We’ve spent some time restoring this rhododendron to its former glory here @the_ammonite_garden - looks like it’s paid off. All the turf has been cut out from beneath it - grass saps the life out of shrubs and trees. I applied a generous amount fertiliser and then a good 3-4 inches of coppice shavings. The shrub was shaped up and I removed all the sappy growth, spent seed heads and undeveloped flowers - it’s looking very happy 🌱 As for its value to wildlife - it seems to be a magnet for bees, butterflies and many different species of flies. #wildlifegarden #shrubs #rhododendron #bees #gardeningtips #gardentips #kentwildlife

My favourite bird of prey (well until the next one). Just flew over and sat beside me on cliff top, had lunch and then flew away again. Kestrels can spot a beetle from 50 metres away. They can even see ultraviolet light, which is invisible to the human eye. 🔍 (Greater) Scaup (Aythya marila) One of the rarest breeding ducks that we get here in the UK and the same Scaup I referred to in my last post. I got much luckier on my second attempt and was able to try out the low angle photos again. Scaups look fairly similar to the much more common Tufted Duck. The most obvious difference being the lack of tuft but they also have other differences like having a whiteish back with very fine grey / black squiggly markings - that’s the technical term. They also have a greenish tinge to their head whereas a Tufted Duck has a purplish tinge. Very hard to see in most lights though. Swipe ⬅️ to the end to see a side-by-side comparison to make things easier. It’s one of our prettiest and smallest bumblebees, the Early bumblebee (Bombus pratorum)! They are very common in the UK and can be found in all kinds of habitats in early spring. As the English name suggests this is the one of the earliest bumblebees to emerge from hibernation each year, the queens can be seen early in the year, between March and May, depending on latitude and males as early as April or May. Early bumblebees are an important pollinator of soft fruit, such as raspberries and blackberries. They visit long, tubular flowers and open flowers, and the queens are commonly seen on Rhododendrons. We went for a long walk in Blean woods on Friday and saw lots of wild flowers including several large drifts of Lily of the valley. The first flowers are appearing so we will head back in early May when the sweet scent will fill the air.
