Media blast from some recent #bouldering sessions at the Snowy Mountain Boulders in Indian Lake, New York. The rock formations in this area with their atypical pockets, huecos and steep terrain never cease to amaze me!!! It feels incredible to be getting back into the local bouldering scene. The improvements I have seen in my climbing and confidence these past two weeks have been unreal. I’ve recently completed some training on Natural Language Acquisition. This looks at how we process and acquire language with particular reference to autism. Many autistic learners (up to 80%!) are what is known as ‘Gestalt Language Processors’- This means that they store language in ‘chunks’; often phrases that appeal to them because of how they sound or that are from favourite TV programmes. Over time, a Gestalt Language Processor breaks these chunks down, attaching meaning to single words. Some children who process language in this way might not yet be speaking- They might make strings of interesting sounds or babble with lots of intonation. Using AAC such as a communication app can be a really useful way to support a gestalt language processor to develop their language… We have to look at the child’s individual needs and consider giving them lots of useful phrases that they could apply to different contexts. In the picture you can see VocoChat on Grid for iPad, set up with phrases. To make it meaningful for the child, a favourite play activity is being used. Try to use a range of phrases for different language functions (requesting, protesting, commenting, social language, etc). Model use of the phrases as the child plays e.g “Let’s do it again!” when the child makes more tea. Don’t be afraid of silence and pauses; give the child time to respond! How is it the end of April already (and more importantly... where is the sunshine??!!) This month has been a really busy one for me and I've loved working with so many different people. This month I have... 🌸Continued my EYFS improvement work in West London and will be working there in capacity as part-time maternity cover SENCO and Early Years lead for the next academic year. 🌸Held the first 'Prepare your child for school' course for parents and I will be looking at further dates for anyone who missed it. 🌸Started the role of Consortium Co-ordinator for a group of 18 schools in Birmingham, working on projects to support children's outcomes and provision. 🌸Met some wonderful children and their families at home and supported them with their child's Vision Impairment, ASD, ADHD and EHCP applications. 🌸Started working with Limitless Training Club to develop their Alternative Provision offer and ensure policies are all in place. 🌸Had my first return client, who needed further support with their home educated child. May and June are looking to be busy, so if you need support with your child please contact me for a free initial call. There is no obligation for any further work. I am also working on something very exciting in the background. This requires me to gain lots of technological skills (which is really not my forte!) and may take some time, but I promise you'll love it! I've waited for this. ✨ For Kittens to have just enough safety sense and instruction following skills to be able to let him be like every other 4 year old and run in the park, to walk to school, and for me not to be afraid of him being drawn immediately to the road or strangers.
