This week at #caltonpoint19acres Turkeys are still broody. I miss them being sweet and snuggly. When they do come out of the box it’s hit or miss on their moods. Dee is usually still my sweet girl, but Artemis goes on a rampage. She wants nothing to do with anyone and if anyone gets in her way, she will go wild. My poor chickens are getting the brunt of it. Dolly took her security job to the next level by getting skunked at 5:30am. Not the way I wanted to wake up on a Saturday morning. She was quite proud of herself when she jumped on our bed to let us know what she did. This photo was after her 6am bath. She was not happy with me. We FINALLY got some playtime done. Herbs, shishito peppers and Japanese egg plant. We also got our radish seeds in. Our avocado, lemon and peach trees are going wild! And our cotton candy tree is in full bloom. Do we ever question letting the heritage birds free range? 🤔🤣 These birds are the epitome of "curiosity killed the cat". They get into everything. If a door is open, they will enter. If the dogs are barking, they will run to the dogs. If someone stops by, they are investigating. If there is something new, they will do a full inspection and poo marking. Broad breasted turkeys are too big to fly but these heritage birds have been on the roof of every building. I have to confess that I just love turkeys!🦃💕 This year, we are adding some new heritage breeds to our Bourbon Reds. Standard Bronze and Narragansett will be fun additions. We choose the heritage breeds because, for some, they are rare and endangered. Plus, they can breed naturally, so this provides meat on our table. Sadly, we lost our beautiful tom this year. He was a great big Blue Slate, but we have a hen that is sitting on some eggs, and maybe....just maybe we will get some offspring from our loveable boy that we miss so much!! Lucky is Working that snood for #turkeysnoodsunday with @5rfarmoregon and friends! 🦃 If you remember from last year, I had to help Lucky out of his shell- my first help-out ever! Compared to his brothers, he was very late to develop and it wasn’t until he started to do the full tail fan that I was certain he was a tom. He still has a few issues- I can tell his respiratory system isn’t perfect (turkeys are known to have problems there) and he can’t puff up as big as his brother Pongo, but he’s actually taller than Pongo and no one bullies him. (Whereas Pongo is always getting it from both Tavi and Belve!) Pure love! Our sweet sweet Mama Mia delivered 8 amazing, healthy, strong puppies yesterday. All moms are amazing, but witnessing the miracle of life happen is always the best part of being a farmer. Getting to see Mia deliver her pups with ease, taking care of her new pups, and delivering more all at the same time has me in awe of her.
