The face of Panagia is the incorruptible face of the eternal mother, whose embrace is wider than the sky itself. How can one depict this unique face with its reserved sorrow? Her characteristics in traditional painting are simple and yet, those great painters managed to create, with the elementary artistic means, all the tragic majesty of the Mother who mourns with unspeakable pain the loss of Her Child. On the other hand, I simply drew a face of a grieving woman. She is not Panagia, but a simple woman like all of us. She could be a mother among the millions of women grieving today in so many parts of the world. Happy Resurrection to a better world!

🎨Originally painted in the mid-eleventh century under a workshop master from Constantinople, the middle Byzantine frescoes of the Dark Church (Karanlik Kilise) in Göreme (Korama) are the best preserved in Cappadocia. Studies since Spiros Kristoff’s definitive work suggest that at least two other cave churches were painted by the same hand. 🌿Beginning with Palm Sunday - the entry to Jerusalem- celebrated today in Orthodox calendar, the frescoes around the chapel commemorate the key events leading up to the Resurrection. The scenes are a visual calendar of the chronological events of the week ahead and up to the Ascension (with the exception of the raising of Lazarus, yesterday, which I’ve placed after Palm Sunday). 1. On this day in the Holy Orthodox Church, the Sunday of Palms, we celebrate the radiant and glorious festival of the Entrance of our Lord Jesus Christ into Jerusalem. . Riding a colt, He that with a word stretched out Heaven, Seeketh to loose mortals from brutish want of reason. . Jesus came to Bethany on the Sunday falling before the six days of the Mosaic Passover. On the following day He sent two of His Disciples, who brought Him a donkey on which He sat to enter the city. And when the great multitude heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, they immediately took palm branches in their hands and went out to meet Him. All cried, “Hosanna! Blessed is He that cometh in the Name of the Lord, King of Israel!” The branches of palm trees were a symbol of Christ’s victory over Satan and Death.
