate for other patients with the same illness at the national level, which then became her new mission in life. Whatever Nicole is doing now, her life will always remind us of a “thunderbird” symbolizing strength, leadership, and victory.
