Occasionally, when I'm out looking for one subject, another equally exciting animal will appear instead. This happened earlier this week when I was looking for the local roe deer in the woods and fields and found a fox instead. This was also the case back in May 2022 when this #FoxOfTheDay showed up in the field above the train line. Unfortunately, in this image a blade of grass is partially obscuring the fox’s eye. Looking on the bright side, between the long grass in the fields and the vegetation in the woods, I'm now highly practiced in locking focus on a subject using back button focus. I hardly ever seem to get a clean shot! If you are lucky enough to have foxes breeding in your area, the cubs should start to appear above ground around this time. This coincides with them starting to eat solid food. It goes without saying that you should keep your distance from them and the earth (breeding den) to avoid disturbance. Along with the razorbills, guillemots nest in the sheer cliffs at RSPB Fowlsheugh. They’re part of the same bird tribe - Alcini - which makes sense when you see them side by side, not only living in close proximity, but for their looks. There are thousands nesting in the cliffs here, their black and white bodies peppering the cliff side, jostling for space and diving off ledges, their short wings helping them awkwardly glide away from the rock face. I thought I'd share this rabbit in buttercups to continue the theme of #ForgottenMammals for #NationalMammalWeek. I often think rabbits get a bit overlooked when it comes to wildlife watching and photography. Our hare species are rightly beloved subjects for many photographers but, having had zero opportunities to photograph hares myself, I have to confess that I really enjoy watching and photographing rabbits. I was able to inch closer to this individual while on my knees, which enabled me to get as low as possible to the ground while I also avoided disturbing the rabbit. Rabbits aren’t as easy to spot as they used to be. Apparently, the fall in wild rabbit numbers is partly due to Rabbit Viral Haemorrhagic disease, which is highly contagious and deadly and has spread through wild and domestic rabbits during recent years. This comes on top of myxomatosis, although at least that particular disease causes quite obvious symptoms whereas RHDV does not. The presence of both diseases in our wild rabbit population serves to highlight the importance of getting your domestic rabbits vaccinated. While those that consider them to be a pest may be relieved that wild rabbit numbers have fallen, it’s important to note that this has knock-on effects for other species. Buzzards and stoats are just two predators that can be impacted by a fall in rabbit numbers. In the 1950s - when myxomatosis first appeared - it would have been much easier for them to find alternative prey but, with so much of our wildlife in trouble, the lack of rabbits is cause for concern. I'm out first thing checking my sisters sheep every day on hill just now as its lambing time. I turned the quad off and walked over to an edge to look over at the coastline when I suddenly realised this juvenile white-tailed eagle was 4 meters away from me completely unaware I was there until we made eye contact!! The grass is growing and we now have an Icelandic ewe with twin lambs on the croft, courtesy of @lochviewcroft in nearby Drumbeg. Part of our plan to restore nature on the croft is to mimic a natural level of grazing. This boosts wildflowers, insects and other wildlife. In celebration of #WorldCurlewDay, here is a curlew stepping over the seaweed-covered rocks on a dark and damp July day at Ardmore Point last year. Curlews are easy to identify with their magnificent down-curved beak and melancholy, fluting calls. They are a species that I see regularly near where I live. However, I never take this for granted. Curlews can aid carbon capture and help protect mudflats from erosion and flooding, but they are struggling in Scotland, England and Wales, with an overall UK breeding population decline of almost 50% in the last 30 years. @curlewaction supports curlew recovery by advocating for conservation efforts, developing and sharing resources for fieldworkers, and promoting wider natural history education. - Oyster catcher - Scientific name: Haematopus - The Oystercatcher is a large, black and white wading bird with an orange bill and reddish-pink legs. This noisy bird can be seen all around the coasts of the uk along rocky shorelines. Here in the uk, we support an internationally important number of oystercatchers during the winter with a huge number of up to 45per cent of Europe’s population that is around 300,000 wintering pairs. The breeding population in England has also increased to around 100,000 pairs, but there has been a significant decline in Scotland due to unknown reasons. With the name oystercatcher, you think they would primarily chow down on oysters, but Mussels and cockles on the coast, and mainly worms inland, make up the majority of it's diet. - Did you know? Razorbills, high in the steep cliffs of RSPB Fowlsheugh. These are one of my favourite sea birds to photograph with fantastic monochromatic markings and a cool looking beak. They share the steep cliffs here with guillemots, kittiwakes, fulmars and more, pairing up and breeding high above the crashing waves below. @espenhelland and I spent a fantastic morning on the cliffs here photographing the seabirds with a beautiful spring sunrise as the backdrop. Delighted with how this one turned out, probably my favourite yet! The Blue Tits just do not sit still for a second so to finally get a sharp image is a relief more than anything else.
