Vangelis (in greco: Βαγγέλης), pseudonimo di Evangelos Odysseas Papathanassiou (in greco: Ευάγγελος Οδυσσέας Παπαθανασίου; Agria, 29 marzo 1943 – Parigi, 18 maggio 2022), è stato un compositore e polistrumentista greco. Fra le sue opere più acclamate compaiono alcune colonne sonore (come quelle per i film "Momenti di gloria", "Blade Runner", "Antarctica", "Missing - Scomparso", "1492 - La conquista del paradiso", "Alexander" e "Luna di fiele"), nonché il brano "Hymne, usato per le pubblicità della Barilla. Autodidatta nello studio della musica, Vangelis è cresciuto ad Atene e ha formato la sua prima band nel 1963, chiamata "Forminx", attiva per tre anni. Ha iniziato a scrivere musica per altri e due anni dopo si è traferito a Parigi, dove ha formato il quartetto prog rock "Aphrodite's Child" con espatriati greci tra cui Demis Roussos (il singolo "Rain and Tears" è stato un successo in tutta Europa). Successivamente ha iniziato a comporre colonne sonore per film e tv. Trasferitosi a Londra, ha raggiunto l'apice della fama negli anni Ottanta: tra i suoi successi senza tempo la colonna sonora per "Blade Runner", celebrata per la sua evocazione di una sinistra versione futura di Los Angeles. Successivamente ha lavorato alla colonna sonora di "The Bounty" di Mel Gibson e Antony Hopkins e di "Francesco" con Mickey Rourke protagonista. E poi "Bitter Moon" di Roman Polanski e i documentari di Jacques Cousteau. Månen är inte ny, bara nästan. Den är vacker mot kvällshimlen och jag tänker plötsligt på Roman Polanskis Bitter Moon, en av de bästa filmer som jag någonsin har sett. Men den här månen är inte bitter. Den är hoppfull och varm, en liten skära på en nattblå kupol som skänker mod och tröst. ”Man in the Moon” med REM är en bra låt, likaså ”Mellan månen och mitt fönster” med Peter LeMarc. Hinner tänka det efter jag att först tittat upp mot månen, sedan tagit en bild. Ett minne från förr dyker upp. Bangkok för massa år sedan; det var en klar himmel och en måne som var full och som hängde över sydostasien som en gammal sliten slant. En man – vi kan kalla honom P, en journalist på Expressen – lade sin arm över mina axlar. Det doftade avgaser från alla tuk-tuk som blandades upp med curry från matstånden och det var klibbigt och varmt trots den sena kvällen. Han pekade mot månen och sa: ”Ser du vad det är?” Jag: ”Månen, menar du?” Han: ”Exakt. När Expressen öppnar sin första redaktion där så ska jag bli deras korrespondent därifrån.” Det kanske inte är mot stjärnorna man ska sikta. Utan mot månen. What was supposed to be a relaxing weekend, turned into a technological nightmare. Apple sent me an invitation to upgrade my Mac operating system. I pushed the button, and immediately wished that I hadn’t- then spent the entire weekend tearing my hair out, as the download jammed, blocking a return to my home screen. Finally, I managed to reinstall the previous operating system- without wiping my entire hard drive- and I’m now back at my desk, typing away.
