We enjoyed our visit to beautiful Biscayne National Park, some 95% of which is water. The park, located just south of Miami, protects beautiful aquamarine waters, emerald islands, and coral reefs. Evidence of 10,000 years of human history has been found in the park. We had booked a boat tour through the National Park Institute which leaves from the Deering Estate, the historic estate that once was the Florida home of Charles Deering, a successful businessman, art collector, and philanthropist. Manatees were playing right next to the boat as we were getting ready to leave. The Miami skyline was beautiful as we crossed Biscayne Bay to Key Biscayne and the 1825 Cape Florida Lighthouse, the oldest structure in Miami-Dade county. It stands at the tip of Key Biscayne in Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park, and guides mariners off the Florida Reef. The lighthouse was 65 feet tall when it was first constructed, but today’s lighthouse is 95 feet tall. It can be visited at certain times on certain days, with 109 steps to the top. We admired the lighthouse from the water and continued to our next destination, the Fowey Rocks Lighthouse, nicknamed “the eye of Miami.” We passed through what is left of colorful Stiltsville, a collection of shacks on stilts over the water dating back to the 1930s. Today, only seven structures remain but in its heyday in the 1960s, Stiltsville counted as many as 27 homes. Harsh conditions, hurricanes, and fires got the best of most of them. Stiltville is (in)famous for its stories of boozing, partying, and who knows what else. House #7 is home to the Miami Springs Power Boat Club. The 65-foot-tall Boca Chita Lighthouse on Boca Chita Key is an ornamental lighthouse used by Mark Honeywell (of the Honeywell corporation), the previous owner of the island, to signal his friends in Miami that the party was about to start. Today, many boaters dock in the small harbor and party on the island. We walked around the harbor, chatted to the rangers, and hung out at a gorgeous little beach. On our return to the Deering Estate we drove the 17 miles to the Dante Fascell Visitor Center. We got our passport stamp and walked the boardwalk.

Spring break 2024 in two parts. Part 1. We knocked 3 more national parks off the list. We started in the #evergladesnationalpark with a 15 mile bike ride where we saw gators everywhere-even babies! For #biscaynenationalpark🐠🐬 we took a boat ride out to #bocachitakey and went by #stiltsville on the way there. We loved this little island and the shell beach Last but not least - #drytortugasnationalpark was a 2+ hour boat ride out of key west. On this trip we learned Dramamine makes me VERY sleepy. I slept the entire way out and back! while on the island we explored #fortjefferson and the beaches.

3/2/24 Drove back up to Biscayne Nat’l Pk to take a boat ride out into the park (mostly water) to Boca Chita key…. Walked around and explored the beautiful shell beach, a short trail around the key and a barn that still stands. This key was owned by Mark Honeywell, who used it as a Party island with all his rich and famous friends, in the 1930’s. Today it remains one of most visited keys in the park, and the weekends are hopin’ still! We also learned the history of the area…Porgy’s Key purchased by, Israel Jones… His sons, King Arthur and Sir Lancelot the family Key line farm and the Sir Lancelot Jones story, about black farmer who inspired a US park. A great story this family has to tell… google it! 1-23-24 Made it out to Boca Chita Key. It's the northern most island of the upper Florida Keys. It has a lighthouse that was built by Mark Honeywell, who once owned the island, in the hopes he could use it to signal to his friends on the mainland to come out and party. The coast guard never allowed him to light it though because it would have been dangerous to other boaters. Fun day in Biscayne Nat'l Park yesterday, which included a boat tour. Spent a couple hours on Boca Chita Key. No hiking, so was a sit and stare at the water kinda beer! A Cold IPA by @big.oyster.brewery Pretty sure this one was sent to us by @porch.beers.usa. First thing we do when in Cincinnati is to hit @officialskylinechili So when Ang found out there was one down here....... Ended the day with a quick stop at @prisonpalsbrewco for a couple good beers! Allow me to shed some light on this location… Meet the MVP (Most Visible Phare) of Boca Chita Key – this adorable lighthouse! Scaling its spiral staircase is basically a cardio workout, but the view is so epic, you’ll forget you’re a stairmaster rookie. At the bottom, they even have a table so that you can collect a stamp in your National Park passport book. Scroll through these photos to see a video of the inside. Pro tip: if it’s locked when you visit, talk to the guides on your boat. Almost exactly a year ago me and this kid were travelling the northeast in the storm chaser bus and we snagged this boat in Connecticut with a blown motor , hooked it to the back of the bus and hit a storm in New Hampshire. This past tuesday morning he texted me “send me the address where youre at , i need to get away and clear my head” and 1000 miles later at 3am he walked in the door . So today we went about 20 miles offshore to #BocaChitaKey , hung out on the island awhile, and let the saltwater do its thing. I had planned on spending thanksgiving alone, but when you need your dad, you need your dad. So this thanksgiving is turning out to be one for the books!
