I thought I was not smart enough to become one; but my husband convinced me that I was. I went to nursing school at the age of 27, graduated, and took state boards on my 30th birthday earning the highest scores of my class. _____ I was forced to retire at 61 due to a traumatic brain injury suffered in an automobile wreck. Tragically, domestic violence is a leading cause of traumatic brain injury (TBI) – which has previously been more widely associated with contact sports. @NPR expanded on this, “[TBIs] are unfortunately very common – there was a national survey a few years ago, and it found that about 1 in 3 women has, at some point in her life, experienced severe physical violence by an intimate partner. Researchers say that most of these women have also had at least one concussion or what a doctor would call a mild traumatic brain injury. And of course, men and nonbinary people are also affected by this sort of violence. So in all, we're talking about millions of people.” The lasting effects of domestic violence are so detrimental to our whole community, which is why at @RaphaelHousePDX, we remain steadfast in our commitment to both violence prevention and wraparound support for survivors. It’s been over a month since Isaiah has been home following his traumatic dirt bike accident on 3.13.2024 I travelled down to Atlanta on Thursday so I could be there for his carotid artery stent procedure. He and I stayed overnight in the hospital and then when he was discharged, Mark and I packed up the cars and brought Isaiah home for the night. He was SO EXCITED to see the dogs and spend the night at home. We got him setup in our guest bedroom because I didn’t want him having to go up and down the stairs following the femoral artery puncture for his stent. Huff slept in bed with him at his feet all night. Isaiah said it was the best sleep he’s had in a long time. We also got him the @raybanmeta AI sunglasses. Isaiah asks “Hey Meta, describe what I’m looking at.” And the glasses will fairly accurately describe back to him, in a discreet way (speakers in the glasses behind both ears). To me, the anniversary of the car accident in 2013 is a time to reflect on how far I’ve come since I got my brain injury. I think this was an extremely important thing to do and was a really effective way to boost my motivation. We used to celebrate it every year by visiting the exact place it happened and talking about what we accomplished in the time after the accident. This was a really good thing to do, and I’m glad that as a family we did it. I would think about all of the things I originally couldn’t do right after I got my ABI (Acquired Brain Injury) that I learnt to do. I would mentally praise myself and think about how much more flexible my mind was becoming. However, now I think that I should move past that phase. This is because I feel like I’ve advanced to the point that I should put the past behind me. Sometimes I want to think about it, but I don’t feel like I need to anymore. I’ve learned from both the times I used to follow this tradition and from me reaching my next milestone. I appreciate my growth and all of those who help me, and I now feel the freedom to choose new paths for myself.
