Gardening can be a therapeutic and empowering activity for individuals who are blind or visually impaired. Living Life Team, Inc. has taken a wonderful initiative by leasing a section of raised beds in the Madison Community Garden for the local blind/visually impaired community. Not only does this provide them with the opportunity to cultivate their own produce, but it also fosters a sense of community and togetherness. By engaging in activities like planting cucumbers, squash, tomatoes, and bell peppers, these individuals are not only learning valuable skills but also enjoying the benefits of fresh, home-grown produce. Let’s support initiatives like these that promote inclusivity and independence for all members of society. Join us in celebrating the efforts of Living Life Team, Inc. and consider how you can support similar initiatives in your community. Together, we can create a more inclusive and supportive environment for everyone. Special thanks to Living Life Team Founder, Rita Harris along with Henry Harris, Bernitha Revere, George Hunter, and Janet Hunter for making this possible. #LivingLifeTeam #CommunityGarden #InclusiveGardening #MadisonCommunity #BlindAndVisuallyImpaired

Why have a talking newspaper? Access to local news and events information can be difficult if you are blind or partially sighted, even if you have access to computer sites and blogs, they are not always designed to be accessible to people who are blind or partially sighted. This is why we provide a free, weekly audio recording of local news and events information. . To some listeners we offer companionship, to others we are simply a source of useful information. . To all, we provide a valuable service, which is free to access. . Week 5 Day 4 Prompt: Braille Signage in a Museum: A museum exhibit with clear visual displays alongside Braille signage for visually impaired visitors. Highlight features like touch-based exhibits. #midjourney #artificialintelligence #MuseumAccessibility #InclusiveMuseum #BlindAndVisuallyImpaired #TouchExhibits #BrailleSignage #SensoryLearning It is of interesting note to show that AI isn't perfect at language interpretation and the human experience. In fact as designers there is a lot we would consider "wrong" in these images as attempting to be accessible. Never the less, it is worth a discussion and perhaps opens the conversation up to the trouble of the human condition being interpreted by artificial intelligence models.

: “Mayowa and Ming come to life, arms curving and twisting in the air. Soft undulations; a current charging through them, black bodies swelling and dipping in, ever closer proximity, as if propelled through water. As they edge right to left, their ripples mirror and repel each other. Now towards the centre, the gap between them is closing, Ming’s arms pulse near Mayowa’s linen-clothed midriff.” In 2023, SoundScribe was commissioned by Seke Chimutengwende to manage the access provision for the tour of ‘It Begins In Darkness’. We provided live audio description, a pre-show access session and published a written + audio booklet offering diverse ways to access this work. This bespoke offer was designed for Blind & Visually Impaired audience members, as well as d/Deaf and Hearing Impaired audiences. Part of our work included speaking to cast member Mayowa Ogunnaike (my-oh-wa / og-you-nigh-keh), featured in this image. She is a British-Nigerian performer with a dark-brown complexion. Born and raised in London, she’s in her late twenties, with hair styled in short twists and a tall, athletic build. She wears a pale-pink linen suit jacket with matching wide-leg trousers. The two-piece is baggy and oversized - the hems of the trouser legs touch the ground and the jacket often slips off her shoulder. #audiodescription #contemporarydance #accessibility #accesswork #accesspublications #blindandvisuallyimpaired #deafandhearingimpaired #london #soundscribe @sekechim @lucebabes @shivaangee 📸 @harryclarkharry

: “Elaine, a bespectacled black woman in her thirties, grins proudly as she holds up a copy of our access booklet. Her fluffy white fleece and dramatically poofy white skirt camouflage her into a white armchair. To her left is a large window and behind her on a bookshelf are the various paraphernalia of her cozy living room.” SoundScribe is indeed especially proud of our publication, ‘New Ways to Access: It Begins In Darkness’, which is a written and audio booklet designed especially for blind + visually impaired and d/Deaf + hearing impaired audience members. We worked closely with Seke Chimutengwende’s creative team, alongside our own network of blind consultants, captioners, graphic designers and sound engineers to produce this publication. If you’d like to learn more about what we can produce for your work, please get in touch! We offer free 20-min consultations for new clients to discuss what might be possible for you. #audiodescription #contemporarydance #accessibility #accesswork #accesspublications #blindandvisuallyimpaired #deafandhearingimpaired #london #soundscribe @sekechim @lucebabes @shivaangee

In early December funds from the #MJBall22 were used to hold a party for blind & visually impaired children from Henshaws Society, via Variety, the Children’s Charity. 5 Reasons Blind People Should Not Get Long Acrylc Nails: I think we should have the right to feel pretty or attractive. When I discovered I could not type, I cried. These were some interesting experiences of problematic situations I never though to consider. I loved my nails, but felt called to share this. This was very interesting and I am grateful for this experience. My cat looked very disappointed my nails were gone. 1. I could not feel the skin around and on top of my nail beds, so I couldn't be polite by moving a plate while feeling other objects on a table around me, just as an example. 2. My skin around and above my nails also got random tingles, as if they got numb. 3. I could not sweep the ground to find things I dropped. 4. They got in the way of my cane when I tried to hold it with one finger on top flat in it. 5. I have no spacial reasoning. I could not do things like zip up my pants, open a car door, scratch an itch, pick up medications out if a bowl, unwrap a piece of candy, or clean. I never felt ao grateful for the feeling of my own hands! I kissed them and swore to them I would never take them for granted again. Blind stuff asside, I never knew how much I love uaing my hands until rhis. I learned a lot. It forced ne to let go of stubborn independence and open up to accept help. I also accepted parts of nyself I never knew were there. * #blindandvisuallyimpaired, #nailart, #acrylicnails, #lifestyle, #experiences, #reflective, #thoughts,

And that’s a wrap! Last evening we had our holiday program at school. To say my heart is full is an understatement. Our students put their heart and soul into each of their performances which included a band and play production. We practiced, practiced and practiced. To see it all come together is testament that practice is progress without focusing on perfection - bc, truly, there’s nothing more beautiful than making any piece or play your own - now that’s absolute genuine perfection - authenticity and individuality. 🎥🎬 #thatsawrap #action #lightsactionchristmas #WSBVI #schoolphysicaltherapist #blackandwhite #blindandvisuallyimpaired #practicepracticepractice #progressnotperfection #heartandsoul #grateful #holidayseason #theater #band

It's a big week this week! Not only is it National Braille Week, where we aim to raise awareness of the importance of learning Braille. It's a vital communication method we teach at our school (the Royal Blind School), allowing those who learn Braille to access the world and communicate confidently. But, it is also our 230-year anniversary. Yes, we have been a charity supporting blind and visually impaired people for 230 years! #NationalBrailleWeek #SightScotland #AccessibleFormats #SightLoss #BlindAndVisuallyImpaired #Communication [Image description: on a white background there is the Sight Scotland purple logo on the top left and a purple brand shape to the bottom right. •With White Cane Awareness Day approaching on October 15, 2023, We at Hearts for Sight feels it’s essential to celebrate and spread awareness throughout the whole month of October. •It is important to acknowledge the history of how White Cane Awareness Day came to be and the importance of the white cane as a tool for independence: •In 1930, after witnessing a blind man struggling to cross a busy street with a black cane, George A. Bonham, President of the Peoria Lions Club (Illinois), realized that there was a need for increased visibility. He introduced utilizing white canes with a red band to assist the blind and visually impaired in navigating their environments safely and independently. •In 1937, the Governor of Michigan approved laws to safeguard individuals using white canes while walking on Michigan streets. Now, every state in the United States has regulations that make it mandatory for drivers to give the right of way to people with white canes, even if they are not at a crosswalk. •On October 6, 1964, the U.S. Congress signed into law to authorize U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson to officially proclaim October 15 of every year White Cane Safety Day, also known as White Cane Awareness Day! Photo Description: In dark purple letters, the top left corner includes the Text “The History of White Cane Awareness Day.” Underneath it is the date of October 15, 2023. On the right side of the post, there is an image of an outline of a person in a walking position holding a white cane. The person is in the center of a lavender circle. On the bottom right corner of the page is the phrase “Empowering and acknowledging the blind and visually impaired community in dark purple letters. #WhiteCaneAwarenessDay2023 #October #WhiteCaneSafetyDay #BlindAndVisuallyImpaired #HeartsForSight #HistoryOfWhiteCaneAwarenessDay

This Summer - thanks to @aceagrams DYCP grant - was filled with research, reading and conversations with mentors and collaborators. Continuing my research into inclusivity and how to make dance more accessible for blind and visually impaired people, I’ve also explored emotional safety and consent practices in the studio as well as Kinesonic technology. More to come regarding the sharing some of my research soon! In the meantime, I’m very happy to have received funding from @leedsinspired and with the support of @yorkshiredancepictures @kalasangam_arts_centre @officialfeelgoodfactor @bid_services allowing us to offer regular workshops for Blind and Visually Impaired people this Autumn and Spring and sharing the joy and benefits of dance to more people! Embarking on an EPIC journey that defied limits! Imagine 12 incredible souls, visually impaired and blind but with spirits as wild as the rapids we conquered. Wayfinder's White River Rafting Visions Trip took us to Kernville, CA, where adventure roared louder than the rapids themselves! With the thrill of class 3 rapids as our soundtrack, we rode the waves to our riverside camp – talk about arriving in style! As the sun dipped below the horizon, our dinner was as delicious as the feeling of breaking barriers together. Under the twinkling stars, we swapped stories, dreams, and laughter that echoed through the night. Morning found us with riverfront breakfast and hearts bursting with excitement. Los Angeles awaited, but the real journey was etched in our hearts forever. We couldn't have conquered this without our rockstar partners, White Water Voyages – their support was the wind beneath our paddles! This trip wasn't just about rapids; it was about proving that limits are meant to be shattered. The visually impaired and blind showed the world that we can achieve the extraordinary. As we scroll through these memories, gratitude fills our hearts for every twist, turn, and splash that brought us closer. Cheers to the spirit of adventure, unbreakable bonds, and the magic that happens when we believe in each other! #RaftingVisions #UnleashTheAdventure #BoundlessPossibilities #WayfinderVisionTrip #BlindAndVisuallyImpaired #WhiteWaterVoyages

Last month, HFS held another White Cane Camping Trip–this time at Leo Carillo State Park in beautiful Malibu! We hiked on the scenic trails, had a beach day down by the water, and got to roast some marshmallows by the fire. Check out our favorite moments from the trip by swiping for more! Our White Cane Camping Trips are part of our Eco-Therapeutic Program. Hearts For Sight aims to provide greater accessibility to the outdoors for people with visual impairments through these programs. If you’re interested in being more present in nature, DM us about our next outing! PD: Slide 1–A four photo collage shows some snapshots from the camping trip. To the far left is a photo of a camper lying against a rock, facing the waves on the beach. The next photo to the right is of a camper setting up their tent. The next photo is of one of the dogs sitting on the sand. The last photo at the bottom is of an HFS participant smiling at the camera while she lays on her towel. The text on the bottom left says, “White Cane Camping Trip 2023, Leo Carillo State Park”. Top half of Slide 2–A candid group photo on the beach. This week I got the great honor and opportunity to come back to Heathers Camp as a counselor again! Something that as many of you know is very near and dear to my heart. For those of you who aren’t aware this is a camp for BVI ( Blind an visually impaired) people from the age of 8-18. Ran by the most amazing company and organization ever, Envision! (I HIGHLY recommend checking out them and their cause and supporting them, this is their 90th year of doing some really great things!) I got the great pleasure of being a counselor for the purple group. This week allowed me the honor of watching all 7 of these beautiful ladies grow in confidence and independence, and most importantly have fun. I enjoyed every moment of it, despite the 106* high this week. I cannot wait for next year! #heatherscamp #blindandvisuallyimpaired

here are five tips for writing good audio description: Be descriptive. The goal of audio description is to provide a detailed description of the visual elements of a video or other multimedia content. So, be sure to describe the setting, characters, actions, and any other visual information that is important to the understanding of the content. Be clear and concise. Audio descriptions should be clear and concise, so that they are easy for people with visual impairments to understand. Use simple language and avoid jargon or technical terms. Be consistent. Use the same terminology throughout your audio description, so that people can follow what is happening. For example, if you refer to a character as "the man" in one part of your audio description, you should refer to the same character as "the man" in all other parts of your audio description. Be timely. Audio descriptions should be timed to coincide with the visual elements of the content that they are describing. This means that you should start your audio description as soon as the visual element appears, and you should finish your audio description before the visual element disappears. Be aware of your audience. When writing audio description, it is important to be aware of your audience. For example, if you are writing audio description for a children's video, you will need to use simpler language and avoid complex concepts. Although July is coming to an end, disability pride doesn’t have to. Here is a deeper look into the symbolism behind the colors of the disability pride flag. This updated flag was designed in 2021 by Ann Magill along with other members in the disabled community. The old flag, also designed by Magill, had a zig-zag pattern that was updated to avoid visual disturbances for some people. -The red stripe symbolizes physical disabilities. -The gold stripe represents neurodivergence. -The white stripe represents invisible and undiagnosed disabilities. -The blue stripe represents psychiatric illnesses. -The green stripe represents sensory disabilities. -The black background represents the mourning and rage for those who have suffered or died from ableist violence. What does disability pride mean to you? Comment below! #HeartsForSight #DisabilityPrideMonth2023 #BreakingBarriers #VIPCommunity #BlindAndVisuallyImpaired #DisabilityPrideLosAngeles

July 26th marks the 33rd anniversary of the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act into federal law. The ADA is a federal law that prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities and grants equal opportunity in employment, public accommodations, transportation, government services, and telecommunications. The passing of the ADA came after years of struggle from disability rights activists across the country. In March 1990, disability rights activists held a week of demonstrations in Washington D.C. to gain support for the ADA. One of these demonstrations was the 1990 Capitol Crawl–sixty people crawled up the steps of the Capitol, leaving their wheelchairs and mobility aids below. In 1977, activists and protestors in San Francisco forcefully took up space for 25 days in the H.E.W. office, known as the 504 sit-in. Protestors pressured for the long-overdue implementation of Section 504 regulations that had been signed into law four years prior. Countless other efforts from activists across the nation highlighted the need to pass the ADA. It was signed into law four months later on July 26th, 1990. The passing of the ADA was a landmark win for the disabled community, yet there was still a long way to go. The ADA Amendments Act (ADAA) was signed into law in 2008, rejecting the Supreme Court decisions that had altered the original intent of the law. It also clarified the definition of “disability” and expanded the meaning of the term “major life activity”. People with disabilities are still struggling to be recognized and provided with reasonable accommodations in the workplace, businesses, public transportation, and more. This July, HFS thanks you for your support in allowing us to help create access to nature and community for people with blindness and visual impairment! PD: Disability rights activists protest outside the Capitol building in their wheelchairs at the 504 sit-in in San Francisco, 1977. The protestor in the front has a sign on the back of their wheelchair that says, “We Shall Overcome”. #HeartsForSight #AmericansWithDisabilitiesAct #Anniversary #DisabilityPrideMonth2023 #BreakingBarriers #VIPCommunity #BlindAndVisuallyImpaired
