The results of my first turkey hatch were quite disappointing to say the least. I had 10 good eggs on Wednesday. I locked them down on Thursday. Three hatched on Friday, overnight into Saturday, and the rest all died. One egg was completely unzipped, but the baby never came out. One was pipped, and the rest didn't even try. All were fully developed. Just some sourdough bread.. the recipe 325g water 100g mix together well add 475g unbleached flour and 10g salt. Let hydrate for 30 mins then stretch and fold 3 times each 30 mins apart. Cover and Let bulk ferment 4-12 hours depending on your temperature. Shape dough and place in your floured bread basket and cover place in fridge for 12-36 hours. Preheat oven and Dutch oven to 500. Bake 25 mins with lid on, remove lid and lower temp to 450 bake another 25 mins. Remove and let cool then ENJOY! #sourdough #ohiohomestead #homesteading #baking #breadmaking

Reeves Farm story time…1. “Sloopy 2”, a Buckeye hen, bearing the dubious distinction of bottom of the pecking order…a little patch on her head continues to grow as her coop mates do what hens do. I’m pretty sure it will pass when the young’uns join the flock in a few months. 2. A mama killdeer laid her four eggs in the middle of our garden where we have been dumping the coals and ash from the wood stove all winter. Let’s talk about Turmeric for your flock(s)! Adding turmeric to your flock’s feed is incredibly beneficial for your birds’ overall health. Turmeric produces a specific bioactive compound called curcumin, a polyphenolic phytochemical with anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancerous and antioxidant properties. A couple other highlights … ✨The National Institute of Health suggests that adding turmeric as a dietary supplement can increase resistance to avian necrotic enteritis. ✨ A 2015 study showed turmeric was beneficial against Ascaridia galli, a common intestinal nematode (roundworm). ✨ Its benefits have been reported to act as a replacement for antibiotic use. ✨ When supplemented in the diet of ducklings, it was found to reverse the aflatoxin-induced liver damage. ✨ Turmeric sprinkled on chopped grapes can help as an anti-inflammatory treatment. How to use: Simply sprinkle it on top of your birds feed. The general consensus for turmeric use is 1 teaspoon for every 10 pounds of body weight. -Or- You can make a paste from turmeric by melting some coconut oil and adding black pepper and turmeric to it. Who needs CrossFit and gym memberships when you can move bags of feed? We picked up the first load of feed in preparation for the broilers (meat chicken). 59 bags at 50 lbs each…that’s a pretty good workout! Spring has brought these maples to life. When we moved to our homestead property, we wanted to bring something from our old home with us. Instead of mowing down all of the seedlings 🌱, I transplanted a few and brought them with us. The first winter, they were still in pots, and the dog tore them up. I transplanted them the following Spring, but the deer ate them back. The same thing happened the nest Spring as well. Last year, I moved them closer to the house, and so far, the deer have left them alone. Wine cap mushrooms are in season so it is time for experimenting. This wine cap was filled with egg, sauteed leeks, wine cap, bread Crumbs, and Montreal steak seasoning. The wine cap was sprinkled with some nutritional yeast, filled and then topped with aged cheddar and homemade salsa. Cooking wise I roasted the filled wine cap on broil for 10 min added the cheese and broiled to melt then threw on some salsa. This is a typical way I use the big portobello caps but it worked great with my home grown wine caps I can't wait to try this with pesto or like a pizza. Savor the seasons. :)

Saving money and reducing waste is essential these days. Last year, we planted 160 tomato plants and used A BUNCH of jute twine. This year, I used a spare electrical cord reel and wound up the baling twine left over from the hay rounds we fed to the animals.
