Very excited to see two of my favorite new acquisitions already on view. Japanese printmakers Toshiko Uchima (Phinix, 1958) and Chizuko Yoshida (Mambo B, 1956) were part of a group of female artists in the 1950s to form the first Women's Print Association of Japan. The two different styles feel like a great representation of how unique printmaking can be. Both pieces are on view in "Defying Boundaries; Women of Japanese Art". #risdmuseum #asianart #japaneseprints #femaleartist #womeninart #toshikouchima #chizukoyoshida #printmaking #art #museumexhibition #museumcollection #museumwork #museumregistrar

How do we build an institution that's in better service to society? What is the museum's role in addressing systemic wealth, power, and opportunity inequality? How do we make the museum accessible and sustainable without abandoning our commitment to scholarship and quality? We are reflecting on these questions and more as we set future goals for the museum. Please help contribute to our future by taking a short museum survey available via the link in bio. #RISDMuseum #RISD #Museums #Museumfield

"May: Cultivating Lettuce" from the series "The Autobiography of a Garden on Twelve Engraved Plates" by RISD faculty member, Andrew Raftery. I’m going to the Met next week, so I’ll stop in the Sleeping Beauties exhibit. Read the 1962 Short Story That Inspired This Year’s Met Gala Theme: J.G. Ballard’s “The Garden of Time”—lithub.com (Literary Hub). Other people who need to attend to their gardens: “Make America Gag Again”(courtesy of a MSNBC journalist): A worm ate a part of RFK Jr’s brain… and then it died. That explains a lot. Meanwhile, we found out Mr. No-Condom-Likes-To-Go-Commando guy, who rails against the media, loves getting spanked with newspapers. That’s one spin on journalistic integrity. If no sh*t sticks, it’s good to go. Roll that tape, Commando. Where is the bottom to all this? (Pun intended.) sigh. #risdmuseum #spankedwithnewspapers

"Defying Boundaries: Women in Japanese Art" is now on view! Women are often marginalized in modern and historical accounts of Japanese visual culture, but their stories and histories are very much present in these works. From warriors and poets memorialized in prints to pioneering Japanese artists, this exhibition offers glimpses of those who broke boundaries and inspired generations of artists and illustrators. Highlights from Mario D’Souza’s talk on 30th April 2024: D’Souza is a curator and writer based between Goa, Kochi, and New Delhi, India. He is on the curatorial team for the Kochi-Muziris Biennale and is Director of Programmes and Exhibitions at the Kochi Biennale Foundation. He is also co-artistic Director and Resident Curator at HH Art Spaces, India. Mario’s talk chronicled the lineage and editions of Kochi-Muziris Biennale, India’s first biennial of international contemporary art. He spoke to the ideologies and politics of situating and curating a Biennale curated by artists instead of curators. His talk highlighted the considerations of a curation practice that prioritises locality and a situated art practice that involves creating with local materials and infrastructure. He also focussed on the importance of transient “breathing” spaces, informal archives, care in curation among other practices. #risdgac #rhodeislandschoolofdesign #liberalartseducation #mastersdegree #mastersprogram #humanities #culturalstudies #arthistory #designhistory #risdmuseum #kochi #kochibiennale #curation

Fornasetti wallpaper at RISD Museum (Rhode Island School of Design). It’s in the women’s bathroom on 3rd floor, right of elevators. www.fornasetti.com I first discovered Fornasetti’s designs at Lee’s Art Shop on W. 57th St., about 20 yrs ago. (Lee’s is no longer open.) My son’s favorite part: seeing a 2,300 yr old sarcophagus from Egypt. We walked around Brown University and College Hill at 9pm. The ambience at night is magical. I’m really grateful for Providence. I got some really great ideas for my next paintings. From junk shop to museum. Hidden in plain sight for years in Providence was this lovely sculpture by Nancy Prophet in an old antique shop when someone was intrigued and bought it for their home collection. In 1997 Bert Gallery was commissioned to sell this lovely ebony Elizbeth Prophet with a sheered face. What happened? Did the artist want to re-work the valuable wood and remake or was she just unhappy and wish to destroy a work that was carved between 1926 - 1929 and most likely exhibited in Paris according to an article with photo documentation published in the the 1932 Crisis magazine? Even 64 years later Nancy Prophet befuddles us. Fortunately, an excellent exhibition at the RISD Museum gives you a chance to wander among works by the celebrated woman sculptor and discover. Don’t miss it! The ebony head is now on view in the exhibit. #risdmuseum #providenceart #newportmuseumandartgallery #africanamericanart #exhibition

Highlights from Adrie Kusserow’s talk, Associate Professor of Anthropology at St. Michael’s College: Adrie discussed and read pieces from her recent book The Trauma Mantras: A Memoir in Prose Poems, sharing how her work with refugees, therapists and social workers across Tibet, Northern India, Sudan and more informed her book. Through her work, she highlights the importance of recognising multiple ways of processing trauma and suffering, contrasting it with the West’s individualised and psychologised framework of the “trauma story”. Adrie also highlighted her fieldwork process and her focus on writing as a hybrid of ethnographic and arts-based research tool. She read several pieces from her book, such as On the Brilliance of Your Story, Trigger Fields and more, from her book, concluding the talk with a Q&A with the audience! . . . #risdgac #rhodeislandschoolofdesign #liberalartseducation #mastersdegree #mastersprogram #culturalanthropology #medicalanthropology #humanities #culturalstudies #arthistory #designhistory #risdmuseum

“Portrait of Antoine-Georges-François de Chabaud-Latour and his Family” ca. 1804-1806 Jacques-Luc Barbier-Walbonne (French, 1769-1860) This painting shows a family sitting for a family portrait. The mother is holding her youngest child close to her breast as her daughter is being held by the husband. The wife looks protective and is holding her child with much care. The young daughter look curious compared to the son and is trying to listen to what her father is telling her. This family is from wealth and can be seen as high status. “Portraiture and history painting come together in this tribute to family devotion. Tenderly instructing his daughter and son, Antoine-Georges-François de Chabaud-Latour gestures toward a monument to his own father, a distinguished military man and engineer. The carved epitaph-he lived and died without reproach-provides a lesson in virtue for the following generations. Chabaud-Latour’s wife, Juliette, stands beside him, nursing their infant son, demonstrating the importance of maternal strength to the future of family and nation. The portrait is situated in the landscape of Nîmes in southern France, home to both the artist and the Chabaud-Latour family.” - Helen M. “Fireplace surround” Paris, France Hugnet Frères This fireplace was crafted in 1900 in Paris. Its immense scale would take multiple pictures to get every detail within the wood. There are women on both side that are symmetrical with a landscape of the sea. These women are craved as curvy and covering their bare chest with their arms and sheets over the shoulders. As you see you might picture the top can be depicted as the sun shining down on everything. #risdmuseum #fireplace #ceramic #furniture #hugnetfreres #walnutwood #copper

“Buddha Mahavairocana (Dainichi Nyorai)” Heian Period ca. 1150-1200 unknown maker This magnificent sculpture is made of wood and is very large and it was used for worshipping within Japan. This Buddha Mahavairocana is undoubtedly one of the largest representations of a Japanese Buddha that can be seen in this country. It is similar in style to others of the “Jocho style,” from the late Heian period, in its overall simplicity, emphasis on the serene quality of the facial expression, relatively slender body, and soft curves of the drapery folds. These curves can indicate that this is what looks like a female or feminine featured presents. Sculptures of this period were generally made by assembling hollowed pieces of wood together which prevented the splintering and cracking often seen in solid wood statues from earlier times. - Museum Appropriation Fund #japan #japantokyo #buddha #culture #culturalism #japanese #wood #risdmuseum #sculpture #heianperiodarchitecture

“Seated Woman with a Book (Femme assise au livre)” ca. 1910 “In Picasso’s early Cubist paintings, subjects were often fragmented and presented from multiple points of view. Here he transforms a female figure into a rhythmic scaffold in which tonal modeling shifts through armatures of angled lines. Clues to her pose and physical identity appear in the ambiguous hieroglyphics that suggest her breasts and the references to her crossed legs, the book in her lap, and the chair on which she is perched. The subtle shift of palette from gray-brown to a soft blue suggests that the model is seated before an open window looking out on the sea.” -Museum Works of Art Fund #pablopicasso #oilpainting #canvas #canvaspainting #cubistpainting #risdmuseum #woman #picasso #france #paintings

“Colorful Peonies and Lion Dogs (深見草獅子彩色 Fukamigusa shishi no irodori)” Edo Period 1847-1852 “Kuniyoshi was known for his playful illustrations, as seen in these colorful tree peonies that—on closer look—are composed of lion dogs (shishi (獅子). Peonies and lion dogs have long been symbols of wealth in East Asian traditions. By combining this imagery with a poem about fortune and prestige, this print was probably made to convey good wishes for an auspicious occasion.” - Gift of Mrs. John D. “Nikki” 2014 “Diné society is matriarchal, and weaving is a source of great pride for Diné women. The prominence of the textile in this photo signals a deep connection to the cultural knowledge and practices embedded within the weaving itself. The figure’s pose reinforces this connection by mimicking the bold red diamond pattern. Her braids also resemble the zigzagging black lines in the eye-dazzler design. The figure in this photograph crouches in a position that can be interpreted as powerful, protective, and life-giving. Nikki serves as a visual metaphor for the multilayered and complex experiences of Diné women past, present, and future.” -Walter H. “Inherited Legacies” 2019 Displayed on a warped vertical loom typically used by Diné weavers, this portrait of Diné scientist Sherralyn Sneezer is layered with textile patterns. A testament to generations of Diné strength in the face of adversity, Darby Raymond-Overstreet’s work is inspired by Diné patterns from the late 1800s to the mid-1900s. “I use woven patterns in my portraits as a way of both reclaiming and celebrating our visual cultural aesthetic. Prompted by rampant cultural appropriation by corporate industries, I find it an apt response to show who these designs come from and for whom they were made. The works also serve as an homage to weavers and the practice of weaving.” –Darby Raymond-Overstreet #nativeamerican #risdmuseum #darbyraymondoverstreet #paintings #culture #yarn #canvaspainting #diné #culturalism

For millennia, art and cultural production have been inspired by nature and its fantastic creatures. The owl is a particularly captivating bird that often symbolizes wisdom and knowledge, but their enigmatic, mysterious, and complex nature endures since their activities happen in the dark of night. Which bird, animal, or species do you find most fantastical and majestic? What about these creatures are inspiring to you? We've got some new facades! RISD Dual Degree student Naya Lee Chang's installation "Bricked Over Windows" interrupts the Colonial Revival style of the museum building with two archways inspired by brickwork from around the world. Naya and our installation crew installed the new archways over the windows that are on view now! Over one window, a four-centered arch and glazed tiles gesture to West and Central Asian Islamic architecture. Over another window, a flaming pediment and allusion to a terrace nod to brick complexes in Bagan, Myanmar. "Bricked Over Windows" is the winner of the 2024 Dorner Prize, an annual award for RISD student artists to create new installations at the museum. Learn more about Naya's process and research for this work during an free artist talk next Thursday, April 25 at 6:30pm. #RISDMuseum #RISD #Providence #RhodeIsland @nayaleechang

Thank you for stopping by! “Nizhónígo Hadadít’eh, They are Beautifully Dressed“ - on view now 🌟 Repost • @michaelrosefineart I was happy that I dropped in to the RISD Museum last night because I was finally able to take a look at a really wonderful show of Diné (Navajo) textiles on view. Titled “Nizhónígo Hadadít’eh, They are Beautifully Dressed“, the exhibition highlights pieces created by women weavers. Congratulations to Sháńdíín Brown, the Museum’s Assistant Curator of Native American Art, who organized this exhibition. It is on view at the RISD Museum through September 29, 2024. . . . #risdmuseum #artmuseum #exhibition #art #design #textiles #weaving #apparel #fashion #craft #weaver #loom #nativeamericanart #diné #navajo #artworks #seeart #artinspires #artworkoftheday #artnews #rhodeislandart #newenglandart #geometric #pattern #designers #craftsmanship #craftspeople #makers #artreview

I went to the RISD museum on Sunday (free day). I enjoyed the exhibit: Dené Textiles, Nizhónigo Haddadit'eh, They Are Beautifully Dressed. There were Diné Textiles (when I was younger they were called Navajo blankets). The exhibit included mannequins wearing items inspired by traditional patterns, a "Barbie" doll that was an artist's response to Mattel doll and photography projected on the walls. #risdmuseum #dinétextiles
