The now violently rare #UltraBourbonUnicorn🦄 which is the #BerghoffBourbon 10-year old 107° Proof Black Label, bottled by @jvanwinkle7 for @berghoffchicago at his #LawrenceburgKY facility in the 1990’s. It is a delicious #Bourbon and a famous proof, well known from another 10-year old 107 also bottled at the exact same time (ORVW); the question is only; was it the same juice? My money, having tasted this, is that it was, because the relationship with the #BerghoffFamily was a multi-generational one that started at #StitzelWellerDistillery with Julian’s dad and continued right through to when he eventually moved over to #BuffaloTrace in Frankfort, KY in 2002. Going back to this fascinating collaboration between the @berghoffchicago #BerghoffFamily and #StitzelWellerDistillery - this is one of the OG bottlings done for this illustrious #ChicagoInstitution in the form of an 8 year old #BottledinBond called #BondedBerghoff which is reminiscent in the design of the #OldFitzgerald green labels that were produced at the same place and time and containing the same exact juice. This is late 1960’s distillate bottled in the mid-1970’s and it’s a fabulous dram 😉🥃. The content, which is close to a full quart, was not determined on the label, and the tax strip help us date this. #swipeleft⬅️ to see more…This was a result of the relationship between #JulianVanWinkleJr and #HermanBerghoff which ended up lasting close to 50 years, if you consider that @jvanwinkle7 took it over and moved it with him to the #OldCommonwealthDistillery in 1983. My beautiful Momma Bear @cathy_manning29 celebrated a major birthday on September 29th. My mother was born in Chicago in a hospital overlooking Lake Michigan, which I wanted to honor, and she mentioned how much she had enjoyed recently reading Devil in the White City, so I got to work planning a few events around that. We took a Gangsters and Ghosts walking tour that was absolutely awesome. I was super impressed that she already knew quite a bit about the places we were shown. I saw absolute joy and glee and excitement on my mother’s face, and that was the very best part. So much gratitude to Connor for being such an entertaining and knowledgeable guide. We enjoyed a delicious Oktoberfest lunch at the Berghoff Restaurant, the oldest restaurant in Chicago, which started with the owner selling beer at the World’s Fair in 1893. Then we joined Grandma Virginia and Carl for some barbecue in the south suburbs. I couldn’t ever adequately express my appreciation I have for this woman and everything she’s done for me, but I’m glad I was able to show her a good time on her day. RESTAURANT #94/365: The Berghoff Restaurant @berghoffchicago (17 W Adams St, Chicago, IL 60603) I'm excited to present to you my first German restaurant feature and my second restaurant I've tried in the Loop! The Berghoff is a fancy restaurant that'll capture the attention of anyone who walks by. With a fancy wooden interior adorned by murals, The Berghoff looks like a fascinating place to dine. It seemed fitting to split their sausage trio plate and their game sausage plate (which had venison, duck, and boar). All six sausages we tried were super delicious, although I had no idea which one was which! In addition, the sauerkraut that came with the sausage trio and the spätzel that came with the game sausage went perfectly with all that meat. The spätzel was so delicious and soft in particular! Of course, a German feast wouldn't have been complete without a couple beers and a massive pretzel. ---> 1972 - 2022 This one filled my eyes with tears as I remembered...I am trying to recreate Dad's photos by locating and standing in the same spot he stood and taking the same photo he did...50 years later. The Berghoff Restaurant on Adams Street in downtown Chicago Loop...so many happy memories here. ❤️ During summer months as a teenager, I took the train from our home in the Northwest Suburbs to Chicago's Union Station and met Dad at his office next to the Board of Trade Building on LaSalle Street. He was the Regional VP for Thompson & McKinnon Brokerage firm. I remember his office was so large and beautiful. It had a private bathroom and living room area and oriental rugs and beautiful art on the walls. I remember how his desk telephone rang constantly and thinking how important he must be. 😊 ❤️ Then the two of us walked around the corner for lunch, to his favorite restaurant for authentic German fare, ordering our favorite dish from the grand menu...the Wiener Schnitzel. It was father-daughter time filled with non-stop talking and laughing and eating delicious German food together. Standing here where Dad stood and remembering. Transported back in time. Memories filling my heart. Chicago’s oldest restaurant traces its heritage to Herman Berghoff, a German immigrant who sold his beer on the Midway during the 1893 World’s Fair. Berghoff beer proved so popular that, in 1898, Herman opened this restaurant on Adams Street to sell it. The family still owns the establishment, and it was awarded Chicago liquor license number 1 when Prohibition ended in 1933.
