Nothing like putting on a cozy pair of pjs & reading a cute little book about murder ๐ฅฐ๐๐๐โจ (๐๐ช) I finally finished the book! It was a โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธ/5 read for me! Overall I think this was a good book with great characters and an intriguing plot! ๐ฉท๐ค The book was definitely different & interesting butttt it somehow didnโt fully catch my attention and I found myself often times putting it down ๐. It was also funny but not as funny as Iโve heard others describe it, at least in my opinion lol. If youโre thinking about reading it, I say give it a shot! 'Sovereign' by C.J. Sansom โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธ Sansom's done it again! Another brilliant piece of historical fiction, embedding mystery and mayhem, plotting and puzzle solving into the rich historical background of the Tudors (this time the Pilgrimage of Grace and the fall of Catherine Howard). The court intrigue, the politics, the mysteries, the betrayal, the grief, all are written well and come across powerfully. I absolutely love how Sansom portrays Henry VIII, he'd be turning in his grave and that's how it should be. So many twists and turns in this one. I can never fully solve Sansom's puzzles, sometimes I het halfway there, other times I am way off base. Everyone is a suspect, all the time, you feel the worry, the suspicion Shardlake feels towards everyone as he struggles to piece everything together, while having to deal with past enemies, current insults and pompous lords. Truly, the depth of Sansom's research is apparent in the realistic setting he builds up, the way he portrays the north/south animosity, the descriptions of old England, the politics, the judgements, expectations and beliefs. Although he writes dramatic mysteries, sometimes based solely on rumours or falsities, he manages to do it in a way that does not, ultimately, disrupt the historical course of things. Henry remains king, Howard falls, the conspiracy crushed. It's so well done. The only negative is that they can drag out a bit. It takes a second to get into the book and often when progress is made another issue arises pushing them back. However, it's still a thoroughly enjoyable book and I look forward to the next. The Tea Dragon Festival & The Tea Dragon Tapestry โจโจโจโจโจ๐ณ๏ธโ๐ X2 I keep reading series back to back before posting and reviews and it seems excessive to post five individual reviews in a day ๐ ANYWAYS I literally love this series. The coziest and most adorable graphic novels. My (almost 4 year old) son was sitting next to me and looking at the pictures while I was reading and it made me want to buy all three just to have on hand for him and my daughter. There were a few moments that made me emotional. I don't know what it is about these that make me emotional, but I did take a couple pictures of some of the pages that hit me the most. Book Review - - - No Spoilers --- Title - No One Saw a Thing Author - Andrea Mara Rating - 4โญ Read for #acrossthepondbookclub Summary - No one saw it happen. Your two little girls jump on the train ahead of you. As you try to join them, the doors slide shut and the train moves away, leaving you behind. Everyone is lying. It's only when you reach the next stop that you truly begin to panic. Because there aren't two children waiting for you on the platform. There's only one. Someone is to blame. Has your other daughter got lost? Been taken by a passing stranger? Or perhaps the culprit is closer to home than you think? Review - This was the April pick for our book club and is from one of my favourite genres. This book's story gripped me from the start and I think I read the entire book in two sittings. Typically when a book has this many characters some of them can get lost in the story but I think that Mara was able to flesh them all out with their own (often selfish) motivations which allowed for a wide group of possible suspects. While they were all distinct and intriguing in their own way I will say that I disliked the majority of them. Although I do think this was the point and there were a couple who I liked. Overall, I really enjoyed this story and the way Mara built tension was quite good. It's a very quick and easy read so if you are interested in a thriller that you can fly through I'd add this to your tbr. The "Amber Coast" as it is known. "The Eastern Baltic languages - Old Prussian, Latvian and especially Lithuanian - are the closest living relatives of Proto-Indo-European..." Johnson discusses the World Tree, the Latvian sky god Dievs, Peckols the God of the Underworld and Darkness, and Perkลซnas of thunder and lightning, Potrimpo of seas, earth and grain. What's more, the Baltic region stressed, probably more than any other in Europe, about the importance of trees. "Trees were something quite special..." with men being reincarnated as oaks, birches and ash and women as linden and spruce. Then of course there is Saulรฉ, who is the solar goddess, queen of the folk song tradition and the spirit of rebirth. Many others are included - I'm particularly fond of the shapeshifting Ragana - and Baltic folk tales as well. As interesting as this was, I couldn't help but feel like more could've been included. There is minimal transition between the gods, goddesses and their tales so it comes off as disjointed in the first half. Johnson often assumes too much of the reader as well, so I recommend being familiar with early Baltic history first before reading. These absolutely influence any mythology or folk practices, and here they go unexplored. Johnson also makes broad generalizations without providing any conclusive evidence, especially when trying to tie-in the Maya, Native American or Hindu rituals. This can lead to fundamental misunderstandings of other cultures. I feel like the chapters on seasonal festivals, if presented first, could've assisted in providing needed context. Although I do commend Johnson for his attempt at creating an accurate Baltic zodiac! Dragons๐ฒ๐ Honestly some of my favourite creatures to read about, especially when they have their own personalities and are a character themselves not just a prop๐ฒ They are just so huge and majestic and bring so much more madness to a story. My favourite dragons are probably from The Echoes Saga, because they are bonded with Dragorn and you get such fun personalities and conversations and I love when human problems are just such trivial matter to them. I also loved the Dragons in Realm of the Elderlings. They also have such huge personalities and bond with certain people and Tintaglia is honestly the best. The way she thinks humans should just do her bidding is so entertaining. I would 100% be down with riding around on her and doing her bidding just for the commentary. I need to get better at my #whatthisweek I just forget to take photos ๐คฃ I had a really nice week this week๐ซถ๐ฝ I was busy at work, finished reading the knockemout series, finally got around to redoing my nails after putting it off, cleaned my makeup brushes which is one of those jobs I never want to do but am so happy afterwards๐คฃ, had a takeaway & went to the cinema with my boyfriend to watch challengers (wasnโt a fan unfortunately) and was forced to watch arsenal today but we won so happy days๐คฃ ๐ What Iโm reading: I finished โThings weโve left behindโ which I loved!
