BEAT BOP 2023 ©️ acrylverf schilderij 50 cm x 50 cm in zwart en wit. Het originele schilderij is gemaakt door de legendarische Jean-Michel Basquiat. Het artwork van de plaat is typerend voor zijn door graffiti beïnvloede stijl, chaotische botsing van beelden en tekst. In tegenstelling tot zijn kleurrijke canvaswerk zijn ze echter in zwart-wit getekend. De voorkant bevat zijn kroonmotief, ruwe schetsen van botten, een explosie (en daarin, het woord “bang!” In hoofdletters), en Romeinse cijfers. Het is ook een ontwerp voor zijn platenhoes met gelijknamige single. Deze werd uitgebracht door Profile sans Basquiat’s artwork. Cory Robbins herinnerde zich: Het ergste wat ik deed was... Hij zei: ‘Ik zal nieuw artwork maken voor je release.’ En ik zei: ‘Nee, nee, nee, we gaan het gewoon in het profieljasje doen.’ En dat was echt stom. Dat [schilderen] zou nu waarschijnlijk miljoenen waard zijn. Maar ik zit in de platenindustrie - ik wist toen heel weinig over kunst.” De cover spelt de naam van Rammellzee verkeerd, met slechts één L in plaats van twee, een feit dat Rammellzee zelfs in de jaren na de release van de plaat irriteerde. 50 years of hip hop and Basquiat Do yourself a favor and go see this exhibit but it probably wont ever be as magical without the panel discussion @_babyrich_ and I attended hosted by @arimelber featuring elder (but looking young, fit and healthy!) statesman @therealdougefresh @yoyofearless and @rapsody through whom The Universe spoke very clearly and powerfully about the power of authenticity. The art was 🤯, and I had my doubts at first but the ephemera and recreation of JMB’s studio, family living and dining rooms was incredibly powerful. I also loved the uplifting of the NYC 80s nightlife scene JMB was part of (it felt like my brother could have been there). I fangirled out on @brothercornelwest had my photo taken by @johnnynunez and (briefly, unobtrusively) did the electric slide with Lisane and Jeanine Basquiat to a set by @justblaze with a beautiful crowd I was honored to be part of, if only briefly. As we celebrate fifty years of hip-hop, treat yourself to a closer look at Jean-Michel’s artwork for the hiphop classic, Beat Bop, considered by Rolling Stone as one of the 100 greatest hip-hop songs of all time. Featuring Rammellzee and K-Rob, the song signified Basquiat’s foray into music production which, according to historian Francesco Martinelli, “marked a turning point in his relationship to the hip-hop scene.” Martinelli writes, “The title of the track could allude to the importance of bop music to the Beat poets, particularly apparent in Jack Kerouac’s The Subterraneans (1958), the book with which Basquiat chose to be photographed in 1988.” Join us on Thursday, September 7 for “Beat Bop: Basquiat and Hip Hop” at King Pleasure© LA. So, I reluctantly went to @moca... But, only to hear the conversation between Larry Gagosian (Basquiat's LA art dealer) Fred Hoffman (art historian and collaborator ) and Tamra Davis (Radiant Child documentary film maker.) The hour+ panel discussion was like being thrown into LA in 1982. It was really thought provoking and entertaining. A question from a guest was not really answered, but it's a great one: "How will the Estate ensure Basquiat's LA history is celebrated and not forgotten about?"
