Dean Corso (el mejor Johnny Depp), un mercenario de objetos preciados (libros en este caso), es un tipo de actuar cuestionable, que solo cree en las cifras que recibe por sus hallazgos, algo que sus empleadores siempre se lo recuerdan. Corso tiene una visión muy superficial de sí mismo, posee información pero no conocimiento, mucho menos poder, hasta que un buen día una misión lo llevará a las puertas de su propia coronación. En La Novena Puerta hay dos tipos de personajes que consiguen acceder a ese lado oscuro: están los ricos y poderosos, para quienes invocar al maligno es el último gran ingrediente orgiástico; y está el tipo común, que no lo invoca necesariamente, pero tiene todos los vicios latentes en él, los cuales, poco a poco, se lo van carcomiendo. En verdad nada de esto hay que tomárselo muy en serio, la película es un divertimento, una picaresca entretenidisima, casi una búsqueda del tesoro por escenarios de lujo, que se mofa de aficiones ociosas, también de sectas, logias, sacrificios de todo tipo y que tienen al innombrable como premio mayor. El efecto que consigue es peculiar. La Novena Puerta es una película vacía pero jamás hueca y en eso radica su encanto, esa es su metáfora del mundo que retrata. Salimos del cine con una sonrisa de oreja a oreja, pero al instante nos asalta la desazón ¿acaso nos está diciendo Polanski que este es el único camino que lleva hacia la cima del poder? Ante cualquier duda, pase o huya.

La escritora Delphine Daireaux (Emmanuelle Seigner) tiene que empezar una nueva historia luego del éxito de su anterior libro, que tomó como eje un episodio poco feliz de su vida, aunque pronto se dará cuenta que se encuentra tan vacía como una almeja. Entra en escena Elle (Eva Green) quien puede ser una fan, una doble, una sustituta, una secretaria, una enemiga o quizás ninguna de las anteriores. En Basado en una historia verdadera conviven la convalecencia y el sadismo para dar a luz una creación artística, experiencia extenuante en donde la escala de valores del creador y su identidad son nuevamente un enigma a descifrar. Elle encarna en ese sentido la neurosis ante el abismo de la página en blanco y en su enfrentamiento con la titubeante Delphine, que ya no sabe qué más contar, se estará invocando no solo la originalidad de una tesis literaria, sino también su éxito comercial. Todo este menjunje debería interesarnos más bien poco viniendo de europeos acomodados y que no tienen la preocupación de llegar a fin de mes, pero sucede lo contrario, la película es atrapante. Delphine poco a poco empezará a ver en ella misma un hilo narrativo a seguir y en su pasado no sólo las vergüenzas familiares, sino también las propias y para ello la película transmuta su ambiente burgués parisino por una aterradora casa de campo que pasa a ser el castillo embrujado de un relato de horror. Puro talento de Polanski que le saca el jugo a estas películas inofensivas y que intuimos debe estar tan agotado como su protagonista del negocio de la creación cinematográfica y la relación con sus fanáticos y enemigos.

Yo Acuso, que trata del infame proceso Dreyfus, es clasicismo a lo Polanski, pero es un clasicismo al final de una gran carrera, es decir, puesto al servicio de su figura pública y su estatuto de artista, hábilmente enmascarado en un formalismo apabullante. La película es un viaje hacia el pasado, al corazón mismo de la burocracia militar francesa de finales del siglo XIX y trata del honor arrancado a una persona y de la lucha de alguien por restituir ese honor, no necesariamente a la víctima, sino a la institución a la que ambos sirven: el ejército. L'epee Diabolique Label A Records Released 2019 Colour Ruby Vinyl L'epee is a Psychedelic rock band, consisting of members from The Brian Jonestown Massacre Anton Newcombe. The Liminanas Lionel Liminanas & Marie Liminanas and singer Emmanuelle Seigner. Even though I don't understand half the lyrics as they are in French, I absolutely love this album. This is a very groovy funky psychedelic album. Who ever thought putting The Limiñanas and Anton Newcombe together is an absolute masterstroke. Emmanuelle Seigner is someone I had never heard of, before I got this album but she has tge perfect voice for this type of music, I don't know what it is with the French that they have this breathy style of singing that no one else can do or do as good. If you are a fan of the Velvet Underground then you will find a lot to like here, even fans if pop music will find something to like on here. From Springfield 61, Ghost Rider, Un Rituel I habitual and La Brigade Des Maleficent you will find a broad stroke of psychedelia with pop sensibilities. The 40 minutes that this album last for absolutely flies past which is always a good sign of a great record. Even 5 years down the line I am still clinging onto the thought that there is going to be another album and hoping it's not just a pipe dream. Ostensibly a kidnap thriller, "Frantic" uses the formal architecture of the thriller to support a fascinating episodic character piece and an exploration of the restaurants, clubs, and apartments that nestle in the shadows of urban Paris after dark. After their taxi from the airport gets a flat tire, Dr. Richard Walker (Harrison Ford) arrives at a hotel in Paris with his wife Sondra (Betty Buckley). They're in town for a corporate medical conference in which he's the featured speaker. Dr. Walker is an unassuming man who's jet-lagged and looking forward to relaxing, editing his presentation, and spending some quality time with his wife. In one of the film's first masterful sequences, Sondra mysteriously disappears from their locked hotel room while Dr. Walker converses with her from the shower. Many notice the formal influence of Alfred Hitchcock on Polanski's films and this sequence is a sure sign that we're in the hands of a master. She's been kidnapped! This is a deliberately paced mystery that builds tension slowly always trusting the intelligence of the viewer to pick up the details and clues as the thriller gathers in danger and intensity. Paris has never looked more beautiful, and more sinister, where ancient rooftops induce vertigo and bohemian bums provide clues in a passive-aggressive dance for spare cigarettes. This is the film that introduced the world to the great French actress (and Polanski's wife) Emmanuelle Seigner and she's never been more sly, devious, and captivating. Last weekend's double-bill on Luke Honey's WEEKEND FLICKS. Cinema for Grown Ups was Jacques Tati's 'Mon Oncle' (1958) and Roman Polanski's 'Bitter Moon' (1992). Two very different films, both set in Paris. Bitter Moon stars Peter Coyote, Emmanuelle Seigner, Hugh Grant and Kristin Scott Thomas and is fast becoming a cult classic. What was supposed to be a relaxing weekend, turned into a technological nightmare. Apple sent me an invitation to upgrade my Mac operating system. I pushed the button, and immediately wished that I hadn’t- then spent the entire weekend tearing my hair out, as the download jammed, blocking a return to my home screen. Finally, I managed to reinstall the previous operating system- without wiping my entire hard drive- and I’m now back at my desk, typing away. Feb. 26 1988 was the premiere of Frantic. Now that France has “cancelled” Roman Polanski’s new film The Palace and refused to let it be shorn in his home nation, it’s a good time to revisit his excellent thriller Frantic with its exploration of “Ugly Paris,” or the seedy districts that tourists don’t visit or even know about. Harrison Ford, in one of his best understated performances, is jet lagged Dr. Richard Walker, in Paris for a medical conference with his wife Sondra - who disappears minutes after they arrive at their luxury hotel. The locals tell Walker not to worry - his wife probably has a lover in Paris, and she’ll come back once she’s had her fun. But when Walker discovers his wife accidentally picked up the wrong suitcase at the airport, he becomes convinced she was kidnapped. His search for her takes him to parts of Paris where drugs, terrorism and murder replace souvenirs and croissants in small cafes. A modest success in 1988, the film looks better than ever today as a Hitchcock-style thriller, and one that doesn’t waste time following the cliches of the genre. The movie also benefits from the marvelous, haunting score by Ennio Morricone. I have some major mixed feelings about At Eternity's Gate. I really loved Dafoe's performance and van Gogh. Honestly, he deserved the Oscar over Malek. As someone who respects Vincent van Gogh's work I appreciated the story being told. On the other hand I found the use of close-ups and POV shots distracting. Not to mention no one in the supporting cast really stood out (even Oscar Isaac). Ils se marièrent et eurent beaucoup d'enfants Yvan Attal 2004 Édité par Pathé et Distribué par ESCD (DVD, 2012) Un film qui m'a paru extrêmement vivant au moment où je l'ai découvert. Un tel lâcher prise qu'il en ressortait une certaine évasion artistique de la part d'Yvan Attal, le réalisateur. Les personnages s'extraient tellement des valeurs que la vie conjugale leur impose qu'ils en délivrent une jouissive liberté bien plus providentielle qu'une raisonnabilité faussement romantique. Musique signée Brad Mehldau qui a notamment composé celles d'EYES WIDE SHUT, SPACE COWBOYS et THE MILLION DOLLAR HOTEL. Charlotte Gainsbourg a rarement été aussi belle.
