Spotting wildlife is one of my favorite parts of exploring the outdoors. Usually it's from the distance or my car while driving. This curious guy was on the trail and rather than directly join the other moose in the lake, he approached me and the other hikers while we tried to keep distance and a tree between us. 🌲 Sharing an important trail reminder from @rockynps Rocky Mountain National Park 🌲 Spring is here, which in the Rockies means be prepared for snow on trails at higher elevations and wet, muddy, or slushy trails at lower elevations. It is currently snowing at higher elevations today. Wear clothing to keep you warm including waterproof boots and bring traction devices for the bottom of your boots. Hiking poles are helpful too! If planning to hike to higher elevation areas, snowshoes are still advised. Also, be careful around alpine lakes, rivers and streams. The arrival of springtime temperatures means that ice is melting. Use caution when walking on and around all snow-covered bodies of water. The ice underneath may be very thin. It is strongly advised to avoid walking on the surface of frozen lakes. But if you're short on time, here are 4 things that I recommend you prioritize: 1. Alberta Falls: Located in the Bear Lake Corridor, Alberta Falls is just a 3/4-mile hike from the Glacier Gorge Trailhead. It's a lovely hike along the river, and the waterfall is gorgeous! 2. Old Fall River Road: Take a scenic drive up the mountainsides on this one-lane dirt road from 1920. The views are stunning, and the chances of spotting wildlife are high! 3. Ute Trail: My favorite hike of our trip was the Ute Trail to Tombstone Ridge. It was also the hardest due to the rocky path, but these ridgeline views just hit differently. It's about 1.8 miles each way, so bring snacks and water! 4. Alpine Ridge Trail: Despite its short length, this trail earns automatic bragging rights. Seeing them is one thing, hiking into them is another, and being on the top is… scary lol. “There’s nowhere to fall” - a woman on the trail. Her voice will forever be in my head when I’m doing some scary hiking thing. Andrew never looked so small! 😂 Another epic vacation in the books for @dobbalopolis & I. We hiked over 40 miles in 6 days. When it snowed a foot over night on day 6 we went for it… 4 miles was nothing compared to the previous days… then we did the mountain coaster before leaving Estes and visiting friends in Castle Rock. There was a lot of stretching and we took advantage of the hot tub outside of our door. Can’t wait to come back to this place some late summer/early fall in the future. Rocky Mountain National Park. My first snow hike! We weren't sure what to expect because of the snow storm the night before but we did a popular hike from Bear Lake up to Nymph, Dream, then Emerald Lake and the trails were well traversed and pretty packed down, only a few questionable areas! The area got over a foot of snow the night before and had around 6ft of snow built up in places. It was snowing the entire time we were there. Coming from somewhere that rarely gets snow, it was ethereally beautiful walking the trails and around the frozen, snow-covered lakes. This is in my top 5 most fun hikes because of the snow! #rmnp #hikingadventures #snowyhikes

✨The PERFECT Rocky Mountain National Park hike for spring. ⬇️ Welcome to Gem Lake! Sitting at a lower starting and ending elevation than other lake hikes in the park, Gem Lake is a perfect choice for this time of year. The temperatures are ideal, the snow has mostly melted, and it’s a relatively quiet time in the park before the summer tourist season. Here’s what you need to know: 📍Gem Lake Trail 🚙Park at Lumpy Ridge Trailhead 🎟️General Park Access Timed entry reservation required starting May 24 🥾4 miles 📈987 feet elevation gain 👉TIP: The trail is probably muddy in places, but the best thing to do is walk right through it. Don’t step off-trail to avoid stepping on mud, because this widens and erodes the trail. You can rinse your boots off at the lake! 🐿️There might be some cute little ground squirrels begging for a snack, but please do NOT feed them. 💚As always, Leave No Trace 👉Tim and I hiked to Gem Lake after work one day last week and it was so much fun. Here’s a little photo recap: 1. We got the most beautiful sky and reflection while we were at Gem Lake!! 2. Couldn’t resist wading out in the water for a photo op with the aesthetic log. Yes, it was cold! Check stories for a little BTS lol 3-4. I was amazed at stunning the views were throughout the trail. You can see the span of the continental divide from so many points on the hike! 5. It even has a trail toilet. RMNP has the best trail bathrooms, I might have to do a round up post haha 6.
