April 20th-28th is National Park Week. We’ve only been to 5 out of the official 63 U.S. National Parks. But did you know that there are a whopping 429 national park sites in the U.S.? 63 have the official “National Park” designation in their names, while the others fall into several categories including National Battlefields, National Historic Sites, National Monuments, National Seashores, and National Recreation Areas. My list of other national park sites that I’d like to visit is extensive 😅 my favorite so far has been Badlands National Park with Everglades National Park coming in a close second! Do you have a favorite National Park? #nationalparkweek #usnationalparks #badlandsnps #greatsmokymountainsnationalpark #evergladesnps #windcavenps #biscaynenps #explorenationalparks

You are never too old to play, never too old for joy. Go find what brings you joy and go play! I find joy in enjoying parks, learning from visitors' centers, and collecting stamps, stickers, and badges or patches. Go play animal bingo, do the word searches, read the information plaques, open the touch drawers & skulls. Do it to learn if you love learning, or do it to check the boxes if you love checking boxes, do it to earn the badges or patches if that makes you smile. Today was a smiley day for all of those reasons! #BiscayneNPS #BISCReefRanger #SistersSpringBreak

Biscayne National Park - 31 for me 😁 Unfortunately didn’t have much time to explore here between driving back from Key West (Dry Tortugas) to making the tram in Everglades NP. To ~really~ explore this park, you need at least a half day for a boat, kayaking or snorkeling tour since 95% of the park is water 🤯⛵️ However, if you’re short on time like me, there’s a cute trail along the water at the visitors center 🙌🏽 • • • • • #earthpix #roadtrip #findyourpark #nationalpark #landscapephotography #nationalparkgeek #optoutside #keepexploring #staywild #takeahike #hiking #girlswhohike #lonelyplanet #nationalparkspartnership #beautifuldestinations #wanderlust #travelphotography #florida #biscayne #biscaynenps #beachphotography #floridabeaches #nps #oceanphotography #oceanlover #biscaynepark #travelgram #nationalparkphotography #atlanticocean #oceanview

Is this mic on? Test 1, 2, 3.... This Saturday, March 16, marks the return of Biscayne's Story Slam, live story telling presented by the glow of a campfire. We are excited to hear from this year's featured storytellers who will be competing for prizes provided by Biscayne National Park Institute. (Sneak peek: there will be stories about bears, horses, donkeys, jellies, gorillas and more!) The event begins at 7pm but be sure to arrive early for a primo spot. Bring a folding chair or blanket and a picnic snack/dinner. We will also have telescopes, s'mores, and the grounds and visitor center will remain open until the event concludes. Wow!! You certainly rolled out the red carpet today for our 'Best Picture' Parkie nominees! Acceptance speech commencing: Thank you for sharing your images and their stories. Each picture gives us a deeper understanding of this amazing park and how visitors love and care for this treasured space. Thank you for sharing all of these special moments in time with us: from conservation education, to family time at the top of the light, from manatees to mangroves, Biscayne is an amazing place with 'Best Picture' opportunities everywhere! Though the votes and pictures are still rolling in (keep 'em coming!), we know you're tired (how's the springing ahead going??!) so we're going to announce this year's 'Best Picture' Parkie recipients as of this particular moment. It appears, from all of your likes and loves, that the Boca Chita Light was the REAL winner for this year's best picture, taking home the subject matter honors on both Instagram AND Facebook! On Instagram, @TheTravelingRanger posted a gorgeous image of Boca Chita Light that proved to be this year's favorite. And on Facebook, @DaciaPenlyJones posted a dreamy but different view of Boca Chita Light that narrowly beat out the competition. Congratulations to the winners! Enjoy the afterparty and tell Elton hello from us! And thank you to everybody else for participating in this year's Parkies! (PS: If you would like to submit any images to be considered for future use on our socials, tag us #biscaynenps or send along in a DM. It's all come down to this...the final category for 'Parkies: 2024': 'Best Picture'. But we're going to throw it back to you (the best audience ever!) to provide this year's nominees. We can't deny the fact that you like us. Right now, you like us! We invite you to share: THE BEST PICTURE (still photo) that *you* have taken while visiting Biscayne National Park. And feel free to give us some background on the image! Let your adoring fans and paparazzi know: What makes it a contender for best picture? Are you particularly pleased with the composition, the colors? Are you thrilled with the subject matter? Or does the photo have a special place in your heart/memory because of who you were with when you took the image? What makes *your* image a nominee for this year's 'Parkie'? Be sure to support each other! The image with the most likes and loves will be crowned this year's BEST PICTURE for Biscayne National Park! The winning image and corresponding photographer shout out will be posted later today. We've included one of our favorite images of as inspo. The hermit crab's little footprints is what makes this a favorite picture. (Fine print: Your nominee photo can have been taken at anytime but must be from within Biscayne's boundaries. No plagiarism: it must be *your* image. Only images posted today will be considered so if you've posted a good one in the past, go ahead and share again today. I discovered the most wonderful thing this morning! A part of Biscayne National Park is located along the coast just to the east of my new place in Miami. There is a beautiful long walking trail through the mangrove along a limestone jetty that ends in a breathtaking vista from which I can watch the sunrise. It's about 2.5mi from my house so I can even ride my bike. So many pelicans, cormorants, anhingas, herons, and terns... and I've never seen so many vultures in my life! Plus, there's no escaping the giant Cuban iguanas found everywhere down here - invasive but still pretty impressive to observe. 🦎 #sunrise #blackpointmarina #biscaynenationalpark #biscaynenps

1/13/24 — Day one of our Florida Keys trip started on the north end at Key Biscayne with our first visit to Biscayne National Park. The park protects the northernmost group of living coral reefs in the U.S. and their ecosystem. Its surface area is 270 square miles and since the park is 95% water, a boat excursion is the best way to explore. The timing didn’t work out for us to do that so we explored the exhibits at Dante Fascell Visitor Center and the boardwalk thru the mangrove-covered shoreline. Way in the distance we could barely make out the Miami skyline. #nps #biscaynenps @nationalparkservice @biscaynenps #floridakeys #schnyder25

Does Miami count as Latin America? Well, I’m adding it as a stop on my latest adventures! The highlight was going to Biscayne National Park and snorkeling the mangroves forests. A lovely boat ride to access a park 95% covered by water to reach the very top of the Florida keys, named before being formed on ancient reefs, unlike islands which are typically due to plate tectonics and volcanos. Swimming through these tree roots was a special treat as we saw many sea slugs, lobsters and a myriad of fish of all colors, shapes and sizes. There are over 600 species of fish inhabiting the park! The lighthouse is on Key Biscayne at a local beach park, where we wandered the shore and enjoyed lunch with a few raccoons trying to get a snack! Definitely reminded us that it was January with stormy weather and a strong breeze. Other highlights not pictured- checking out South beach at night and grabbing Cuban food at a local spot with live music. #latamtour #keybiscayne #biscaynenps #miami #southbeach

En route to the Everglades we made a stop at Biscayne National Park. Like so many of the national park system’s treasures, this beautiful spot wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for preservation-minded people. In this case it was the Jones family, who turned down multi-million dollar development offers for their property and instead sold it to the National Park Service. (For more on the fascinating history, check out this article: https://www.bbc.com/travel/article/20230618-sir-lancelot-jones-the-black-farmer-who-inspired-a-us-park) On a clear day you can see Miami in the distance—and easily imagine how different the view would be if it too had been developed rather than preserved. Today the park protects a diverse habitat, including a coral reef. The park is probably best experienced by tour boat or snorkeling/scuba diving. We didn’t have time for more than a stopover, but we enjoyed the incredible beauty of the crystal clear waters on a gorgeous Florida day. #biscayne #biscaynenationalpark #biscaynenps #coralreef #floridakeys #floridaparks @biscaynenps

This delicate biodiversity lies a few feet beneath the surface, a few miles of Key Biscayne, at Fowey Rocks Lighthouse. Coral reefs are under threat from Global Warming as water temperature rise produces 'bleaching', that makes them turn white. That does not mean that they are dead, but rather that they are under stress and more vulnerable to diseases and decay that could ultimately kill them. But as water temperatures come back to somewhat normal now in the winter, they will regain their color and beauty. That, if there are any coral left after all this carnage they are being put through by commercial and recreational boats operated by ignorant, unconscious or even maybe unscrupulous captains that have decided to ignore the NON ANCHOR zone designation. Please help us raise awareness. We have already notify the authorities and will continue to monitor and raise our voice to prevent more coral reef destruction. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection has installed and maintains multiple buoys to enable us all to enjoy this natural wonder with no harm to the vessels and most importantly, the habitat. Use them. And if they are all taken, go outside the designated NON ANCHOR zone (marked by yellow buoys) and wait for your turn. #biscaynebay #biscaynenps #friendsofbiscaynebay #sendit4thesea #fillabag #npr #NBC6

PLEASE SHARE, TO HELP PROTECT OUR REEF. We are so sad 😪, AND SO SO MAD 🤯. Last Saturday we sailed with some guests to snorkel the beautiful Fowey Rock reef. As usual, we looked for an open mooring buoy, as we know that within the YELLOW demarcation buoys there is NO ANCHORAGE ALLOWED -and even if for some stupid reason this was allowed, no one in its right mind should think it is OK to drop a pointy, sharp 20 lbs to 40 lbs (10 to 20 kg) chunk of metal into the coral bottom-. Well, unfortunately it so happens that there are plenty of captains that are not in their right mind around here. Just look at the pictures 😟 As indicated in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary Buoy Program (part of NOAA): "Anchoring on living coral within the sanctuary in waters less than 40 feet and when the bottom is visible is prohibited. If no mooring buoy is available and you are outside a no-anchor zone you may anchor in sand." Please help us raise awareness 🙏 #destinochartersmiami #biscaynebay #biscaynenps

We had the Biscayne National Park visitors center to ourselves today. I thought we were just going to make a quick stop and walk along the center trail but 2.5 hours later we were still hanging with Francisco the park ranger as he taught us about the formation of the coral reefs, how to tell the type of food an animal eats by their teeth, and how to "play" and conch shell for maximum sound projection. Biscayne has some amazing Volunteers in Parks! We'd like to share the #parkstory of one of them with you today! Karen began volunteering at Biscayne in 2016. She, and her pup Spirit, have wintered with us every season since then in their RV. Her impact here is nothing short of remarkable. She is a steadfast presence at the front desk, ensuring that park visitors have the resources they need for a successful visit. She manages our Junior Ranger program when she is onsite and has been instrumental in our beach cleanup program. As a retired school teacher, Karen's heart lies with assisting the park's environmental education program. She ignites passion and curiosity in each of the students who visit the park. Being that she has volunteered with the park for so long, she plays a significant role in ensuring the continuity of operations within the education program. Karen is a United States Air Force veteran, and we are honored that she continues to serve by supporting us here at Biscayne National Park. #BiscayneNPS #volunteers #NPS

The Shiva shell, adorned as the "Pacific cat's eye," emerges as an ethereal treasure. It bestows refuge upon the turban snail, shielding it from the perils of the deep as the operculum. With an ancient lineage intertwined with the Hindi God Shiva, the divine orchestrator of destruction and creation, the shell reflects the fiery gaze of his transcendent third eye. The swirling pattern mirrors the Fibonacci spiral, a testament to divine proportion, each curve embracing the golden ratio, an artistic hymn to harmony itself. What's a Stingrays favorite dance move? The “Stingray Shuffle!” Though stingrays are generally gentle and non-aggressive, accidental encounters can lead to unintentional stings from their venomous tail spines. To avoid this, try the Stingray shuffle! Slide your feet along the grassy or sandy sea floor, and the movement will encourage stingrays to move away, avoiding any unpleasant interactions. Last month, we got to run an artifact illustration workshop for Youth Diving With a Purpose junior archaeologists at Biscayne National Park! Pen-and-ink illustration might be an old-fashioned technique in a world of 3D scanning and LIDAR, but it's a great way to practice working on a grid before mapping in the field! This is especially critical for mapping shipwrecks, since time underwater is limited by the amount of air in an underwater archaeologist's SCUBA tank. Diving With A Purpose is a fantastic nonprofit dedicated to the conservation and protection of submerged heritage resources, with a particular focus on the protection, documentation, and interpretation of African slave trade shipwrecks and the maritime history and culture of African-Americans who formed a core of labor and expertise for America’s maritime enterprises. Hi! My name is Juliet! I’m an intern with the Greening Youth Foundation here at Biscayne National Park. In celebration of #LatinoConservationWeek, I would like to share my story and how this area of conservation has changed my story. For starters, I am of Peruvian-Cuban descent. Before I came into the picture, my parents did not have it easy in regard to starting a new life here in the United States. I was raised with a Spanish mindset and speaking fluently in Spanish and only Spanish. I was one of the only Spanish-speaking kids in my elementary school, which made learning hard. But it did not stop me from moving forward. I expanded my knowledge as far as I could reach and moved up the steps slowly. As a child, conservation wasn’t a priority, and it wasn’t even a thought. My family never really knew that the National Park Service existed or that such an amazing program existed. Not until Middle School, I was 12 years old, and my love for science and conservation began to bloom. This is due to an encounter with an amazing Park Ranger who introduced my family to such a sight. I continued my love for science with the dream of working at NASA, allowing me to go to high school at BioTECH, then transfer to the #COAST Academy at Cutler Bay Senior High. My love for science and conservation just kept growing, and I keep finding new things to learn about. To me, being of Latino descent, I can teach others of the wonders found at our backyards and spark some young minds both in English and Spanish now. Coming back to Biscayne National Park and my internship here. I get the chance to actually talk to people in both languages and get to see their interest spark. Everyone should be able to have an understanding of what’s in their backyard and what they can do to help conserve what is being lost. Regardless of the obstacle, we must strive to understand and learn what is in our backyard, for that is someone’s home, and we must help protect it. #biscaynenps #latino

Sometimes, the weather just doesn't cooperate! Ha ha! Even the most carefully planned trips can take a detour when the forces of nature intervene. We've had quite a few of those detours over the years! 😊 On our last day in Rocky Mountain, the cloud cover in the drive up to the Alpine Visitor Center was so dense, we couldn't see ANY of the amazing views! Thankfully, we saw them the day before. 😊 In Shenandoah, the fog obscured the distant views, but made for some lovely photos of the trees. In Alaska, the grey, cloudy skies meant we never saw Denali Peak or the turquoise waters of Kenai Fjords. In Mount Rainier, the famous mountain stayed hidden. In Biscayne, a recent hurricane flooded the boardwalk trails. Even in Gettysburg, it poured rain on our last day. But it didn't stop me from seeing the Lincoln Address Memorial. I was alone in that cemetery and completely drenched when I got back to the car...but it was worth it. I admit, sometimes these detours are a little disappointing as they prevent us from seeing what we set out to see. More often, they set us in a direction we didn't expect and always create wonderful memories. Beauty is beauty. The next day we stopped by Biscayne National Park to spend some time on the water. It didn’t go quite as expected but it did clear up and we saw some manatees so that was cool! #Biscayne #OutdoorDetour #TakeTheScenicRoute . . . . . . . . . . #biscaynenationalpark #biscaynenps #nationalparkgeek #nationalpark #nationalparkservice #nationalparksusa #kayaking #kayaklife #manatees #manatee #floridawild #floridawildlfe #oceanwildlife #seakayaking #seakayak #findyourpark

The Boca Chita Lighthouse on Boca Chita Key in Biscayne National Park. This “lighthouse” wasn’t functional and didn’t have an actual light. It was used as a visual marker for Mark Honeywells guest to know where the party was when leaving Miami. #BiscayneNPS #Biscayne #BocaChitaKey #Lighthouse #Homestead #Florida #BiscayneBay

#NationalParkThursday 🏝 Biscayne National Park This national park in south Florida is 95% underwater! It protects 4 different ecosystems: mangrove swamps, Biscayne Bay, coral keys, and Florida reef. We took a snorkeling tour and snorkeled along the mangroves near the shore and around a sunken barge. We saw all kinds of fish, starfish, and a sea turtle. From the safety of our boat, we even saw a glimpse of a shark hunting in the distance! 1.31.2023 #florida #LoveFL #nps #FindYourPark #biscaynenps

So... I found out the hard way that my waterproof bags no longer work both for my book and for my phone. As a result, I didn't get to capture the true essence of this park considering that most of it is underwater. Snorkeling is a must if you find yourself venturing out to this beautiful area. If you go during the summer months you can even see the ship wrecks or explore part of the reef. . . . . . . . . . . #optoutside #getoutside #enjoynature #nature #findyourpark #nationalparks #nps #adventureisoutthere #nationalparkgeek #adventuretime #travel #hiking #travelyoung #naturephotography #travelphotography #adventure #hikingadventure #hikingaddict #hike #booklover #drseuss #ohtheplacesyoullgo #ohtheplacesivebeen #ohtheplacesivetraveled #biscaynebay #biscaynenationalpark #biscayne #ocean #snorkeling #biscaynenps
