The date this supposed action is not provided and I have been unable to find any sources corroborating it. If true, the loss of these two aircraft would account for half of the Turkey's air power assigned to this front! . "In the commencement of Allied landings in Gallipoli, the command of Çanakkale Fortified Zone possessed an air squadron consisting of four planes (three Albatros B1 and one Rumpler B1). This squadron played a pivotal role in reconnaissance, patrol, and support duties. Aerial reconnaissance assumed significance on 18 March 1915, during the Allied fleet's unsuccessful attempt to breach the Dardanelles. Subsequently, the initial aircraft squadron, augmented with Turkish and German observers and a few additional aircraft, continued reconnaissance and bombarding operations against British and French forces on the offshore islands. The deployment of bombs by manual release and the ineffectiveness of aircraft armament were notable challenges. Here's a fun read of a dawn-patrol dogfight over Vaudemanges between a Morane-Salnier and an Albatros that was won with a carbine and ending with both airplanes crashing but all combatants surviving with a handshake. This incident marks the first victory of future ace 'Pivolo' Georges Pelletier d'Oisy. Postwar, "On 24 April 1924, Pelletier d'Oisy and Adjutant Lucien Besin departed Paris eastbound in a Breguet 19.A.2 in an attempt to fly around the world. Their attempt ended when they crashed their airplane on a golf course in Shanghai, China on 20 May 1924.[4] They had covered 10,580 miles (17,037 km) in 26 days" (via wikipedia). 24th April 1944. Ex-cabinet maker from Laston, Oklahoma, Captain Robert (Bob) S. Johnhson, 24 year old fighter pilot is the leading killer of enemy fighter planes in the US Air Forces in Europe. He has a score of 25 victims, most of them of the FW 190s and ME 109 type. He has flown nearly 80 missions soring five “doubles and a trebel”. Whilst many say Malcolm McDowell’s best performance was A Clockwork Orange, for me it was always his portrayal of Major Gresham in Aces High. Based on RC Sherriff’s famous WWI play “Journey’s End”, Aces High adapted the classic plot from the trenches to the Royal Flying Corps (one of the forerunners of the RAF). McDowell’s character, Gresham, was the equivalent of “Stanhope” in Journey’s End - the young but battle-scarred officer who had grown up quickly in war leading a RFC Squadron. The Army’s refusal to provide parachutes, in case it should encourage cowardice among pilots, is addressed in the film, causing a regular churn of men who are little more than schoolboys with a few hours’ flying experience joining the squadron to replace those shot down and killed in action. One of these men is “Croft” (the equivalent character of “Raleigh” in Journey’s End). Croft is a young, idealistic Second Lieutenant who admires Gresham for having been his house captain at school. But he soon sees a different side of his hero. Gresham himself - fearful that family back home will discover his developing drinking habit through Croft’s letters - reacts coldly to the boy’s arrival. Christopher Plummer plays Captain “Uncle” Sinclair, an older officer (based on the character “Osborne” in Journey’s End) who takes Croft under his wing and acts as a buffer between him and Gresham. Whilst the film tracks the plot of Journey’s End almost perfectly from an aerial perspective, it makes one key addition: whereas in the trenches the viewer never finds out what happened to most of the cast in the final attack (except Raleigh - though it’s often assumed the rest are also killed), in Aces High the outcome is made brutally clear with some survivors and some tragic losses. Vean que historia más interesante tiene este Ju 88, el C9+AR. El 30 de abril de 1945 fue el avión empleado por dos pilotos y sus familias para escapar a la neutral Suiza. El capitán Werner Hopf, del 8./NJG 5 y su operador de radio el tte. Dressler, y el teniente Erhard del 10./NJG 11 prepararon sus planes de escape en este avión. El teniente Erhard había pertenecido al 8./NJG 5, pero había sido transferido al Comando Welter, el grupo especial de cazas a reacción Me262. Una vez que cargaron el avión con combustible abordaron Hopf, Erhard, sus esposas, la hija de 6 años del primero y Dressler, y despegaron a la 1:30 de la madrugada. Tuvieron un tenso vuelo, ya que el cielo estaba totalmente controlado por los cazas ingleses, norteamericanos y rusos. Los Mosquitos y Black Widows se encontraban en permanente búsqueda de los cazas nocturnos alemanes. Robin Olds is known for the fact he is rated as a “triple ace” with 17 confirmed air to air kills. Impressive right? Well, also consider that he earned his legendary status because he earned the status of triple ace by serving in WW2 and Vietnam flying three separate aircraft. Earning “24.5 victories in WW2, 12 aircraft shot down and 11.5 aircraft destroyed on the ground” (af.mil), then during Vietnam he shot down “two Mig-17 and two Mig-21 aircraft” (af.mil). Olds himself stated he avoided shooting down his fifth Mig in Vietnam despite having over ten opportunities to do so because “he learned in the middle of June that Seventh Air Force, at the direction of Secretary of the Air Force Harold Brown, would immediately relieve him of command to return to the United States as a publicity asset if he did” Outside of his impressive career, Olds was known for his distaste for higher command, he was most known for his growth of a mustache following the success of his Operation Bolo (an operation responsible for the destruction of 7 of 16 VPAF Mig-21’s in service), on his well waxed and beyond regulation mustache, Olds stated “It became the middle finger I couldn’t raise in the PR Photographs. The mustache became my silent last word in the verbal battles (…) with high headquarters on rules, targets, and fighting the war”. Olds is credited for the creation of “Mustache March” where aircrew, maintainers, and other @usairforce personnel grown mustaches for one month in defiance of grooming standards. • The aircraft I drew is not based on Olds F-4 “Scat XXVII” but I will draw his in the future! Medal of Honor Monday: Lt. Col. Kenneth Walsh Lt. Col. Kenneth Walsh was awarded the Medal of Honor for his gallantry and combat aggression in World War II when his effort against adversary aircraft helped secure the Solomon Islands for the Allies in 1943. Still a private when he received his Wings of Gold, Walsh became a U.S. Naval Aviator on April 26, 1937, and began operating scout-observation aircraft from aircraft carriers. Walsh was the fourth ranking #USMC fighter ace in World War II with a record of 21 enemy planes destroyed. The @eduardmodels Space 3D instrument panel and general cockpit 3D decals ads a great super authentic touch with really small eye-catching details. Above I have a comparison between the plastic part from the kit with a decal on next to the 3D version. It makes quite a difference. The cockpit got sprayed with a Tamiya DARK Grey and weathered in with different shades of grey , white,black and even sand pigment since it's a Desert subject. I'm a bit behind schedule with posting. Fuselage halves are together now and I'm waiting for some RLM colours and a Mask set coming in the post this week. Paint stage is already in sight! On 3rd November 1944, an Fw 190 belly-landed at an allied controlled airfield in France - the pilot was quickly recognised as the missing Col Carr, downed by flak the previous day in Czechoslovakia. Carr had managed to ‘borrow’ the Butcher Bird from a Luftwaffe airfield he had baled out close by to - fleeing as low as treetop height, he managed to return home in an aircraft he had never before flown. Lowering the undercarriage, however, proved too difficult, and Carr’s flight to freedom ended as we see here. This article claims he was flying a monoplane though he had just joined Escadrille MF25 on January 21st, which would have been outfitted with Maurice Farmans. A true pioneer pilot, Pégoud "...became the first man in Europe to descend from an aircraft in a parachute.
