Beekeeping jobs for May, the season is now getting going, even if a bit slowly. 🐝You should now be working to 7 day inspections, stretching to 10 if your queens are clipped. 🐝 The bees will be building our of May, make sure you give them space once the frames in each box are 3/4 covered add another super. Compression swarming is a key risk. 🐝Keep an eye out for those queen cells - they are very easy to miss and then half your colony can off down the road. Another important nectar source in the spring for pollinators is the Ox Eye Daisy (Leucanthemum vulgare) this clump is slowly naturalised in our wild flower meadow The genus name, Leucanthemum is actually from the Greek word, leukos meaning white, and anthemon meaning flower and resembling the Ox's eye. So, it is called Oxeye daisy. In Norman times it was also called Marguerite which means flower in old French. The word comes from the petal-pulling game "he loves me, he doesn't love me" or "effeuiller La Marguerite" in French. In fact so, enamoured with the flower, Oscar Wilde wrote a poem about them… O happy field! and O thrice happy tree! This bee hive has a removable lid, so that the bee can sleep snuggly inside. Our 6.5cm peg fits beautifully inside, then the lid can be put back on to close the hive and create a bee den! This beehive features some exquisite wood grain! It can be left plain to show the wood grain, or can be painted in the theme of our other two new bee hives, that we will share tomorrow! To make that one pound of honey, one bee has to fly about 90,000 miles – the equivalent of three times around the globe! . Those facts alone highlight how amazing these little insects are. So let's lend them our support. Throughout the day we will be posting lots of bee facts, alongside our invitations to play and learn for our children.
