🌟 Honoring "The Flying Greek," Steve Pisanos! 🌟 Born in Athens, Greece, Steve Pisanos' adventurous spirit led him to America in 1938, setting the stage for an extraordinary military career that spanned continents and conflicts. 🌍✈️ 🛩️ Joining the RAF in 1941 as part of the Eagle Squadron, Steve flew Spitfires before transferring to the U.S. Army Air Forces in 1942. Remarkably, while serving overseas in 1943, he became the first immigrant to be naturalized as a U.S. citizen outside the continental U.S. 🇺🇸 🎖️ Steve's heroics continued through WWII, achieving his 10th aerial victory in 1944. After his plane went down behind enemy lines, he evaded capture for six months, aiding the French Resistance. Keller Army Community Hospital recognizes Greek-American Heritage Month by highlighting the contributions of ‘Americans of Greek descent’ during the month of March. Today we recognize Col. Steve Pisanos. Pisanos, was one of six children born into a low-income Athens, Greece family in 1919. He left high school, and in 1938 was employed as a navy merchant seaman, but at first chance he fled his ship to the docks of Baltimore and then to New York City where he started working as a clandestine immigrant. He earned his private pilot’s license in 1939. After the war broke out and Greece was attacked in 1940, he tried to join the U.S. Army Air Forces, but he was denied due to U.S. neutrality. However, the Royal Air Force was informally recruiting aviators in English-speaking countries; Britain, being an ally of Greece, accepted him. Pisanos' lack of American citizenship prevented him from joining a purely American combat unit (one commanded by American officers). Pisanos' comrades decided the solution was to convince the United States government to grant him citizenship under the name of 'Steve Pisanos', which it did on May 3, 1942, making him the first American citizen naturalized while on foreign soil. Known as ‘The Flying Greek”, he continued his service in the US Air Force during the Vietnam War and retired from the military in 1974, after having earned a total of thirty-three decorations and distinctions. In 2008, Pisanos was inducted into the International Air & Space Hall of Fame at the San Diego Air & Space Museum; and in 2010, he was awarded the French Legion of Honor, the French Republic's highest decoration, in a ceremony at the San Diego Air & Space Museum. The perfect 📸 @matgilfedder got of me after a Keirin race and not able to to unclip leaning on the glass fence at the recent round 2 day 2 of the Track series over the weekend. . Cheers to Mat for helping me off my bike, you’re a legend! . Go back a year and if you knew I was suffering a bit of health issues with bad fatigue not able to race so had to take a few steps back and rest the body so it can repair itself. . Recently painted this tribute to Manoli "The Flying Greek" Savvenas for @fightcrc in Springfield MO. Many people in Springfield knew Manoli as a pillar of the city and a talented jeweler, but he was also an iconic pro wrester. As a smaller wrestler, he pioneered in the acrobatics we see in wrestling today. Manoli wrestled with and against some giant legends such as Andre the Giant.
