World ARC 2024-25 Update – French Polynesia: As Sofa So Good get ready to leave Bora Bora, they reflect on one of their highlights of visiting French Polynesia, which was playing golf in Mo’orea. Sharon Ee, of Sofa So Good says, “With a first-light tee time, we lugged our half sets of golf clubs from our ‘storeroom’ on the boat and set off to play 18 holes on the Jack Nicklaus designed “Green Pearl” golf course in Mo’orea. "The course unfolds between lush tropical foliage in the mountains and the breathtaking coast of the ocean. One advantage of a centre cockpit yacht is the private owner’s suite. A centre cockpit gives you a large owner’s cabin that is separate from the rest of the yacht, and thus more privacy when you have guests or crew on board. It may also provide the option of a deep cockpit locker or ensuite bathroom. The disadvantage is stern slap noise In harbour they suffer from wave slap, which is the noise caused by wavelets or wash running under the hull. With nowhere to dissipate the energy it slaps the hull with a thud. A centre cockpit layout puts your head above the source of the noise. At Sirius, we can fit aft cabins but we have two excellent and much nicer cabins on board already. The spacious forward suite is perfect in harbours and for coastal day-sailing, and the mid-cabin is ideal for offshore or ocean sailing with a large double berth, which does not narrow to the end, as low down and as close as possible to both the vertical and horizontal centres of gravity, making it the best possible sea berth. On all our models, both cabins can have either a direct entrance to en suite heads or one for each cabin. Both of these cabins are separated from the engine room and technical space, and they’re far from the stern slap noise at the aft end of the boat. Because we have these two cabins and another double tucked out of the way when lowering the saloon table, we have lowered the cockpit down and increased the height of the coamings. This makes the cockpit more comfortable and more sheltered, without the need for a windscreen or sprayhood. Without the whole concept designed around the aft cabins we can keep the aft quarters of the hull narrow, keeping the immersed hull shape more balanced, improving her windward performance and reducing the rolling motion as well as doing away with the need for twin rudders. World ARC 2024-25 Update – French Polynesia: With the weather causing a few concerns, there were just three boats for Group 2’s Leg 5 start departing from Bora Bora today. With blue skies and 16kts of wind from the south east, Kaja and Navillus 3 were first across the line, shortly followed by Nusquama. The boats are now on their 1,050 nautical mile sail to Niue. Abide, Bluemoona, Crazy Horse, Less Traveled, Serendipity IV and Sofa So Good have delayed departure from Bora Bora to Niue until Saturday. World ARC 2024-25 Update – French Polynesia: Before departing Bora Bora, the crew of Navillus 3 took to their bikes for a quick tour of the island. It wasn’t long before they found themselves on the beautiful Matira Beach. This popular mile-long stretch of white-sand beach is flanked by luxurious accommodation, laid-back beach bars, restaurants and shops. Frances Clifford from Navillus 3 has really enjoyed her time on the island. She says, “We’ve been blown away by French Polynesia and especially Bora Bora. How long do hull windows last? Our first Sirius 35 DS with these windows was launched in 2009; she still has the same windows today and they are still in excellent condition. We’ve yet to hear about any crazing, cracks or damage to the windows of a Sirius Yacht that have compromised their integrity or led to any needing to be replaced. It’s true, nothing lasts forever, we estimate the lifespan of a Sirius Yacht to be about 100 to 120 years, just like the windows on your home, there will be a time when the windows and/or the adhesive on your Sirius need replacing. We are serious when we say our windows are stronger than the hull around them. But strength isn’t the main thing that makes our hull windows special. It’s the view you get when you’re relaxing in the cabins. World ARC 2024-25 Update – French Polynesia: In a southeast wind that was gusting 20kts, the 10 boats in Group 1 departed Bora Bora today on Leg 5, bound for the small South Pacific island of Niue. It was one of the most picturesque leg starts we’ve had so far, with the striking mountainous backdrop of Bora Bora behind the fleet as they left on their 1,050-nautical mile sail. World ARC 2024-25 Update – French Polynesia: There’s been some fun had in Bora Bora over the last few days as the boats have been moving around and exploring the different bays. When Navillus 3 headed down to the Blue Lagoon to take a mooring, they offered a day trip to the crews from Dilema and Solaris. Jayne Ogilvie from Dilema said, “We just couldn’t believe how blue the water is. Just when we thought it was at its deepest blue, we saw another colour that would just surprise us. World ARC 2024-25 Update – French Polynesia: Sailing from Bora Bora to Niue and Tonga, the World ARC rally boats divide into two groups, primarily due to the limited mooring buoys available in Niue. The first group comprises Asante, Bahati, Corsair, Dilema, Fatjax, Madeleine, Promise 4, Pure Fun, Skyelark 2 and Solaris. Last night, as the sun set and a local Polynesian band played, the crews from these boats gathered at Bora Bora Yacht Club for a reception dinner. While it was an informal party, one presentation was made, which is the Pride of World ARC flag. This is given to a boat or person who goes the extra-nautical mile to be helpful and it was awarded to Ian Patience from Asante. Ian, who has many years' sailing experience, has continually assisted the rally boats with all sorts of queries, from maintenance and navigation to general sailing issues. On our yachts that are designed to dry out, the rudder has a wide foil on the tip to give a larger surface area for the rudder to rest on. When our twin-keel yachts dry out on concrete or any other hard surface, the rudder will be about 80mm (3in) off the ground and she will sit happily on her keels – we wanted to see how stable, so we had 12 guys jumping up and down on the stern and they were unable to get her to move. On softer surfaces, like sand and gravel, the keels sink in by about 2-5cm (1-2in). Our boats’ longitudinal centre of gravity is slightly aft of amidships, so the stern tends to sink in a bit further. The wide foil, or foot, at the tip of the rudder spreads the load and prevents the rudder blade from sinking in. The rudder has a Delrin sheave to transfer the weight onto the hull and it is designed to provide a stable tripod stand for the hull. The rudder is deliberately a little shorter than the keels for added safety – when you run aground while feeling your way into your perfect spot to dry out, the keels will touch the bottom before the rudder does. World ARC 2024-25 Update – French Polynesia: On the southwest coast of Huahine at Avea Bay there’s a large anchorage with varying depths of water and good holding, which is where many of the World ARC boats have enjoyed spending time. Huahine is a wonderful place to get immersed in the Polynesian culture. Some have hired scooters, which is a great way to see the island and visit the many archaeological and cultural sites, pottery and pearl farm and the notorious sacred blue-eyed eels. From Avea Bay there are some enjoyable walks across to the village of Parea as well as into the hills where the community have created a secret garden. We give you more living space than similar sized yachts, here’s how Because our deck saloons are a bit higher than most others, you get lots of useful extra living space beneath them. On many so-called deck saloon yachts, there isn’t enough headroom under the saloon so the space beneath it is effectively wasted. On a Sirius you can have a large midships cabin here, a workshop, an office or even a sauna! A true deck saloon has accommodation on two levels, increasing the typical floor space by 4-6㎡ (40-65sq ft), so you get a lot more interior for the length of boat. World ARC 2024-25 Update – French Polynesia: Mo’orea is proving to be quite a hit with the boats, not just for its spectacular mountain views and lush landscapes, but also as there’s so much to do. The World ARC rally participants are always able to sniff out a good tour, so it’s no surprise that the crews from Navillus 3, Wimsey and Sofa So Good found themselves visiting the Manutea Tahiti Rotui Juice Factory and Distillery! The sugarcane used to produce the Manutea Rum is grown mainly in Mo'orea's Opunohu Valley. The rum distilled is authentic and traditional, and includes white rum, dark rum and even vanilla-flavoured rum. Whichever wood you choose for the interior of your Sirius, we varnish by hand. We let our craftsmen use their skill and their eyes to decide when the wood used in the interior has enough varnish. Many companies use varnishing machines that spray thin layers of varnish onto the wood; often before the wood is assembled into the finished part. By applying vanish by hand we get a thicker, more hard-wearing finish on our wooden surfaced. By varnishing after units are assembled the wood is completely sealed and moisture has nowhere to enter the wood. Our bulkheads are varnished only once they have been laminated in the boat. This fully seals the wood, to ensure a tough finish for years to come. We wouldn’t recommend hitting Scandinavian rocks, but many owners have. So we like to make sure our keel structure is strong. The design of the keel is important but the way they are attached is just as important, if not more so. All of our fixed keels are through-bolted. Every keel has a wide flange at the root (top) of the keel and the flange sits into a reinforced recess in the hull. The flange and the recess work together to spread the loads of the keel/s into the yacht’s hull. The keels are bonded and bolted to the hull. We use a solent rig, and while we think it’s the best, it’s not perfect. Here’s why… One downside of the solent rig is that the inner forestay needs to be close to the outer forestay, which does make the flow of air over the luff of the inner sail a bit more turbulent. Moving the inner stay further aft (as in a traditional cutter rig) would make the size of the jib less practical, reducing it to the size of a storm jib. Also, if we were to bring the inner stay aft, the deck would need reinforcement, which would intrude into the large, open space of the forecabin. An internal brace would be needed in the middle of the berth to take the loads – not very practical. Moving the outer stay forward onto a bowsprit would increase the overall length of the boat, which might make your marina or harbourmaster happy as you’ll have to pay them more. Having the inner and outer forestays close together means that when tacking the genoa, it needs to be furled so it can pass between the two stays, then unfurled again afterwards. For cruising boats like ours that don’t get into competitive tacking duels very often, we feel it’s a small price to pay for the added versatility – especially if you have an electric winch or furling system. When you do find yourself tacking to windward you can make longer tacks or just use the self-tacking jib if furling and unfurling the genoa is too much hassle. World ARC 2024-25 Update – French Polynesia: Most of the fleet have now sailed south-west to the Society Islands, with Tahiti being their first port of call for boat supplies, provisions, pearls and parties! There have been a few sundowners enjoyed in Pape’ete as they’ve caught up with each other and swapped stories of places they’ve enjoyed and where to explore next. Sharon Ee from Sofa So Good says, “Sofa has been in Marina Taina for over a week, giving the boat a professional spa and polish. We’ve soaked in the island life with the incredibly warm, friendly and ever-helpful Tahitians. “We've enjoyed sundowners with our friends on Asante, Bahati, Corsair, Esperanza, Kaja, Madeleine, Nusquama and Wimsey and toured around Tahiti. A highlight was seeing The Wave at Teahupo’o, which is the setting for the surfing competitions in July for the Paris Olympics 2024. Many sailors still have an old-school view that large coachroof windows and through-hull windows on yachts are unsafe. There was some truth in that 30 years ago but materials and bonding technology have moved on since then. It may still be a valid concern for yachts that aren’t engineered for all-weather ocean cruising but the hull windows on a Sirius are literally bulletproof. Build quality, strength and safety are at the forefront of everything we do. The adhesive we use for our windows is the same as you’ll find in aeroplanes and helicopters. As good as a deck saloon is, we would not build this type of yacht if there were even the slightest concern about its strength or safety. Our deck saloon windows are made from toughened security glass. They are up to 10mm thick, bonded with an areospace-grade adhesive and through-bolted in aluminium frames with hundreds of 6mm bolts. The recess the windows sit in is a 25mm wide part of the GRP deck, and the inner aluminium frame overlaps by the same distance. The only way to break our windows is to use a sharp pointed hammer (like you find in buses and trains), but even then you’d struggle to break them.
