The exposures were made under clear skies during the April 8 total solar eclipse. For that location near the center line of the Moon's shadow track, totality lasted over 4 minutes. Along with the solar corona surrounding the silhouette of the Moon planets and stars were visible during the total eclipse phase. Dolomites is a very special place to me. Not only it offers you splendid views, but it calms the mind. We come back almost every two years to enjoy the jagged peaks, the cozy mountain huts, the food and of course the night sky. That specific night I captured my favorite and best image (the huge panorama of Tre Cime). The aftermath was that astro selfie to seal the memory. Technically it's maybe one the of hardest shots that I've done and processed. Not perfect, still the result is very good. I had to focus stack 4 images (not enough) to get as many details as possible. Also the flowers near me were so beautiful, but I couldn't get a still shot of them as there were wind gusts all the time. Still, a night to remember! However, we can still find one such place in the Bolivian altiplano, a high-altitude region in the Andes mountain range, averaging 3,700 metres above sea level. This place is simply fascinating, with skies so dark that the stars seem to be within reach. It is curious that, despite the darkness of the night, the glow of the firmament illuminates the ground without the need for obtrusive headlights. It is a true paradise, with most of the skies having a Bortle 1 classification, as can be seen in this photograph, and around 4,600 metres in altitude. The rock formations are simply incredible, offering so many possibilities that it would take many nights to fully enjoy their compositions. 'Eclipse 2024' I finally found the time to sort trough all my images of the 2024 Solar Eclipse and to create this composite image, showing the different phases of the stunning event. Starting clockwise from uneclipsed Sun top center, the image shows the progression of the partial phase until totality begins with the Baily's Beads and the solar prominences on the bottom center right. From bottom center left the opposite sequence starts with the Baily's Beads and the even bigger prominences at end of totality, followed by the second partial phase until the Moon finally disappears again on top. In the center of this circle is the eclipsed sun and the magnificent solar corona during totality. Rome for Improvement ~~~~~ Roman columns greeting the night. There once were many reliefs, Roman columns, facades, griffins, statues, and more here, all reminiscent of ancient Rome. Almost all have been destroyed by the elements or vandals. While this is often listed as an abandoned movie studio, it seems to actually be the abandoned site of a sculptor. I illuminated the night scene with warm white light from a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light during the long exposure. Light painting to illuminate subjects is a beautiful, addictive art, as you can walk around the scene, deciding what to bring to light and what to keep in shadow. In this case, I chose to mimic the lights from the town and the still-rising full moon, goosing it along a little and keeping the light very natural. The summer must have been a scorcher in South Island. These exposed mud flats were ideal to shoot a dramatic foreground. Arche galactique Sarthoise 🌌 La première de la saison est réussie ? Mi-avril 2024 j’ai débuté ma saison de la voie lactée en Sarthe avec un lieu qui devait être beaucoup plus photogénique que cela. J’avais au préalable sondé le secteur et trouvé un spot avec un parc éolien. Ce soir là il nous annonçait pas de vent, donc j’étais certains d’avoir des éoliennes immobiles. Quelle était ma surprise quand je suis arrivé sur le terrain et que ces éoliennes tournaient… Je me suis quand même amusé à réaliser un panorama à 200 degrés de l’arche galactique de avec un suivi sur monture équatoriale. C’est la première fois que je réalise ce genre de panorama avec suivi. Ce n’est pas évident mais je prends la main petit à petit. Et dans l’ensemble je suis plutôt content de ce point de vue dans les champs de colza. Et toi l’artiste qu’en penses-tu ? Trouves-tu ce panorama réussi ? River of rock and stars - a 3 hour star trail above my favourite rock formation at White Pocket. This gully was amazing, the stripes of rock flowed like river towards the pinnacle at the end, rippling and curving on their way. When I found it faced north it was a compelling subject for a star trail, with Polaris over the pinnacle. I needed the separation of the near and far pinnacles so in the end positioned Polaris slightly to the left. I’ve attempted to use @roycebairphoto low level lighting technique here with a Lume cube on its lowest setting wrapped in a white tissue on one side to 90 degrees and a goal torch on the other set as low as possible. In Anzac Day went for a last minute drive with my mate @ivanzafiris_ to try to get an event that you only can see once every 70 years, hard to capture, still in process to edit it, bit after that I attempted to capture Orion Nebula, easy to spot in the night sky. It was a full moon night, and I am pretty happy with the results. The first time I took this nebula was a few years ago, without a tracker, and it was very challenging with the time I spent taking the pictures and editing, this time was a bit easier, but the same challenge, because I am not that good using Photoshop. The Mountain under Moonlight Shots from this morning (Saturday 27th April 5:32am - 6:26am) Story: Mt Taranaki / Taranaki Maunga from North Egmont Visitors Centre under a 90% full moon. The first shot is a 10 minute shot with star trails showing how far the stars have moved in that period of time due to the rotation of the Earth. 2nd shot is an 8 second shot. The fuzzy 'star' is Omega Centauri globular cluster which is estimated to contain approximately 10 million stars. In the last shot taken at 6:26am you can see a little bit of patchy snow / ice in a few places near the summit. I got up at 3:30am this morning hoping to capture aurora. I knew that the chances of getting aurora were slim and after a few test shots I realised that I'd best go to a plan B, so decided to drive up the mountain to get some shots from the carpark. I'm glad I did as the view was breathtaking, and the 4 degree temperature was a wake up and reminder that winter isn't far away. The Rise of Rho Ophiuchi Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex rises up over Cuyamaca Peak in the Night Sky. Cuyamaca Peak is San Diego’s 2nd tallest peak at 6,515 feet of elevation, even through its not the tallest its very prominent, I see it everywhere I go in San Diego, off in the background. The Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex is a complex of interstellar clouds with different nebulae, particularly a dark nebula which is centered 1° south of the star Ophiuchi. At an estimated distance of about 140 parsecs, or 460 light years, it is one of the closest star-forming regions to the Solar System. It also happens to be the first part of the Milky Way you see as it pops up over the horizon. After practicing photographing the Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex rising in Death Valley I decided to give it a try in San Diego. The night sky is not as dark but I wanted to see what I could get. I drove out to the San Diego backcountry and I was worried that I might not get the shot as the mountain top was surrounded by clouds. I’ve come to the conclusion that the sun was melting the snow on the mountain top creating the clouds around the mountain, as soon as the sun went down the clouds dissipated. I shot the blue hour foreground photo, then went back to my car and took a nap for a couple of hours and got up at midnight and shot the night sky until 4am, focusing of different compositions. Tracked and Stacked Sky ISO 500, 50mm, f/4, 180 seconds x 12 shots. I’ve been inspired by the work of Ralf Rohner, aka @skypointer2000, for a long time, and since I’ve been on a bit of an astro editing journey recently, I decided to finally use some images of the Orion Nebula and Mt. Whitney from my trip to Death Valley and the Eastern Sierras last April, to try my hand at my own deep-scape photo. The fun thing about taking foregrounds at the blue hour is that you can experiment with a lot more compositions and at White Sands you have different undulations and leading lines every direction you look. It was quite freeing especially compared to my usual process of setting up one or two compositions and then taking 4-minute exposures to get a nice low ISO foreground. I also love the green and the faint red air glow at the bottom of the shot. I only get the air glow in darker areas, but it’s such a cool extra dimension to the shot.

Flight to the Milkyway: 3.. 2.. 1.. lift off! Kutch boasts some of the most stunning rock formations, providing an excellent foreground for Milky Way photography. We arrived at the location early in the evening, scouting for the perfect foreground. After several searches, we were confident in our choice. However, in the middle of the night, while the shoot was underway, we stumbled upon another beautiful rock structure, leaving us wondering how we missed it initially. This highlights the abundance of beautiful rock formations in Kutch, making it challenging to choose the best one. Such is the allure of Kutch; i am in love with this place. The galactic core of the Milky Way rises above St Aidan’s church near Dardanup in the Ferguson Valley, Western Australia. Taken on a beautiful but very windy evening I light painted three frames of the church with my LED torch and the sky is three exposures tracked and stacked and blended them together in LR PS. I prefer to wait for one of my favourite Messier objects M24, the Small Sagittarius Star Cloud, to rise above the horizon as it’s purple colour contrasts really nicely with the orange and yellow glow of the core of our galaxy. “Everything begins with an idea” . I have been planning this shot for quite a while now and wasn’t sure how it would turn out, or if it was even possible. However from previous test shots of shooting the milkyway and taking into consideration the light pollution and flight path of all the airplanes, I knew that I had to give it a go. So a couple of nights ago I decided to take the opportunity with the clear weather, and with a setting moon early throughout the night I decided and attempted this shot. Battling the crazy sea spray it took me a few shots to get the composition right and ensure a clean image of the foreground. After I managed to get a couple good shots of the foreground I focused my attention to the milkyway, and this is where things almost fell apart. This particular spot even though it’s quite far out to the ocean, has a few disadvantages. There is heaps of light pollution, it’s windy and the flight path of the planes is a big headache, and as such trying to shoot a tracked milkyway is impossible. So I wasn’t about to give up and decided to change location and shoot the milkyway from Wanda Beach as I knew this location would work as I have tested shots from here before.
