EXCITING NEWS!! Early last week I found out some amazing news for my small business! (I don’t think I’ve yet to properly realise what this will mean).. but read on to find out more…. A few weeks ago, I applied to Barnsley council’s museums, and I got accepted!!! Oh my people… this means so so much!! My designs will be on show and for sale in a few places dotted around Barnsley in the next coming weeks. I don’t yet know which galleries and historic sites, but my pieces could be in one or more of the following: - Cooper Gallery - Cannon Hall - Elsecar Heritage Centre - Worsbrough Mill When I found this out, I was returning from a walk with Charlie 🐾 and I just jumped up and down in the middle of the road (it was quiet where I was at the time)…. I was so over the moon! Even now, I keep pinching myself and telling myself this did happen. This did happen Cat! Just wanted to share with you all as I know I mentioned I had some excited news to share last week. So if you have been waiting, I’m sorry, I think I just needed some time to process it. Love Cat x
Brian’s Wild Wood & Giant Tiger Mosaic. There’s plenty to do after seeing Brian’s art at The Cooper Gallery. Pop upstairs to the Sadler Room where you could help complete the giant tiger mosaic. It’s 2,3m tall by 2,1m wide and comprised of 150 tiles. 40 or so still need filling in, by you, dear friends ! Materials are provided. All you need do is try replicate a small portion of the tiger. A model is provided for you to copy and it is so therapeutic. A great big art piece made by the community of Brian’s fans, imagined and created by our friend Paul Morton, aka @hot.frog who we thank for the initiative. Or just relax, play or read to your kids in Brian’s Wild Wood, then reward yourself with delicious cake in the downstairs tearoom or terrace on a sunny day 🌞 Now wouldn’t that be nice ! The curators from Barnsley Museums asked me if I would curate a blend of music to play at a private viewing to open their latest exhibition and associated events, focused on artist Brian Wildsmith’s life and work. This is what I came up with, hoping it captures some of the ethos of Brian’s work, the wildlife, colour, joyfulness, intricate details and nature. The Fellowship of the Smoke Ring Speak friend and enter! Tolkien wrote about a company of 14 in the Hobbit and 9 in the Lord Of The Rings - our company was initially 9 and then later 10 at our 'Prancing Pony'. On Saturday 24th February our fellowship made the long and arduous journey to visit the Experience Barnsley Museum & Discovery Centre to see the Magic of Middle-earth JRR Tolkien experience. We had a great time exploring the exhibition, examining the items on display, reading the museum labels… and talking amongst ourselves of Tolkien, the Hobbit, Lord Of The Rings, and even the Silmarillion. We then checked out the mining and general exhibitions on our way out, where one of our number noticed a pair of 17th C. clay pipes - one featuring skull and crossed bones and another reading "welcome guest" with a pair of shaking hands. We then took a short walk to the Joseph Bramah public house, named after a famed local locksmith and inventor of - among other things - the hydraulic press. We sampled many exquisite pipeweed blends, including a home grown mixture of sun cured dark Virginia and basma tobacco provided by a fine member of our fellowship. We smoked, ate, and drank like dwarves planning a burglary. We laughed merrily and blew our smoke rings and sailing ships. And whilst we may not have thrown the ring into the fires of Mount Doom, nor defeated a dragon, it was a very successful and enjoyable day. Happy New Year! Looking for the perfect winter walk, I’ve got just the place… Last New Year, we spent a lovely bright and brisk day at Worsborough Mill Country Park. A stunning 240-acre nature reserve, it’s a lovely place to explore with pathways that lead you through green flag and SSSi awarded green spaces. At the heart of the Country Park is a 60-acre reservoir, with various bits of art dotted around to spot. The main trail is about 1.5 miles, so perfect for little legs. The views were stunning and there was lots of wildlife to spot, along with art and sculptures along the trail. The kids particularly liked whizzing along the wooden walkways through the wetlands, although beware some parts were extremely muddy, so dress appropriately. There are also different trails and events throughout the year (there was a sensory trail and winter bird trail when we visited). Near the Mill you will find a playground which although only small, kept the kids busy for a long time, and was great bribery to get round the reservoir walk when the little ones were flagging. There’s also plenty of picnic benches here. I’d highly recommend treating yourself at The Millers Team Room, next to the Mill. They did the most delicious pizzas and cakes (made with flour from the Mill) – its only small and very popular so indoor seating is limited, however they will try their best to accommodate you. Don’t miss out Worsborough Mill (which was closed when we visited), a 17th Century working water mill, where you can discover centuries of milling, a unique opportunity to see history come to life. The Mill does events throughout the school holidays and pond dipping during the summer months, so keep an eye on @barnsleymuseums website. Do you know of any ghost signs around the borough? Historic England has created a fascinating new database of historic signs, typically hand-painted advertising signs, or old shop signs on buildings. Ghost signs are an important part of the historic fabric on our high streets and they can tell us much about our collective history. Did you know that the Swanee Pond in Kendray once belonged to a mansion house? There were 2 mansion houses on the site both called Pinder Oaks House. The first was built in c1500 and the later mansion was built in the late 1700s with 56 acres of land with access to coal. The spelling used for the area slightly changed and is now Pindar Oaks. A description of Pinder Oaks House in 1830 states that ‘a small never-failing stream of water runs through the property, supplying a fine sheet of water at the foot of the property’. The dyke of water was used to fill a large pleasure pond on the estate. The very name Swanee refers to the earlier name of the water being called ‘Swan Pond’ where small row boats and swans glided the waters. The historic Swanee Pond in Kendray is hidden away next to a peaceful Barnsley Cemetery and the Tuscany Gardens housing estate which was once the greatest tennis ball factory in the world, Slazengers. Millions of tennis balls were made at the factory and little neon yellow globes were sent to all corners of the world. Local children who used to play around the Swanee would peer over the factory walls and shout ‘can I have a ball please mister!’ In October we will be presenting a wonderful performance of folk songs by the Swanee to celebrate its history – more details to come. ME AND HISTORY… I’m preparing some additional copy that will accompany my prints, providing people with a bit of background history about me and my art. Now, as you’ve probably gathered, I can easily go off on a tangent and have a tendency to write (a little) too much! So, I’m going to be (or will try to be) as succinct as I can with these flyers. What’s been great about doing this is remembering just how much I love history – learning about places and peoples past. I studied history and geography at uni and I had forgotten just how much I love it. In particular, I enjoy exploring local history and have been known to get slightly obsessed when we go on holiday, reading about the history of a place and even the accommodation we’re staying in. In my preparatory notes I recalled reading a book about the local history of Cawthorne, a pretty and affluent village on the outskirts of Barnsley. One of my designs represents Cannon Hall, a popular Georgian country house museum and gardens which stands to the west of the village. I was fascinated by the info and images in the book and loved riding through the village with my friend (and employer at the time) spotting the remnants of the past that still pepper the place here and there to this day. I guess this was my first foray into local historical reading that really resonated with me. I already include a snippet of interesting detail with each of my A4 landmark and landscape prints, but for new stockists, I want these little ‘about me’ flyers to demonstrate my love of history and my passion for it, connecting me with my customers and with my art and the places I am reimagining. Hopefully they’ll be well-received. Reverend John Mason recalls seeing the wonderous aurora borealis, or northern lights, in the skies above Pindar Oaks House in Kendray on the 17 November 1882. It is rare to see the northern lights in Barnsley, where charged particles react with the Earth’s atmosphere to create the greatest light show in nature. The Swanee Pond was in the garden of Pindar Oak House and this beautiful illustration, by celebrated artist Liz Kay, depicts the mysterious northern lights dancing across a wintery still Swanee Pond back in 1882.
