A great day for a hike at Cowles Bog Trail. This is a 4.7 mile trail with 202 feet of elevation gain. Cowles Bog is named for the scientist Henry Chandler Cowles from the University of Chicago, the father of plant ecology. His work here led efforts to preserve the Indiana Dunes. Since Hamilton Grange National Memorial in the Harlem neighborhood of Upper Manhattan, #NewYork was established today in 1962, I thought Iโd share a few photos and its history. In the late 1700s, Alexander Hamilton and his wife, Elizabeth Schuyler, purchased property in Harlem Heights to establish a summer estate away from the city and yellow fever outbreaks, which were common during the summer periods. The Grange was finished by 1802 and the estate grew to roughly 32 acres, both of which brought considerable debt to Hamilton. The Federal-style Grange was designed by architect John McComb Jr., who also designed New York City Hall. This is the only house that Alexander Hamilton ever owned. Hamilton only enjoyed the house for two years. He died July 12, 1804 a day after being wounded during a duel with political rival Aaron Burr, in what is now Weehawken, #NewJersey. His wife, Elizabeth, continued to live at the Grange until 1833, when she moved to Washington, D.C. In 1889, #NewYorkCity began building the grid system of streets. The Grange would have been in the way of W. 143rd Street and torn down. St. Lukeโs Church bought The Grange and moved it two blocks away to Convent Avenue. The church and an apartment building were later built next to the original front and back entrances to the Grange, resulting in the loss of its porches and a reconfiguration of the homeโs main entrance. The Grange was designated a National Historic Landmark in December 1960. It's #NationalParkWeek and today we're sharing a park where we've had some incredible, unique experiences! ๐New River Gorge National Park (West Virginia) On our first day at New River Gorge, we took the Bridge Walk tour that crosses the New River Bridge on a catwalk under the highway. The bridge itself is over 3,000 feet in length and 876 feet above the river. The catwalk is 24 inches wide and has railings on either side. In addition, you are strapped in with a harness. Our guide shared many interesting facts about the history of the bridge during the trip across. On our second day at New River Gorge, we went on a full-day white water rafting trip. This was especially cool because we rafted under the same bridge we walked across the day before. We also selected a rafting trip with Class V rapids, so it was a thrilling ride. Yellowstone! . Happy National Parks Week! Yellowstone National Park is the worldโs first national park, established in 1872, and is larger than Rhode Island and Delaware combined! It has the largest concentration of mammals in the lower 48 states (67 different mammals), and is the only place in the U.S. where bison have lived continuously since prehistoric times. It is situated over a super volcano and is home to half the worldโs hydrothermal features. Can you tell I love this place?! Itโs hard to pick favorites among our great national parks, but Yellowstone is up there for me. I was so blown away when I first visited this park as a kid that I wrote a huge research paper on it for school (yeah, Iโm that nerdy) and thought about being a Park Ranger. Fantastic shots! : : #NationalParkGeek : : In Canyon De Chelly, Bullhead City, Arizona you are on Hualapai and Pipa Aha Macav (Mojave) land. : Itโs remarkable how the supply of photo subjects never seems to run dry in the Southwest United States. After years of shooting, this month I made my first visit to Kodachrome Basin State Park (still editing those pics), and it wasnโt until two years ago that my Spring Break expedition took me through Canyon de Chelly in Northern Arizona. Since I was only passing through on my way to Monument Valley, I concentrated my attention on Spider Rock, deep into the eastern end of the canyon. As I understand it, you can only see this formation from the southern viewpoint, since you have to have a trail guide to go into the canyon, and the guided tours donโt go far enough to reach the rock. Iโve struggled with anxiety as a result of good things happening to me. โI better not let things get too good. As Iโve gotten older, though, Iโve shifted away from this mindset of unworthiness and into a mindset of grateful receiving. And my world has changed as a result.
