RESTAURANT #271/365: Zora Restaurant / Kafana Zora @kafana_zora (8445 W Lawrence Ave, Chicago, IL 60656) This year I'm really intent on trying restaurants in all the corners of Chicago, so today I figured I'd visit the city's northwest corner by O'Hare. Kafana Zora is a Serbian restaurant in the neighborhood of Schorsch Forest View. I've had Serbian food once or twice, so it isn't a brand new cuisine to me. I recognized some dishes on their menu, but I wanted to try something new. I ordered their "Leskovacki Ustipak," which came out as three meat patties stuffed with cheese and bacon bits. It also came with two cream cheese dips, thick-cut fries, diced red onion, a tomato slice, and a basket of very soft bread. For drinks, I started off with a Markovic Merlot. After I finished that, I asked for a recommendation for a bottled Serbian beer. My server brought a "Lav," which was delicious and smooth. It went well with the food! The Ustipak was delicious, and the cheese stuffing was honestly perfect. I've had similar Eastern European meat patties before, and these definitely hit the spot. It was a pretty filling meal, but I wasn't uncomfortably full by the end. The onions and cold cheese spreads made this plate even better. This week I’ve been struck down by a cold so thought the best way to resolve this would be to make a good soup. For this, I tried to recreate a dish my boyfriend has been making a lot recently, a traditional Bosnian soup recipe called Tahran, that’s like a tomato soup with a classic sofrito base (some choose to add red peppers, I did in this case for extra veggies) and features little pasta crumbs/bits that have a sourdough like taste. Working at an Italian food company, I often get bits to take home and fortunately, I got given these gnocchi sardi (Sardinian gnocchi, which isn’t gnocchi and more like a mini conchielle), and have currently got 6 bags of pasta in the cupboard to get through, so I used that! I’m also pretty bad at chopping veggies finely, so that explains why in pic 3 when I was sweating my soffrito it’s chunky as fuuu… I also (untraditional) fried off chicken thighs before adding in the veg, and then kept them in the soup for extra flavour and hopefullly some extra nutrition too - trying to give some form of chicken soup vibes. Overall - 10/10 would defo try this recipe again, perhaps more traditional but still not a bad effort for the first tomato soup I’ve ever made. Mowgli Street Food to jedna z moich najukochańszych restauracji i gdy zobaczyłam tę książkę w Waterstones, musiałam ją mieć. Najczęściej robię z niej moje 6 podstawowych przepisów i są pyszne. Tak, jeden z nich to Butter Chicken, bo jestem białym stereotypowym człowiekiem, a co? 😂 Jeśli lubicie kuchnię indyjską i czytacie po angielsku to bardzo polecam. Niestety nie ma jej wydanej w Polsce, ba!, nie ma jej nawet na LubimyCzytać! Może powinnam ją dodać, chociaż ostatnio zauważyłam, że gotowanie nie jest często spotykanym hobby. Ludzie zazwyczaj gotują z musu nie dla przyjemności. Czy tak jest też w Waszym przypadku? 🤔 Tak btw Mowgli jest sieciówką w UK, którą założyła brytyjska celebrytka Nisha Katona. To mega ciekawa osoba, bo przed swoją karierą szefowej kuchni i restauratorki przez 20 lat... była adwokatką zajmującą się ochroną dzieci! Went to Golden Diner with a friend recently and ordered their famous honey butter pancakes and chicken katsu sandwich. The pancakes were so fluffy and crispy at the edge. Absolutely delicious and not as sweet as I thought it was going to be. Definitely something to share though.
