He was tied to a tree until the police arrived. Hot-tempered, with a bottle in his hand, he had been insisting just before that the phone card he had purchased was defective. The events inside the supermarket were filmed by someone else in the store. The video went viral. Many blamed the victim, agreeing that the four men were only protecting the supermarket and its clients. In May 2017 the proceeding was closed. However, the victim was not able to testify in court; a week before the start of the trial his body had been found in the woods in central Saxony. Driven to ask questions ignored by the media and the court, Mario Pfeifer reexamines the incident through Again / Noch einmal (2018), gathering a jury of German citizens to review these events and decide on a verdict. CORPO FECHADO screens at the International Photography and Video Festival in Belo Horizonte (Brazil) Curated by Bruno Vilela, Guilherme Cunha and Patricia Azevedo December 7 – 12, 2020 Brazil and the world have been experiencing, in an accelerated way, situations of political polarization that aggravates crises and radically affect the lives of people and the planet itself. The images have been used to stir up discussions, whether through printed media, social networks, memes, fake news and manipulations that work as a tool, vehicle, weapon or device to generate disaggregation and confusion in the public sphere. Mostly this use of images aims to keep the concentration of income in the hands of the richest and so that their interests continue to be served by the governments of different countries. The proposal for FIF BH 2020 is to reflect how the images can collaborate for the understand of different cultures and the richness of the multiple forms of life. Each image brings with it a culture, a way of thinking and perceiving the world with its challenges and ways of dealing with the issues we live in. Our intention is to seek images which show directions, directing us towards possible solutions or resolutions to the challenges that are currently posed. How the image can contribute to the coexistence of multiplicity of thought and ways of life, how it can help in micro and macro-policies in an honest, ethical and responsible way without the need of extremists single reasons existence that should guide everyone. We are naming these aggregating images “Resolutive Images”, a term brought by the farmer and quilombola leader Antônio Bispo do Rosário (Nego Bispo) in the last edition of the Festival. Various cinematic genres and movements over the years have laid claim to truth in cinema — the actualités of the Lumière brothers, Kino-Pravda espoused by Dziga Vertov, the “ethnofiction” anthropological films of Jean Rouch, and the “ecstatic truth” of Werner Herzog’s documentaries are but a few examples. Although the documentary is still a viable cinematic genre, many filmmakers have now expanded the range of their practice to create works that cross between art and anthropology, documentary and fiction, education and entertainment, and galleries and movie theaters. Serious Games: Documentary Art between Fact and Fiction explores a cross section of documentary practice by German filmmakers and artists focusing on the subject of war and conflict. Various cinematic genres and movements over the years have laid claim to truth in cinema — the actualités of the Lumière brothers, Kino-Pravda espoused by Dziga Vertov, the “ethnofiction” anthropological films of Jean Rouch, and the “ecstatic truth” of Werner Herzog’s documentaries are but a few examples. Although the documentary is still a viable cinematic genre, many filmmakers have now expanded the range of their practice to create works that cross between art and anthropology, documentary and fiction, education and entertainment, and galleries and movie theaters. Serious Games: Documentary Art between Fact and Fiction explores a cross section of documentary practice by German filmmakers and artists focusing on the subject of war and conflict. Blurring the boundaries between fact and fiction, these works also demonstrate the fluidity of exhibition practice between the black box of the cinema and the white cube of the gallery.
