J.S. Bach Ascension Oratorio This Anglican church at the northwest corner of the intersection of Broadway and Osborne Street in Winnipeg replaced a predecessor church by the same name, which had been constructed slightly to the east in 1883. When city plans called for the northward extension of Osborne through the existing church, the building was demolished and construction of the replacement commenced in mid-1926, on a design by the architectural firm of Northwood and Chivers. A cornerstone was laid at a ceremony on 25 September 1926 and dedication of the new building occurred on 23 December 1926. An attached Parish Hall at the west end of the church, designed by architects Frank Norlande Ruttan and George Stewart, was constructed in 1964 by the Surety Construction Company. It was torn down in 2018 to make way for the West Broadway Commons, a free-standing, 12-storey, 110-unit housing project with 56 affordable units. The structure was built as a joint venture between the church and the University of Winnipeg Community Renewal Corporation 2.0. The church became a municipally-designated historic building in 2017 and, in 2023, it received a sustainability award from Heritage Winnipeg. #JoemaxSKiamcoPhotography #AllSaintsAnglican #winnipeg #manitoba #wpgnow #exploremb #travelmanitoba #winnipegphotographer #ywg #wpg #gowpg #manitobaphotography #onlyinthepeg #bestofmanitoba #exploremanitoba #winnipegwedding #canadagram #winnipegphotography #wpg365 #prairies #canada #finditdowntown #explore204 #tourcanada #mb #snapshot_canada #igerswinnipeg #ig_canada #discoverneeps #yourmanitoba

I encountered this fascinating little critter today when entering the Tropical Biome of The Leaf in Assiniboine park, Winnipeg, Manitoba. In doing some research, I think it’s a Gecko, though it could also be a Skink or a Lizard. Its angular head, smooth skin, long toes with tiny gripping claws, and a tail longer than its body, leads me to believe it’s a Gecko. Apparently, Geckos are often found in tropical biomes. The only other critter I’ve seen in this Leaf biome was a large snail. Apparently, Geckos are great climbers, never slipping, due to microscopic hairs on their toe pads. I also discovered a trait that made me laugh. It’s called “tail autonomy.” When threatened, they can leave their tail behind, which serves as a distraction while they escape. The tale eventually grows back. They can also talk to each other, using chirps, clicks, and barks, especially during mating season. Finally, they have excellent night vision, with eyes 350 times more sensitive to light than ours, which is perfect for hunting in the dark. These fascinating characteristics, among others, explains why they’ve had evolutionary success across different habitats worldwide. The great Canadian literary figure Margaret Atwood said: “In the end, we will conserve only what we love; we will love only what we understand; and we will understand only what we are taught.” Her words underscore the need for education about all forms of life, fostering a deeper appreciation and conservation efforts for even the smallest of creatures, like this Gecko! Be kind friends to all living things. Love life. This is an entrancing Daffodil. Its botanical name is Narcissus. It’s not growing outside yet in Winnipeg, but I found it in the Mediterranean Biome of The Leaf, Assiniboine park. The name “Narcissus” originates from the Greek myth of Narcissus, about a young man who falls so deeply in love with his own reflection in a clear pool of water that he never moves, and eventually dies on that very spot. In some versions of this myth, a beautiful flower springs up where he died, which is named after him = the Narcissus. My hope is that yesterday’s eclipse frenzy across North America might encourage people to appreciate: that this Earth is our lifeboat in the cosmic sea of space. However, perhaps we humans are as self-obsessed as Narcissus, only as an entire species. We believe we have some preordained special status, and are therefore less vulnerable to the vicissitudes of nature than other species. And religions tend to legitimize this misperception. For example, according to Western monotheisms (Judaism, Christianity and Islam), humans were “made in the image of God“ and therefore special in the order of creation. In Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism, generally speaking, humans are unique because, more than other creature, we can understand and follow our Dharma. Dharma concerns those divinely ordained principles of law and order specific to every lifeform. Humans alone have the capacity to become enlightened and escape the eternal entrapment of samara, the endless cycle of birth, suffering, death, and rebirth. However, modern science and ecology begs to differ. It does not assign a “special status” to human beings the way religions do. Instead, it sees humans as one species among many within the biosphere, albeit with unique characteristics that are now having profound impacts on global ecological processes. Be well friends. Love the diversity of life around you. And be kind to yourself and all living things.

My husband is usually the driver but somehow always manages to spot the wildlife before me. This bald eagle was perched at the edge of a forest and, despite being far away, it was unusually large so not sure how I missed it. Fun fact: Eagles can grow to be 40” tall. That’s over 3 feet! Imagine an eagle the size of a toddler. 😂😭 . . . . . . . . . . . #rural #baldeagle #eagle #exploremb #explorecanada #travelmb #travelmanitoba #explore204 #manitobafeatures #ywg #ipulledoverforthis #birding #bird #eagles #wildlifephotography #wildlifeofinstagram #donsphoto #birdphotography #birdlover #eaglesofinstagram #manitobaphotography #bestofmanitoba #natureza #nature #birdsofmanitoba #birdsofprey #birdphotography #angrybirds

This is a mesmerizingly vivid blue “Blueweed” blossoming at the Mediterranean Biome of The Leaf in Winnipeg, Manitoba. It’s considered a “weed” because it thrives in a wide range of environments, from roadsides to fields and wastelands. The flowers are highly attractive to bees and other pollinators as a rich nectar source. The Greek philosopher Plato said: “The contemplation of beauty causes the soul to grow wings.” We all need something in our lives that we see as “beautiful,” something that uplifts our soul, inspires us to keep going, and awakens us to those mysteries that are all around. Kindness is a form of beauty. So, friends, be kind to yourself and others. Beauty awaits. #Manitoba_photos #Winnipeg #Manitobafeatures #Manitoba #Manitoba_photos #Blue #WinnipegManitoba #YourManitoba #theleaf #ExploreMB #climate #flower #manitobaphotography #travelmanitoba #BestOfManitoba #yourmanitoba #MyManitoba #travelmanitoba #WinnipegManitoba #theleaf #AssiniboinePark #Flowers #sweetpeashrub #Blossom #Blueweed #vividblue

The Iris blossom is my favourite. I love its curly, tongue-like shape, along with its vibrant yellow-brown-blue swirls of colour. It was newly blossomed when I encountered it yesterday in the Tropical Biome of The Leaf in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The Iris has long been associated with royalty all throughout history - especially in France and Italy. American educator, philanthropist, humanitarian, womanist, and civil rights activist Mary McLeod Bethune (1875-1955) said: “I have had more than half a century of such happiness. A great deal of worry and sorrow, too, but never a worry or a sorrow that was not offset by a purple iris, a lark, a bluebird, or a dewy morning glory.” Stay well friends. Enjoy the spring weather. A peculiar but still beautiful orange Bromeliad flowespike, found in the Mediterranean Biome, The Leaf, Winnipeg, Manitoba. American author and environmental lawyer James Speth said: “I used to think the top environmental problems were biodiversity loss, ecosystem collapse and climate change. I thought that with 30 years of good science we could address those problems. But I was wrong. The top environmental problems are selfishness, greed, and apathy…to deal with those we need a spiritual and cultural transformation – and we scientists don’t know how to do that.” May we all bring to life, in ourselves and others, that “spiritual and cultural transformation” so needed at this critical juncture in human history. One central feature of this requisite change must be truth-telling, the capacity to tell the truth about the major crisis of our time: the over-heating of our planet’s climate, perhaps to a point of no return (as well as what is happening in Gaza). As Hannah Arendt noted just after the second world war: “The ideal subject of totalitarian rule is not the convinced Nazi or the convinced Communist, but people for whom the distinction between fact and fiction (i.e., the reality of experience) and the distinction between true and false (i.e., the standards of thought) no longer exist.” I fear that with the coming onslaught of disinformation and outright lies expected from political arenas in Canada and the United States, that totalitarian tendencies are emerging that will mute the need for this desperately needed “spiritual and cultural transformation.” Here then is the challenge of our time, politically, culturally, and personally: to never lose our capacity to distinguish between truth and falsehood, between what is right and what is wrong. As Arendt so clearly reminded us: “The result of a consistent and total substitution of lies for factual truth is not that the lie will now be accepted as truth and truth be defamed as a lie, but that the sense by which we take our bearings in the real world - and the category of truth versus falsehood is among the mental means to this end - is being destroyed.”

A beautiful red Bromeliad flower-spike, found in the Mediterranean Biome, The Leaf, Winnipeg, Manitoba. The Greek philosopher Aristotle said: “Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but we rather have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.” Friends, act with kindness towards yourself and others until kindness is a habit. And when you fail, forgive yourself, until it too becomes a habit. Forgiveness is on tap this Easter weekend. Drink heartily 😊. #Manitoba_photos #TropicalBiome #MediterraneanBiome #Manitobafeatures #Winnipeg #Manitoba_photos #humour #WinnipegManitoba #YourManitoba #theleaf #exploremb #red #manitobaphotography #flowerspike #Wonderment #travelmanitoba #BestOfManitoba #yourmanitoba #MyManitoba #travelmanitoba #WinnipegManitoba #Bromeliad #Assiniboinepark #Winnipeg #Manitoba #theleaf #Aristotle #Forgiveness

A morning sunlight spectrum on our wooden stairs. This sunlight dispersion was created by the bevelled windows in our front door. Dispersion is the separation of sunlight into its component colors. American poet laureate and Pulitzer prize winner Conrad Aiken (1889-1973) wrote these words about sunlight: “All that is beautiful, and all that looks on beauty with eyes filled with fire, like a lover’s eyes: all of this is yours; you gave it to me, sunlight! all these stars are yours; you gave them to me, skies!” And then Quantum British physicist David Deutsch reminds us that all human knowledge is only ever provisional, that our current theories about reality are only stepping stones towards a deeper understanding. He writes: “Everything we know is only some kind of approximation, because we know that we do not know all the laws as yet.” Be kind friends, miracles abound, around you and in you, in the tiniest and grandest, in the subatomic, in the cosmological, everywhere! Be the sunlight that you are, with your very own spectrum of truth, beauty, and goodness. #Manitoba_photos #Winnipeg #Manitobafeatures #Manitoba #Manitoba_photos #diffusion #WinnipegManitoba #YourManitoba #ExploreMB #biome #deutsch #daviddeutsch #ConradAiken #Aiken #travelmanitoba #BestOfManitoba #yourmanitoba #MyManitoba #travelmanitoba #WinnipegManitoba #Quantumphysics #QuantumPhysicist #Dispersion #Spectrum #Sunlight #Sun
