Everyone, Meet Kira Willman! Kira is a Community Education Specialist II at CalFresh Healthy Living UCCE. Kira shared that although this is her first year on the committee, she truly loves how accessible this event is to our community. “Having a free, fun event that encourages health and wellness for families is such a wonderful opportunity and I love seeing the ways we work to be inclusive and make it a safe and joyful experience for all who choose to participate.” Kira loves working with so many wonderful folks from local organizations that also prioritize caring for our community and uplifting families. Kira loves to stay active by getting outside, getting sunshine and fresh air! She loves nature walks, hikes, and bike rides. She also loves to play sports in a completely casual and non-competitive manner. She enjoys getting on the elliptical at the gym and have recently been working on increasing her strength and mobility through basic weightlifting. Kira eats the rainbow by making one pot meals where all her food groups are in one dish! She loves curry, stir fry and soups. Today, we’re going to tell you some neat facts about one of our newest animal ambassadors, Monstro. 🐛 This millipede (Paeromopus angusticeps buttensis) is one of the largest species of millipedes in the world! They have roughly 4 legs per body segment, totaling around 300–400 legs. You can think of them as very long roly-polys or pillbugs. 🦋 While other millipedes are detritivores and primarily feed on decaying organic matter like dead leaves and plants, this species prefers a diet of fruits, sprouts, and mushrooms. Monstro gets a very special diet of chanterelle mushrooms at the Nature Center! 🍄 Come see Monstro for yourself! Everyone, meet Steve Naiman! Steve is an Outreach and Enrollment Specialist at Ampla Health. Steve is the founder of Growing Healthy Children and has served on the committee for 18 years! Steve’s favorite part about GHC is seeing how happy this event makes children, families, and the community. Specifically, seeing their faces when they cross the finish line at the 5k or 1-mile, dancing to the music up on the mound and seeing the anticipation of possibly winning prizes and/or a brand-new bike! Steve shares that being a part of the planning committee is special because he gets to collaborate with past and new planning members, hearing new ideas and implementing them to make the event even more memorable to participants. Steve also thinks it’s special having the opportunity to motivate children and families to strive for a healthy lifestyle that incorporates movement and healthy food and snack choices. Steve’s favorite way to stay active is any physical activity! Specifically, running, swimming, biking, hiking, pickleball, ping-pong, and walking. Anything that stimulates the production of endorphins! Steve’s favorite way to eat the rainbow is to incorporate fruits and veggies into every meal and snack he has! Steve shares that when this event started back in 2007, he wasn’t sure how long it would endure considering it needed planning members, an agency to take on being the fiscal agent and funding. Barry Bartlett is the original owner and founder of Chico Septic and was in the septic business for years. In the 1970s, Barry Bartlett worked as a carpenter in Weaverville Ca. until one day, he came across an old septic truck and had an idea. He made a deal with the owner, purchased the truck, and thus his new journey began! He began pumping septic tanks for $50 a pop. Many years later, Barry made the move to Chico with his family and Chico Septic was born. Barry continued to run Chico Septic until 2014. Upon retirement, his daughter Rachel proudly took over the family business. Rachel has been in and around the business since she was 5 years old, at the age of 16, she helped with the business on weekends and during school breaks. Everyone Meet Suzie Lawry-Hall! Suzie is Business Development & Community Outreach Director at Enloe Health and a Mom! Suzie has been on the GHC committee for 10 years and is a former chair! Suzie loves everything about GHC “It checks all the boxes for me. It's fun, festive, inclusive, meaningful, and it's outside!” Suzie shares that being a part of the planning committee is a special opportunity to contribute to the organization of an event that aims to promote a healthier community. Chico is known for its outdoor active culture, which is one of its unique qualities. Providing opportunities for people to engage in these activities is important, as it brings them together and helps them discover common interests. The more we do together, the stronger our community becomes. Suzie’s favorite way to stay active is by running! Suzie and her family eat the rainbow by have a diverse range of colorful fruits and vegetables to choose from that they know will be eaten. Suzie involves her children in the meal planning and food selection process. They try to mix things up and try new fruit/veggies when they can!
