We made use of some of the time with the delay to our season due to old weather by melting down some old comb. We put it all into a large steamer, pump in the steam and it all melts down. Jobs for April. The beekeeping season is now really starting to get going. Temperatures are rising, bees are flying and the range of forage is increasing. 🐝By April regular inspections should begin. By the end of the month we will see swarms so it good to get on top of what the colonies are doing. 🐝The queen should be laying to build up the brood nest. If the colony still has lots of stores in the brood box consider swapping for empty frames so there is space for the queen to lay eggs. 🐝Queen excluders should added back to the hives and the first supers added once the bees are over 8/9 frames. Make sure they have lots of space to expand. 🐝If your comb is looking old plan on how to exchange it. This colony was rescued from a tree which had been cut down and chopped in half. The comb extended about 5 feet! The bees weren't happy after their home had been felled, chopped in two and then left for a few nights in the cold - this wasn't a job for the faint hearted. There were lots of bees especially considering it is still mid March. We carefully lifted the comb and placed it into frames held by elastic bands, waited for the remaining bees to join them and then relocated to a quarantine apiary. #bee #honeybee #wildbee #beerescue #beekeeper #beekeepinglife #beekeeping #thehoneybeeacademy #newbee #novicebeekeeper

Beekeeping jobs for March: 🐝Whilst there may be warm days it is really important to stay patient - inspecting colonies early in the year is much more for the benefit of the beekeeper than the bees. There is very little you can do to correct problems or errors at this time of year. 🐝There are increasing sources of forage available however, March is a peak month for colony starvation. If your colony feels light keep up with the feed. However, if the colony has good weight there is no need to over feed. It is important that the queen has space to lay. 🐝I had good intentions of getting all my new kit built up ready for the spring. Most of it is still in a pile in the shed. Hopefully in the next week..... 🐝By the end of the month you can remove the protection from pest, mouse guards and woodpecker protection. Mouse guards inparticular will start to get in the way of incoming pollen. 🐝If the weather is good by the end of the month it may be possible to have a quick peak in the hive to see how they are doing. Go carefully and don't spend ages looking. Squishing the queen now woudl be a disaster. Beekeeping jobs for February. 🐝Stay patient. Often more harm will be done than good by opening up the bees at this time of year. Unless you really need to try and hold off opening the bees until the end of next month once the temperatures pick up. 🐝Check the hive weights. Starvation is a key risk at the moment - if the hives seem light place some fondant over the holes in the crownboard. 🐝Make sure entrances are clear. Whilst normally the bees do a great job of clearing out the dead bees, sometimes a build of natural winter deaths can cause the entrance to be blocked. Use your hive tool to make sure it is clear! 🐝If you find any hives which have died out, make sure you either remove the hive or you seal up the entrances. Colonies will be seeking out food, so disease can easily be spread by robbing empty hives. 🐝Build new hives parts and start to build frames for spring. In particular plan for any bailey comb exchanges to replace old comb with new. Jobs for December. December is quiet month for beekeepers - generally you can do more harm than good disturbing the bees at this time of year. 🐝 A cold snap is a good time to do your winter varroa treatments. When the colony is broodless no varroa can be hidden away in the cells so a quick treatment can kill them all off. Common approaches are to apply an Oxalic Acid Trickle or Vaporisation. Make sure you use approved medicines and the appropriate PPE. 🐝 It has been fairly warm this autumn/winter so far so bees are using up their stores in many places. Tips for our #newbees for November! : 🐝 Don't open the hive unless you have to. The temperatures are dropping and the bees will have sealed all the gaps with propolis. We try to avoid opening the hives until around March other than for emergencies and the winter varroa treatment. 🐝 When you inspect make sure there aren't any gaps when you close up the hive that could cause leaks and drafts. 🐝 The temperatures have started to get a bit too low for syrup feeding, we have placed a block of fondant over each crown board in case of emergencies. 🐝 It is too late to add mouse guards and chicken wire to protect from mice and wood peckers if these are a problem in your area. 🐝 We are now looking to next year and planning our equipment needs. You can save a lot of money by buying the equipment for next year in the winter sales. You can also then spend the winter building up the boxes. 🐝 Finally we find the winter is a great time for learning more about beekeeping so we will be ordering some more books to read in the evenings! “Wabbie alert is ON!” We’ve had some wasps sneaking into the hive which has been a worry. Because it’s a new bee colony and the weather has been so wet since we got them, they’re an easy target for hungry wasps. Wasps can decimate bee hives - eating honey stores, grubs and even bees (they cut them in half and carry the bee abdomen away to feed their young with!) In a bid to tackle this, we… i) Reduced the size of the access point (see pic 2 for comparison) so the bees can defend the hive more easily. (This also doubles up as a mouse excluder!) ii) Placed a few homemade wasp traps nearby. (NB: I do recognise the importance of wasps and we are trying to deter them.) The next step would be to physically move the hive a few miles away but, thankfully, our tactics seem to be working and I think we’re almost out of the danger zone! As we come into October our thoughts should now be with preparing the bees for winter. 🐝 As the temperatures drop switch from feeding syrup to fondant. It will soon be too cold for the bees to process the syrup. 🐝 The longer varroa treatments like Apivar should now be finished. The next common window for treating varroa will be late December for Oxalic Acid. 🐝 Remove queen excluders so the queen can't be isolated from the cluster and fit protection from mice and woodpeckers 🐝There is a last chance to merge weaker colonies. One strong colony has a strong chance for the winter than two weak ones. Honeybees and a lesson in selflessness This hive has been sitting on the property all year, abandoned since their caretaker passed last fall. I watched them from afar, but never found it in myself to approach. The fear of getting stung was powerful, and so they sat in neglect. Today I finally found the spirit and the gear to give them a check up. I had to accept the risk of getting stung, knowing they’d act in defense of their hive. Hard to blame them for that. Like I suspected, they ran out of room in there. I did as a caretaker should, and provided more space for them to keep growing. The pain of getting stung wouldn’t hurt as bad as losing this entire hive that I’ve grown connected to. They were worth the risk, and they were mad but they didn’t hurt me today. I hope they forgive me while I stumble and make mistakes. 🙏Any advice gratefully received 🙏. The queen has definitely emerged and by the book should be laying over the next few days if she has made it back. So far we haven’t spotted a queen and there are no eggs. The bees have continued to to be busy and have started filling the comb with nectar where brood should be so my query is, what do we do with these frames as there is no room for future brood in the centre of the brood box! We are still moving the hive 12” at a time closer to its final location in the garden. We lured this wild swarm directly to the hive. Who knew Beekeeping was so much fun? The Bees are very sweet and we (husband Sam) and I are complete novice beekeepers learning what not to do (no loud noises or aggressive movements). How to get your first bees? There are two main ways to get your first colony of bees either but a nuc (a half sized colony with a queen) or collect a swarm. The benefits of a nuc is that it should be free disease and have bees with a known temperament. It will build up rapidly and reasonably predictably. However, you need to buy it and the cost will depend on the quality of the bees and skill of he breeder. On the other hand a swarm is free. It is a fascinating process to capture and hive a swarm but should be done alongside someone with experience. The downsides are you don't know what your getting, is there a queen? Is there disease? Are they defensive. Some swarms are perfect and will develop fast into amazing colonies, others require.intnesive care and lots of help. Bee swarm happening again this morning. I feel so privileged and blessed to continually witness these beautiful events happening because it occurs in minutes and you must be at the right place and time. I always hear them first, they become very loud in this process. I immediately set up a few bee boxes close by and add lemongrass oil to encourage them but i find they prefer the bird houses best. I have caught quite a few hives using this novice method and its quite rewarding. Bee update: I had a master beekeeper (who taught the recent class I was in) come out for a consult. I could tell that things were getting better in each hive during the last several weeks but I wanted some reassurance and advice. Immediately upon opening the first time she was very excited about how many bees were present and all the markers for health were present, and the same was true for the other four. After she left I added brood boxes to each hive so they have enough room to continue growing. She@will come back in early November to help “winterize” things in each colony. Color me happy! Beekeeping Course '22.... FINISHED! Looking forward to starting the next one with #nbbka in '23 but until then it's autumn & winter learning and spring preparation. And to be honest, I'm more green than the ivy that's providing all the fabulous pollen at the moment! I'm lucky to have a great bee-buddy in @ziaja.r and some amazing mentor help from @nicks_bees & @razzzbery . Joining NBBKA has already been educational and social and I'm looking forward to being a part of their community too. So autumn. What to do? I'm checking my sugar syrup and have hopefully eradicated the ants. Still not sure of the hive legs in white vinegar situation as there have been some bee casualties. Any suggestions most gratefully received! I appear to only have about five 'busy' frames in the brood box ( the super is underneath ) so maybe my colony is sparse / weak ? I just don't know. We've been starting to see the ivy flower. This is one of the last big sources of food for the bees. Last week, we did a walk away split with one of our hives. It was so full, active, and strong enough that it was time. The nuc (new baby hive) stayed in a smaller box for a week. Then AJ & John placed the frames in this new hive box a couple days ago.
