I’m not - even though I can’t remember the actual accident, I have developed PTSD, and I spend my days plagued by nightmares, random intrusive thoughts of being hit by cars, and panic attacks. The inflammation and chemical disturbance in my brain has caused me to develop major depressive disorder. Did you know that I have attempted suicide three times? I have put on nearly 30kg since the day of my accident, through a combination of medications and being unable to exercise properly. I have lost my identity and I no longer know myself - my brain and my strong body, previously two of my greatest assets, are damaged beyond recognition. I have nothing left of the life I used to love - no triathlon, no gardening, no exercise, no satisfying use of my brain in my job, no memory, no independence; I am a shell of my previous self that is existing in a kind of limbo, waiting and hoping desperately that I will get better, with no idea when or even if this might happen. You probably don’t think much about that day. I mean, you cooperated with police, you got your $80 fine and two demerit points, you sent me flowers in hospital to apologise. You did all the right things. So I guess your conscience is clear, right? I’m glad for you, and I hope you can sleep well at night. I hope you’re having a good life, I really do. Because I’m not. (2/3) I hope you’re having a good year. I’m not - you see, I’ve developed severe pathological fatigue as a result of my post concussion syndrome. I spend weeks at a time being completely unable to drag myself out of bed, sometimes sleeping for up to 18 hours a day, and if I attempt to push myself through the fatigue I am punished with needing an extra week or two in bed just to recover. I have gone from the long distance triathlon that I loved dearly, where I was training up to 25 hours a week at full training load, to being unable to exercise even 30 minutes per day, most days not even being able to exercise at all when my fatigue is bad. Some days I’m so exhausted, headachy, dizzy and foggy that I am unable to even put my girls to bed - I spend the evenings lying in bed, missing out on the precious time with my children, hearing them crying for mummy down the corridor. I have been diagnosed with slowed thought processing speed and fairly significant working memory deficits. The job I loved and was good at - figuring out, diagnosing, treating and managing the complicated and difficult internal medicine cases - is not currently possible, and may never be possible again; some days I struggle to even hold a conversation because I can’t think quickly enough, and/or can’t remember what I was going to say. I miss my job, my patients and my clients, a lot of whom had become like family to me. I struggle a lot with bending down and having my head down lower than my knees, as it brings on severe headaches, dizziness and fatigue, so gardening, my other great passion in life, is very limited. (1/3) An open letter to the driver of the car, who hit me whilst I was on my bike: I hope you’re having a good day. I’m not - I’ve been in bed since early yesterday evening with debilitating brain zaps. It feels like I’m constantly holding on to an electric fence, and being zapped from my brain right down to the tips of my fingers. Medications don’t help, and if I try to stand up it’s like I get zapped sideways, so I end up dizzy and have to lie back down. The blinding headaches have started now too, and the unbelievable pressure in my head that feels like my whole head will burst. I hope you’re having a good week. I’m not - I spent several days in hospital with excruciating neck pain thanks to the whiplash you caused when you hit me at 70km/h, and have now found out that I have to have spinal surgery to remove the intervertebral disc that has ruptured as a result of all the chronic inflammation. The surgery ismajor, needing 5 days in hospital after the procedure and roughly six months to recover. Six months where I can’t lift or carry my girls, six months where I can’t do any of the exercise I love, several months where I can’t drive, and at least a few weeks where I will need daily assistance to even look after myself, never mind being able to take care of things around the house or being able to care for my children.
