200 L SPEYSIDE BOURBON COOPERAGE® PREMIUM BOURBON BARREL The Speyside Bourbon Cooperage® has specialized in providing barrels for spirit-making since 1947. With that longevity comes a wealth of experience and knowledge in the industry. All our skill goes into making top quality barrels to meet the requirements and expectations of spirit-makers all over the world. The aim at Speyside Bourbon Cooperage is to ensure that barrels become a modern spirit-making instrument by combining age-old craftsmanship and state of the art techniques with equipment developed by the research and development team. Speyside Bourbon Cooperage purchases high quality Appalachian, Ozark and Northern White Oak, sourcing and hand-selecting all of its raw materials, much of it coming from within a 30-mile radius of the Jackson, Ohio facility. The oak is weathered for 24 months drying time in outdoor storage yards. After air drying, raw materials are brought inside the facility to bring the seasoning process to perfection. They operate their own kiln systems to ensure best, controlled drying. All staves and headings are jointed on custom made CNC jointing machines. CNC jointing makes a tighter fitting barrel, almost completely eliminating leaks and reducing evaporation loss. The quality jointing process produces a dimensionally consistent, repeatable barrel every time. All of the machinery at Speyside is new to the barrel making industry and custom for the facility. Modern manufacturing principles are built in, with quality control and safety being paramount. Au château La Rose des Vents, les barriques sont choisies avec soin. Elles sont en chêne, comme la majorité des barriques en France (quelques fois elles peuvent être en acacia ou châtaignier), et Bénédicte et Vincent, les vignerons, les veulent d'occasion pour obtenir un arôme boisé délicat dans le résultat final. Ces belles barriques finiront leur vies chez un ébéniste à Toulouse pour être converties en meubles. Chacune d'entre elle contient 300 bouteilles, soit 225 litres, qui correspondent aux 50 gallons impériaux de l'empire britannique, dont les vignerons d'Aquitaine furent longtemps les sujets et les heureux fournisseurs en vins. Les bouteilles stockées de nos jours par six représentent 1 gallon, nous sommes toujours sous l'influence de nos clients historiques ! At the winery La Rose des Vents, we choose the barrels with care. They are made with oak, like most of the barrels in France (sometimes they are made with acacia or chestnut). Benedict and Vincent, the wine makers, want them already used just to get delicate woody aromas into the wine. These beautiful barrels will end their lives into the workshop of a cabinet - maker in Toulouse and be converted into furniture. Each of them contains 300 bottles, that is 225 litres, or 50 imperial gallons of the British Empire, of which the Aquitaine winemakers were the subjects and happy providers for ages. Interested to tuck into this new-to-America #Japanese #whisky. @maenwhisky seems tailor made to target the crowd of new Japanese whisky fans and position itself well in the marketing / Instagram / TikTok-o-sphere. It is “made under the guiding principals of Zen.” The #NAS blend ($65) is 20% malt whisky and 80% grain (mostly corn and some rye), copper double pot distilled, and aged three to five years. While the blend is “made in a region of Japan where the purest spring water and humid subtropical climate make the perfect conditions for distilling and #aging high-quality Japanese whisky,” nowhere on the bottle or literature does it say this whisky is distilled in Japan (some or all of it may be - no clue, but guessing it’s bottled and possibly blended in Japan). It is a “product of Japan,” and JSLMA Japanese whisky standards were only set to go into effect this month, which means Maen may have squeaked in before the window closed on sourcing out of country. I will endeavor to find out more! The 8- and 12-year expressions ($125 / $165) are blended pure malts, which means they are blends of single malt whiskies from more than one distillery. All three expressions are aged in ex-bourbon #barrels (“well seasoned” for the NAS).
