The vast majority of the time, clamping and cutting the umbilical cord is not an emergency. ✨ After the baby is born, blood is still retuning to the baby until the placenta comes off of the wall of the uterus. Research shows that even 30 seconds of “allowing” the blood to return to the baby improves oxygenation and reduces risks for anemia later. ✨ After a little while, the cord becomes limp and the placenta comes out of the body, usually preceded by a couple of period like cramps. We often gently help it come out. ✨ After that, we put it in a bowl, tucked next to the baby and still attached, and we get around to cutting the cord when we all want to. Often this is after the family has had time to oooooo and ahhhhh at their baby and laugh (and cry) and bond. ✨ Here you see us getting around to cutting the cord about an hour after birth. I’m always super careful about what i share from my births. It’s weird and sensitive to me because birth is INCREDIBLY emotional for everyone involved. Some go beautifully. Some go terribly. Some happen q-u-i-c-k Others happen Ssssllllloooowwwwwlllyyyyyy Some go to plan MOST don’t. But birth stories are all a miracle and worthy to be told. Mine took me weeks to remember and process. Jacks was amazing- it was almost pitch black in the birth space but we managed to get some gorgeous images of him in his first precious moments on this earth snuggled in with mama and getting checked out ❤️❤️❤️ I came into his birth while he was crowning- he was in a rush to arrive- but mama did amazingly. It was a honor to capture this moment in their family story. Pregnant mamas- Sorry friends, i am holding off on births for now- at least til my own baby is sleeping through the night and weaned!!! Thank you so much to our Bubba Bump family for sending us your words and your photographs! *** 2 C-sections 2 beautiful boys 2 completely different births My first born Cooper was an emergency C section after 2 days of labour. I was in & out of it due to the level of pain. I remember the moment the spinal block worked - I had so much relief and just focused on getting my little boy here safe. It was so amazing & overwhelming seeing his tiny body lifted up over the curtain, I can't describe the moment of becoming a mum for the first time; it was surreal. My second boy Ollie was scheduled & it was the most amazing & calm experience meeting him. For me it was so different the second time because I was so alert and aware. I felt like the first time I was so exhausted from the whole process. But either way I would do it all again. Thank you so much to our Bubba Bump family for sending us your words and your photographs! *** I wanted to share some of my story, from when I had to have my little one 8 weeks premi due to being diagnosed with cervical cancer at my 20 week ultrasound. Had to start chemo while pregnant, which was terrifying. I have never felt so strong and fierce in my life as fighting to keep my little man alive while going through cancer treatment. I started chemo at 23 weeks, did 3 rounds of chemo and then had a planned Caesarian at 32 weeks. Harry spent 3 weeks in hospital between the NICU and special care nursery, and at 4 weeks post partum I started back on chemo in conjunction with radiation. Truly traumatic, but slowly moving forward with life !! I’m an ambassador now for a local cancer charity so am more than happy to share with others and connect. This month, we are sharing our community's stories - and in the spirit of sharing, some can be traumatic. If you want to talk about your birth, please reach out to @pandanational *** I’m sharing my story because all birth experiences are valid, even if they aren’t what you hoped & you’re still a work in progress growing through it. My medical history left me with an abundance of trauma, mistrust & no idea I could advocate for myself, meaning I felt pressured into an elective c-section from the start of my pregnancy. I never met a midwife as part of my care and my OB never discussed how a vaginal birth might look for me. The c-section was routine, but left me traumatised & broken. My perfectly healthy baby was wrapped in a blanket before being given to me, then was quickly taken to be weighed & measured before I got him back. No skin to skin or first latch -thankfully my partner pushed in recovery so that I could. After lengthy infertility & IVF trauma followed by a lonely lockdown pregnancy, it was a huge thing I felt was taken out of my hands. 2 years on, I have begun to process & heal. It has taught me a lot. I won’t let other people take control again. I have the strength & understanding to stand up and advocate for myself and my son now. I have an unshakeable understanding of who I am as a parent & what is best for my son. The complete lack of control pushed me to do better. I hope I can make peace with our birth story, but for now I’m making our present & future the best they can possibly be, while I do the work on healing myself. I hope if you are in the depths of the pain of your experience, you know you are not alone and your feelings are so valid. Birthing people deserve to be listened to throughout their journey & be supported to achieve the outcomes they hope for, with space held for their experiences afterwards, no matter how they may look. You can never understand someone else’s experiences, but you can just be there to hear their story & hold that space for them. I am so grateful to have my son and my thanks goes to everyone who helped, I just wish there had been 1 person on our side asking what it was I really wanted. @leggyblondebird

It’s true what they say about the toast in hospital after labour, it’s blooming delicious. Olive is 6 hours old in this pic, it was 10pm we were discharged just moments after and I was at home in my own bed with my newborn baby by midnight that night. It still bothers me that I’m holding her head in this picture because it was only about a week after she was born that I was told by a midwife (after seeing 5 in between who all watched me feed) that you shouldn’t hold their head when feeding because they need to be able to move their head to breathe & pull away, and that it is actually the neck you support. #postpartum #newbornbaby #toast #labour #birth #hoursold #brandnewbaby #hospital #labourward #recovery #goldenhour #breastfeeding #discharged #newborn #mum #motherandbaby #portrait #postbirth #birth
