How potatoes grow! 🥔 I left these potatoes from last summer in a bag in our pantry and I forgot about them. This is a good example of how potatoes grow underground. They sprout leaves above the ground and below they spread out roots that grow new potatoes. These potatoes had no soil, no sunlight, and no water. It was a beautiful day for spending time in the allotment. Enjoyed the first Iris and first bloom on the bistorta. The potatoes surprised me: 29 out of 30 had come up! I planted them far too early because they were sprouting already when I received them in february, but they did fine even though the allotment is mostly shaded and therefore colder. The berry bush is already loaden with fruit, and the raspberries also looked promising despite not pruning them. I took up growing fruit last year, and though I grew a few vegetables too the artichokes are the only one I decided are worth it. I’m not exactly sure why since I can buy them in the grocery store. The carrots, sweet potatoes and watermelon radishes were all easy to grow, but the artichokes I struggled to grow. Of the twelve I planted only three are still growing. The first twelve were thriving until the gophers started yanking them underground. I tried so many ways to live in peace with the gophers while still protecting my young artichoke plants, and eventually even separated them from the ideal place I had imagined them to be. Through my struggles with these artichokes I learned so much about my determination and my inner strength eventually doing the thing I could never have imagined myself doing, killing a gopher. Sure I want destructive, diseased and sometimes dangerous rodents far away from my area, but I have never been in a position to have to decide on what to do about it. I have plenty of men in my life willing to save me and my artichokes, but I needed to get the courage to take care of hard things myself so I made myself kill one. I thought I would throw up with the first one, but seven months and thirteen gophers later I am finding that I am a good hunter. I would never let them suffer using poisons and such, but I also am not going to let anyone or anything undo the good things that I am doing. I weigh things heavily before deciding to do things I don’t want to do. Killing gophers means I will not be wasting my time feeding them instead of sharing my abundance of food with friends, family and strangers. I have learned that being tender hearted can be a flaw. I had to choose to grow fruit or give it up so the gophers could destroy anything they wanted while I am looked upon as nice. In Ecclesiastes it says there is a time to kill and that gives me peace. This first artichoke means so much to me, and in a way represents the new person that I have become, I’m not sure though if I can get myself to eat it. #growingartichokes #artichokes #determination #growingfood #growingfoodathome #gardeninglife #gophers

Somehow I always either have plants that are way ahead of schedule, or tiny tomato plants that are way behind schedule. This year I’m growing mostly determinate and dwarf tomatoes 🍅 because I wanted to keep it simple with tomatoes. So far they are looking 👀 great and I’m happy with the results. Plants 🌱 are staying semi tidy and bearing lots of flowers and fruit already. Determinate tomatoes, means they will only get so tall and usually set most of their fruit at once. They don’t require a trellis or much support. I have one post for each plant and seems to be working well so far. Indeterminate tomatoes 🍅 will continue to vine, getting taller and continuing to set fruit. They require a trellis and or more pruning. Thanks to copper, I can now keep away the unbelievable number of slugs and snails. I remember throwing them over the fence, dozens at the time, sometimes up to 50 or more each day, seeing my kale and cabbages devoured overnight. Right now, my purple kale is enjoying its freedom and has grown three times its size overnight... Unbelievable! Can wait to enjoy the first leaves in a salad in the coming week. What about you? Our pepper plants have started to flower way too early. They have been indoors all this time due to the cold weather and a few of them have developed flower buds. To encourage growth, it is best to pinch off the first flowers. This will redirect the plants’s energy into growing bigger and stronger, and producing more peppers later on. I know it seems harsh to snap the pretty flowers, but it is so worth it! Hopefully the temperatures this week will continue to rise and we can transfer them to the plot soon. 🫑Capsicum & Chilli harvest🌶 ➡️Seed saving, freezing and cooking ➡️Replacing with cabbage, broccolli, kale & bok choy🥬 🫑Most are Californian Wonder capsicums. They are taking too long to change colour so I have taken them out. Especially since my brassica seedlings are needing to place to go now. Nothing wrong with green capsicums:) One of our favourite way to eat it is a making a stirfry with egg, only need some soy sauce as the capsicum and egg provide all the flavour😋 🌶These spicy chilli plants are from a local Korean grocery store, always super productive, have saved some seeds from the ripe ones for planting next spring. Just squeeze out the seeds (wear gloves!) and air dry for a few weeks until dry then store in airtight container. Extra chillis store well in the freezer for a long time. 🥬To get the @birdiesgardenproductsnz bed ready for the winter crops, I have added extra @Tuigardenandhome compost with sheep pellets and a balanced organic fertiliser, mix in gently with the existing soil.
