Un estudio de la población realizado en 2014 registró más de 2000 individuos maduros, dispersos en pequeños grupos en 12 parches de cuarzo. ➢Descripción: Es una rara hierba suculenta, suave, erecta, enana, de 6 a 12 cm de altura. Cada cabeza normalmente sólo forma dos hojas, que son arrugadas y rugosas. Es de hoja caduca y sólo es visible sobre el suelo en la temporada de lluvias, de junio a septiembre. El resto del año permanece inactivo y bajo tierra. ➢Derivación del nombre específico. El nombre específico “bruynsii” honra al Dr. Peter V. Bulbine (Cape Balsam) This South African native is a great plant to mix into a low water flower border. It is evergreen, has spikes of star-shaped yellow or orange flowers and green fleshy pencil-shaped leaves. Bulbine frutescens has yellow blooms and tends to be a taller plant. The cultivars ‘Hallmark’ and ‘Tiny Tangerine’ are more compact and have orange flowers. Though the plant looks best when watered several times during summer, Bulbine can survive on less water. It is a succulent and it won't flower as much in the shade, so give it as much sun as you can. When Bulbine starts to flop open in the center, it is time to dig up and start fresh by planting a piece of the original plant. Cuttings will grow without much special treatment: stick them in the ground and wait for a new plant. The best time to start a new plant is during the rainy season. The UC Davis Bee Haven's Dr. Christine Casey tells us this a great plant for attracting honey bees. We've seen lots of smaller native bees foraging at it as well. And it’s a UC Davis Arboretum All Star! Wait… what’s an All Star plant? UC Davis Arboretum’s horticultural staff gardens with many species of plants and, over the years, have gained unique insights into which plants work well, even under difficult conditions. Se desarrolla sobre todo en sustrato mineral como pómice, arena de río y similares. A delightfully fragrant native sunshine anise greets you at the front door as a flagstone path veers to the left, teasing the eye and stimulating a sense of curiosity as it weaves through a colorful coastal/cottage garden and disappears behind a pineapple guava shrub and around the corner, offering a shortcut to the back yard garden. As time goes on, the plants will grow and blend well with one another. The more this garden fills out, the more beautifully it will sway when the wind blows. One of the flowers in this garden is particularly mystical. As a longstanding familiar favorite wildflower native to Florida, it has come to symbolize courage, strength, and perseverance. Its red and orange blooms are a reminder to be present and stay grateful in good times and bad and that true strength is realized in the overcoming of pain. The gaillardia flower aka blanket flower is abundant along roadsides and medians in St. Johns county. It was one out of a couple of plants that wasn't removed in the demo phase. I felt like it was a perfect starting point and it was the inspiration behind extending the bed in front of the walkway and into the yard. The small patch of blue daze also existed prior to demo. The color blue often represents tranquility and calm.
