Hertzel Nohomovski was born in Novogrudok, Poland on April 28, 1920 but lived most of his life in the nearby town of Ivie. When the Germans occupied Ivie, they divided the town into two groups, sending Hertzel to the local ghetto. The other group, including the rest of his family, was transported directly to an area outside of town and immediately killed. While in the ghetto Hertzel joined the underground, then escaped to the forests and joined the partisans – the Bielski Brigade. They fought bravely against the Germans and sought revenge on the local collaborators. In the forest he met Tova (Gutke) Gantzeviz and they married in 1944. Together with Tova, he emigrated to Israel in 1946 after a year of wandering around Europe and escaping from the Russians. Good evening to you all, a fantastic walk down Patsos Gorge by the lake and back to the village ( 7 miles )today, back in 1941 when Crete was invaded British and Commonwealth soldiers hid out in the villages and monasteries at risk to the lives of the Cretan people, some hid in the caves of the Patsos Gorge. The local villagers would bring them food and drink, at risk of being caught of being executed. Some of the troops would escape to the coast as each night a submarine would go off the coast and not only take off the escapees but also drop off members of Force 133 of the SOE, radio operators and commandos who would raid airfields and fuel dumps. Tomorrow we will look at George Horokopos, teacher from the village of Patsos, turned Cretan Resistance. “Conspiracy” (HBO, @hbo) is a reconstruction of the Wannsee Conference where the nazis adopted the “final solution” (“Endlösung der Jüdenfrage”), based on the transcript found in an archive after the war. Fifteen men of all components of the German regime took one large hour - time for food and beverages included - to agree on the details of the holocaust which took 6 million lives. There were some practical and legal but no moral objections during the first hour. SS general Heydrich (Kenneth Branagh) and his deputy Eichmann (Stanley Tucci) then interrupted the meeting for drinks and food and wrapped the whole thing up - method (gas), location (the known concentration camps), deportation by trains etc. - in a few minutes. The title cards tell you what happened to these 15 men after the war. No more than a few were punished; most of them walked away scot free. All of them should have been executed. One of them became a bookkeeper who died of old age in the eighties. (I’d like to see his resume: proficient participant in meetings?) Enjoying this fine piece of history today. Early shell with the shorter straps, original net, 1st Infantry Division Insignia, and NCO Bar. The shell has been repainted at least once, true to the Normandy campaign. Thick brush marks can be seen under the net. T4 or T5 rank was once painted on the right side, only to be covered by the repaint. The only identifying marking is “Nick” scratched into the NCO Bar. Veteran units like the 1st were known to have repainted their helmets prior to Normandy. A lot of 1st ID M1s recovered in Normandy or Veterans of, are found with an obvious repaint. Soap residue is thick on the inside. Original net and straps show heavy use. A time capsul and true Normandy vet! I’ve wanted a helmet like this since I started studying WW2. The matching liner is owned by another collector and sadly neither of us will budge but hopefully one day the set will be get back together. If only this one could talk.

The German port of Bremen was one of the last big cities to be taken by the British Army in the European campaign, being captured in the last week of April 1945. The city was captured in a two-fold attack by the British 3rd Division , 52nd Division and 43rd Division. These infantry divisions were supported by tanks and specialized armored vehicles. Before the capture of Bremen, 767 aircraft of RAF Bomber Command No. 1, 3, 4, 6 and 8 Group carried out a tactical bombardment. The bombs were mainly destined for the southeastern suburbs, through which British troops would launch their attack on the city. Most of the fighting took place on the outskirts of Bremen, after the British soldiers forced their way into the city, the German resistance collapsed. On April 27, 1945, the command post of Generalleutnant Fritz Becker, Kampfkommandant of Bremen, surrendered to the 4th Wiltshires. After the fighting, large parts of the port city lay in ruins. An area two by four miles in the middle of the city had turned into a desolate wasteland of ruins. Between 22 and 27 April, 540 civilians were killed in the fighting. This then and now photo shows Crocodile flamethrower tanks of the A-Squadron, 7th Royal Tank Regiment (added to support the 3rd Division) on Buntentorsteinweg in Bremen. [ Normandy American Cemetery ] 🕊️🇺🇸 📌: Colleville-sur-Mer 📜: Le 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐲 𝐀𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐂𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐲 est situé sur une falaise qui surplombe 𝐎𝐦𝐚𝐡𝐚 𝐁𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 et la Manche. Dans ce cimetière reposent 𝟗𝟑𝟖𝟏 𝐀𝐦é𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬 décédés, pour la plupart lors du 𝐝é𝐛𝐚𝐫𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐝𝐞 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐞 et la 𝐁𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐬 𝐇𝐚𝐢𝐞𝐬. Sur les murs du jardin mémorial sont inscrits les noms de 𝟏𝟓𝟓𝟕 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐬 portés disparus, ou qui ont été inhumés en mer. Ce mémorial est composé d’une colonnade semi-circulaire, avec un loggia de chaque côté où se trouve de grandes cartes et des récits des opérations militaires. Une table d’orientation est installée de façon à surplomber la plage, et celle-ci y décrit le débarquement. Today marks an important day as we remember “Exercise Tiger” which was the Allies’ covert rehearsal for the D-Day landings in Normandy, with Slapton being selected for its similarities to Utah beach. The exercise ended in tragedy due to attack by German S Boats, with hundreds of predominately US Servicemen’s lives lost in the night of 27-28 April 1944. Some 80 years later, a new plaque on a cairn has been unveiled by Strete Gate Car Park at the end of Slapton Sands. Don’t ask me what took me so long, I know, I was clearly missing out. I always love reading a WWII novel, I am so fascinated by that time period and love learning about that time. I haven’t read much historical fiction this year so picking this thickkkk boy up was intimidating, but I must say I absolutely loved it. • Now onto the book. This story was absolutely haunting. I had learned previously about Frances’ involvement in the war and I really enjoyed this different take on the war. I got some serious “Sarah’s Key” and “Lost Girls of Paris” vibes. Which if you haven’t read either of those two books, but loved The Nightingale - you neeeed to pick them up. • I feel like I am the last one to pick up this book, so I am going to keep this review short and sweet. The characters are amazing, so well developed. The setting is completely on point. There are twists, yes twists, within this story that will have you shocked. This is one of those stories that once you read it, it will stick with you for a long time. I loved every single second of this book. Le Petit Musée => Bastogne trip : Dernier lieu pour cette journée mémoire, lieu faisant partie du package du Bastogne War Museum. Le Bastogne War Room. Ce site qui se trouve dans l'enceinte du bastogne barracks, remet en scène l'histoire de la proposition de reddition aux américains et l'origine du fameux NUTS! Également un super site bien mis en scène, encore un lieu à aller voir. Un peu d'histoire : 22 décembre 1944, le général américain McAuliffe refuse de se rendre aux Allemands qui assiègent Bastogne Dans un premier temps, le général McAuliffe croit que les Allemands annoncent qu’ils se rendent. Mais les officiers lui répondent qu’il se trompe : "Ce sont eux qui veulent que nous nous rendions". Il s’exclame alors : "Oh nuts !", ce qui en argot américain pourrait être traduit par "Ils doivent être fous". Les officiers se concertent alors sur quelle réponse il faut apporter à cet ultimatum. Il est décidé de répondre aux Allemands par écrit. "Et qu’est-ce que je devrais écrire ?", demande McAuliffe. "Un jeune homme impétueux dit à Mc Aulife qu’il n’y a pas de meilleure réponse que la réaction que vous avez eue lorsque nous vous avons fait part de la teneur de l’ultimatum", se souvient Harry Kinnard. "Qu’est-ce que vous voulez dire ?", dit Mc Auliffe. "Vous avez dit 'nuts !'." Et tous les officiers présents approuvent. A Churchill AVRE on display in the Bovington Tank Museum. An offshoot of the Churchill tank line of the British army. It took the basic chassis and hull and made it an engineering platform to help in obstacle and fortified position clearing. The main gun was replaced with a large calibre demolition spigot mortar, its ammunition often was referred to as the "flying dustbin".
