Can’t wait to see Berlin again this summer! The last time I visited this fascinating city it was January 2018 and it got dark early - the sun sets at 4pm! That’s why so many of my photos from Berlin were taken in the dark. This time we’re going in July and it will be daylight until well after 9pm! . In the photos: - the famous Brandenburg Gate - one of the best-known landmarks in Berlin, from the 18th century, designed in the Greek revival style - Berlin Reichstag - seat of the German legislature - one of the most important buildings in Germany’s history - a sign near Checkpoint Charlie - one of the best-known crossing points between East and West Berlin during the Cold War Can’t wait to see those places in daylight! . Photos from January 2018. . To plan your trip to Berlin, follow @visitberlin or @hauptstadtportal (in German). Do you like walking and like to see interesting places that are not exactly on top of the list of “must see”? Then next time you’re in Montréal, Québec, Canada, take the metro to Jean-Drapeau and walk over the bridge between St Helen’s Island and Notre Dame Island (Île Notre-Dame) to the Olympic Basin built for the 1976 summer olympics. . The basin is 2.2 kilometers (1.36 miles) long and 110 meters (120 yards) wide and is used for rowing, kayaking, and dragon boats. Although when we were there, there was hardly anyone around. . St Helen’s Island and Notre Dame Island together are part of the Jean Drapeau Park, which houses numerous facilities and recreational spots such an open-air amphitheater, the Biosphère, a public beach, three heated outdoor pools, La Ronde amusement park, two museums, Le Casino de Montréal and more. It’s definitely worth visiting, although wear comfortable shoes because that will be a LOT of walking (25-kilometers of trails). You’ll also get awesome views of Montréal from the western side of Notre Dame Island. . To plan your trip to Montréal, Québec, Canada follow @montreal, @tourismequebec, @explorecanada, @cdntourism. If you like Romanesque and early Gothic architecture, and happen to be in Maastricht, Netherlands, you’ll definitely want to see the Basilica of Saint Servatius in Vrijthof Square. The oldest parts of the church date back to the 11th century, with side chapels added in the 14th and 15th centuries. . This photo is from May 2019, so quite a few years back, though nothing compared to the age of the basilica. That was when one of my kids and I visited Maastricht and its vibrant Maastricht University. I am sorry he chose not to apply there, because it’s a really interesting city that I definitely need to visit again, and Maastricht University seems like a great community for international students. . Have you been to Kraków (Cracow) in Poland? If you haven’t yet, you should. . The historic center of Kraków is on the UNESCO World Heritage list, and within short driving distance are 3 other UNESCO sites - Auschwitz Birkenau, German Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp; Kalwaria Zebrzydowska: the Mannerist Architectural and Park Landscape Complex and Pilgrimage Park; and Wieliczka and Bochnia Royal Salt Mines. . One of the places you must visit when you come to Kraków is the Wawel Royal Castle, built on a Jurassic limestone outcropping on the banks of the Wisła (Vistula) river. The first historical ruler of Poland, Mieszko I (965–992) of the Piast dynasty chose Wawel Hill as one of his residences, and many later Polish kings lived there as well. Because the castle was expanded during different periods, you can see here many different architectural styles here - pre-romanesque, romanesque, renaissance, and baroque. . Today a shout out to a nice little place in London’s Kensington area, Baba Ghanouj, on Gloucester Road, where my daughter and I had a lovely very late lunch or early dinner, depending on what you call a 4:30pm meal. . One of these is Kafta Lamb. The other is a Shawarma box. Very tasty! And each under 10 pounds. The place had a constant stream of Lebanese people coming to pick up take outs, or as the British call it take aways - a sure sign the food is authentically Lebanese. . It was interesting to find what looks like a Heartleaf Foamflower (Tiarella) at the Keukenhof Botanical Gardens in Lisse, Netherlands, because it’s native to North America, and it’s not a bulb flower. It spreads by seeds and rhizomes. Nevertheless, it’s a beauty, isn’t it? . If you can go to the Netherlands in the second half of April, definitely add Keukenhof to your itinerary. If you’d like to see this interesting sculpture, plan a trip to Poznań, Poland, and head over to Stary Browar, the old brewery, which is now a shopping center that has several works of art placed throughout the building and also hosts concerts and other events. . This sculpture titled “Moonlight” was created by Igor Mitoraj, one of the most internationally recognized Polish sculptors. Poznanians call it the “Mask” or simply “Mitoraj.” The characteristic element of all Mitoraj's works are lips - they’re always the same and they’re the same shape of Mitoraj’s lips, sort of like a signature. If you’ve been to Kraków and this piece reminds you of the massive head lying in the side in the Old Town Market Square, yeah, that’s also Mitoraj’s piece - Eros Bendato (Eros Bound). . An interesting tidbit from Mitoraj’s biography - he was born in 1944 in Germany, because his Polish mother was a forced laborer (his father was a French officer with Polish roots). Igor returned with his mother to Poland after the end of World War II. . By the way Mitoraj is pronounced sort of like Mee-toh-rye. . If you like Medieval festivals, and happen to be in Poland or close enough to make a trip, head over to the Archeological Museum in Biskupin which includes the Piast village - a reconstruction of a 10th - 11th century village aiming to show what life in those times might have looked like. Nowadays, every hut is assigned to a different artisan - you can find here pottery, furs, bone and wood carvings, herbal ointments, and other interesting items. . The medieval festival starts tomorrow, September 16 and runs through September 20. According to one of the artisans I talked to when we visited in August, it’s one of the largest medieval festivals in Poland, so what you see in the photos is just a small example of what will be available for sale during the festival. . By the way, the Piasts were the first recorded Polish dynasty. The first first documented Polish monarch was Duke Mieszko I who reigned around 960 to 992. . The Biskupin museum also includes a reconstruction of a settlement from Late Bronze to the Early Iron Age, about 2,700 years ago, and an even older, neolithic village from around 6,000 years ago. . To learn more about the Biskupin Museum, head over to its website from @ma.biskupin. The site is in Polish, but there’s always google translate to help. . Biskupin lies in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship. To learn more about this region, take a look at photos posted by @kujawskopomorskie. . While walking around Poznań, we came across this lovely little spot at one of the city’s many urban parks - Karol Marcinkowski park. . There are many walking paths crossing its 23 acres (9,5 ha) and it includes this little man-made pond, surrounded by a short stone wall, just perfect for sitting down for a bit. . Poznań is one of the largest cities in Poland, in the western part of the country known as Wielkopolska (Great Poland), and is also one of Poland’s oldest cities. Do you sometimes see something at a museum and think - that looks very similar to that thing I saw at that other museum we went to a few years ago? . When I saw these Art Nouveau vases at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, I thought the design looked very familiar to something I saw more than a year ago at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York City. And I was right - two vases with lilac and bird decoration and a vase with lilac decoration and a spider in its web you can find on display at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam were both manufactured by the Rozenburg Pottery and Porcelain Factory in The Hague, Netherlands and painted by Samuel Schellink, the same person who painted the plate and a cup and saucer in the collection of the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. . In the back of the park, you can see the cables of the Leonard P. Going back several years, but I really wanted to post a photo of this punch bowl with ladle and cups made by Anne-Marie Robinson in 2005 that we saw at the National Museum of Ireland, Decorative Arts & History. . According to her website, Ann-Marie Robinson is an Irish artist specializing in ceramics. She was born in Lancashire and moved to Northern Ireland in the 1970s. She got an honours degree in ceramics from the University of Ulster in 1982, and since then has worked on many prestigious private collections including former Irish President Mary Robinson, Senator George Mitchell, the late Dr Mo Mowlam and Mary Peters OBE. Her work can also be seen in the Ulster Museum, the National Museum of Ireland and the public collection of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. She has also been teaching ceramics and arts for many years with different groups. Nowadays, she divides her time between making pots and looking after her three children. You can see her work at @annmarierobinsonceramics and from there you can go to her website. . To see more photos from the National Museum of Ireland, follow @nationalmuseumofireland. Quite by accident one day we found a really lovely spot in London, very close to the Tower of London - St Dunstan Church Garden. It used to be a church, first built in 1100, and then changed in the following centuries. It was damaged in 1941 during the Blitz and never rebuilt. The City of London Corporation decided to incorporate the ruins into a garden in 1967, and it was opened to the public in 1971. It is now a very lovely garden with some of the walls of the church still standing. The gardens and the church ruins are a Grade 1 listed building, meaning they’re protected from any further development, and cannot be destroyed. Highly recommend stopping by if you're in London in that neighborhood. . To read more about spots like these, follow @historic_uk although they don’t seem to be posting a whole lot on Instagram, but take a look at the History Magazine section on their website, and you’ll find more information about this spot and others in the Destinations UK section. . Would you go to a beach if dogs were allowed? Would you like to go to a beach with your dog? . The Manteling beach in the Zeeland province in the Netherlands seemed very popular with dog owners when we visited there in 2021 and it was fun watching them play with one another. As far as I could tell, all dogs very well behaved. . Zeeland province might be somewhat out of the way from the major attractions in the Netherlands but it’s a very nice and peaceful place. Views along the South Monoosnoc trail in Leominster, Massachusetts (USA). Sometimes you don’t have to travel far to explore new places. . From what I can find, the Monoosnoc Ridge Trail, which also includes North Monoosnoc, belongs to the city of Leominster. On Google maps it looks like the North Monoosnoc summit is at the southern tip of the Fitchburg City Forest. South Monoosnoc is part of the Nashua Valley Conservation Area. I can’t find much information about either place - who owns it, and who manages it. . From what I found, the word “monoosnoc” means “deep brook.” That’s according to “Indian Names of Places in Worcester County Massachusetts” by Lincoln Kinnicutt, published in 1905 and “Dictionary of American-Indian Place and Proper Names in New England” by R.A. Douglas-Lithgow, published in 1909. It might be a Nipmuc word, as it was the Nipmuck tribe that inhabited these areas before the White colonizers came. That said, Monoosnoc Brook runs through Leominster State Forest, not through the Monoosnoc hills. . It’s been raining quite a bit and the trail is mostly forest, so it was buggy, but it was nice to get out and move. . For more information about the region, follow @visitnorthcentralma. You can’t help but marvel at the skill it takes to paint what is basically black, but patterned fabric. . The original photo was taken with an iPhone, so zoomed in it doesn’t look so sharp, but you can still see that the artist, Jacques Jordaens (1593-1678), used many shades of black to convey the texture and sheen of the fabric in this portrait of Catharina Behaghel from 1635. . Catharina Behaghel was the wife of Antwerp merchant Rogier Le Witer, who as also the Grand Almoner of Antwerp. Jordaens painted portraits for both of them, and showed them frontally, which apparently was unusual in 17th-century portraiture. . I was quite excited to see his paintings at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, because I very much admired another portrait by Jordaens at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. (scroll down in my feed to see it - it’s the Portrait of a Young Married Couple) . I’m not an art history buff, so I had not known his name, but apparently after Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony van Dyck, Jordaens was the leading Flemish Baroque painter of his day. . Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam is one of the most popular museums in the city, so if you’re planning to visit during a popular tourist season, try to get tickets in advance, and plan on spending the entire day there. . Did you know that Boston has commuter ferries (boats) that cost just $2.40 to $9.75 depending on the route you take? . The shortest route is between Boston and Charlestown, the site of the 1775 Battle of Bunker Hill and location of the USS Constitution, also known as Old Ironsides. . The trip takes 10 minutes, the ferries leave every half an hour between peak times, and every 15 minutes at peak times. You’ll get some great views of the Boston skyline from the Boston harbor as you approach or leave. . One way trip costs $3.70. See more at @thembta. What do you think of this building? What do you think is inside? . We did not have on our itinerary stopping by Lloyd’s building on the corner of Lime Street and Fenchurch Avenue, but I’m glad we came across it while walking around the area. . 1 Lime Street is the corporate office of Lloyd’s of London, an insurance and reinsurance market based in London. According to the internet, “It is not an insurance company, instead, it is a marketplace where insurance buyers and sellers come together. It essentially acts as a market regulator which sets rules under which its members operate.” . The Lloyds building was designed by Richard Rogers and Partners and completed in 1986. It apparently took years to build it. It’s an example of “bowelism” where services for the building, such as ducts, sewage pipes, and lifts, are being located on the exterior to maximize space in the interior. . With all the outside tubes and steel-clad staircases it looks like a very tall factory of some sort. It’s hard to take a good photo of it, but definitely worth seeing. . When you’re in London, set aside some time to walk just a bit further west of the famous Kensington Park, to Holland Park with its 22.5 hectares = 55 acres of green space including a lovely Kyoto garden, with a waterfall and a fish pond, designed and built by an eminent Japanese Garden designer and his team to celebrate the Japan Festival in London in 1992. The Kyoto Garden was a co-operative project between the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and the Kyoto Chamber of Commerce in Japan. . These beautiful grounds used to belong to the estate of Sir Walter Cope who built in 1605 a magnificent Holland House to reflect his status as one of the richest men in England. What do you think this composition is supposed to mean? What do you feel when you look at it? . I’m glad my daughter and I visited Amsterdam in 2018 when Joseph Klibansky’s ‘Self-Portrait of a Dreamer” was on the display in the middle of Museumsplein Waterpool in front of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. It wasn’t there anymore in April 2023 when we visited again. . Klibansky’s site (josephklibansky.com/biography) says “Self-Portrait of a Dreamer features an astronaut gravitating in space, but who is actually holding himself up on the backrest of a chair that looks like it could be found in Van Gogh’s bedroom. A symbol of stability, the chair attends the shape of our body and stops us from falling despite our centre of gravity being greatly shifted when we are seated. The sculpture, […], finds its formal equilibrium in a pot of sunflowers—another reference to Van Gogh’s work—that sits upon one of the astronaut’s feet." . I did not recognize the chair is The chair from one of Van Gogh’s paintings. This empty chair feels like someone is missing. The astronaut isn’t reaching for it, merely leaning on it with their left hand. The face is obscured so we don’t know the gender of the astronaut, plus is it really important? Also, to me it looks like the pot of sunflowers was the first thing that started floating, and astronaut’s foot just made the contact with it as the astronaut started floating as well. Only the empty chair is still stable. What does it all mean? I don’t know. But I do like this sculpture. It makes you stop and wonder and walk around to see it from all sides. . You can see more works of Klibansky at @josephklibansky. . To plan your trip to Amsterdam, follow @iamsterdam. Any Irish reading this? Or anyone who knows something about Irish mourning jewelry of the Victorian and Edwardian period? . The only thing on Irish Victorian jewelry I could find is an article from 1985 by Elizabeth McCrum in Irish Arts Review, which says jewelry with Irish motifs like harp and shamrock was very popular during the Victorian era, especially among the growing middle class which was “possessed with a romantic and rather mournful sense of Irish nationalism, which hankered after Ireland’s past glories.” . This particular set of mourning jewelry of shamrocks and a harp was on display at the National Museum of Ireland, Decorative Arts & History, when we visited in June 2016. Unfortunately, I cannot find any information about it on their website. . I found these shamrocks in black quite striking. Quite a way to remember your lost loved one and display your Irish pride at the same time! . According to the signs, these are from the late 19th and early 20th century. Because the castle was expanded during different periods, you can see here many different architectural styles here - pre-romanesque, romanesque, renaissance, and baroque. . Kraków, dating back to the 7th century, is one of the oldest cities in Poland, with amazing history. If you want to visit Gravensteen, Castle of the Counts, in Gent/Ghent, Belgium, be prepared for stairs, stairs, and more stairs. But it’s worth it. The castle is quite cool, and the view from the ramparts on top is very nice as well. . According to Historische Huizen Gent, Arnulf I, son of Count Baldwin II, built a fortress in Ghent on the site of the present Castle of the Counts. In 1180, Count Philip of Alsace (1168-1191) built a new, stone castle on the same spot. . Gravensteen was the residence of the Counts of Flanders until 1353. After the counts moved out, the building was used as a court and prison until the 18th century, when it was converted into a factory complex and in 1807 housed a cotton mill. About fifty families of workers lived in the outbuildings surrounding the castle. . The castle was restored between 1893 and 1907, although apparently some details are not historically accurate. . #InterestingFactoid - the castle boasts a unique collection of torture equipment, displayed in what used to be the pantry. #Traveltip - If you're planning to see the inside, book the tickets in advance, especially if you're traveling during popular times. . This young boy, Raffaele Sansoni Riario, became a cardinal in 1477 when he was 16, thanks to his maternal uncle - Pope Sixtus IV. Later on he became a bishop for voting for Rodrigo Borgia to become Pope Alexander VI. He died in 1521, when he was 60, and his brief wikipedia biography reads like an intrigue and politics novel. But he is also credited for noticing the talent of Michelangelo, when Michelangelo was only 21. . You can find this striking marble bust attributed to Andrea di Cristoforo Bregno at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, MA, in the Long Gallery on the 3rd floor. . Isabella Stewart Gardner purchased the bust in 1907 for £6,350. That’s $1,281,401 in today’s (2023) money. Isabella's father’s wealth came from Irish linen and mining investments. Do you think this Blackeyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta) is real? It looks very lifelike, doesn't it, but it’s actually made of glass. . This flower, full size, with accompanied magnifications of the flower, style, bract, and ray flower are part of the Harvard Museum of Natural History Glass Flowers collection. . The Ware Collection of Blaschka Glass Models of Plants, as it’s formally called, includes 780 different species of plant models including over 3,000 enlargements detailing plant anatomy. Leopold (father) and Rudolf (son) Blaschka made these models for Harvard starting in 1886. . The exhibit also includes information on how the plants were made from glass rods and tubes, how Rudolf Blaschka eventually developed a process of using colored glass enamels, and how the collection is cared for. . The collection is called The Ware Collection, because Boston residents Elizabeth C. and Mary Lee Ware financed the project. . The Harvard Museum of Natural History is just a short walk from the Harvard Yard and is definitely worth a visit. In addition to the glass flowers collection, it also includes a sea creatures in glass exhibit, also made by the Blaschkas, as well as many other exhibits. Follow @harvardmuseum for more information, and might as well follow their shop too, at @shop_hmnh - where you can buy gorgeous botanical prints. . Yesterday was the perfect weather to admire Boston and Cambridge, watch the sun set, and then the lights turning on all over both cities. . The observation deck, View Boston, @view_boston, on top of the Prudential Center, opened recently and perhaps it’s not mentioned in enough guidebooks and on tourist websites yet because there were no lines, and there weren’t really that many people on both levels, although the bar level, with comfy couches and chairs seemed a bit more popular. . I miss the dioramas of old Boston that used to be at the old observation deck (I’m dating myself herer), but nevertheless it’s fun to see Boston (and Cambridge) from up above. . #TravelTip - if you’re looking for MIT from the area where the MIT miniature is, you won’t see it - MIT is across the river in Cambridge. Also, you can’t see Harvard from ViewBoston. . To plan a trip to Boston, follow @meetbostonusa. Don’t forget about the city on the other side of the river - Cambridge, MA. Just another gorgeous tulip from the Keukenhof Botanical Gardens in Lisse, Netherlands. We took over 300 photos :D so I’ll be posting those for a while. . If you can go to the Netherlands in the second half of April, definitely add to your itinerary the Keukenhof Botanical Gardens in Lisse, Netherlands, just about a one-hour ride on the bus from Amsterdam. You can pick up the bus in Amsterdam in several places. We got the one leaving from the Schiphol Airport and the path to the bus stop was very well marked. I wouldn’t recommend driving, if you can take the bus - the parking lot was very busy. . Thanks @casualtravelers! Posted @withregram • @casualtravelers Have you ever wondered what life was like for the Europeans who settled in the 1600s in what is now called the state of Massachusetts (in the United States of America)? . Here you see a glimpse into the past - a close up of a shelf in one of the small, one-room, timber-framed houses in the Plimoth Patuxet Museums in Plymouth, Massachusetts, with every day items the English colonists would have used on an everyday basis - plate, mugs, jugs, a mortar and other items. . The second photo shows a bit more of the room - the table with chairs and stools, underneath the shelf, and a corner with other items the colonists had and used in their everyday life. . The Plimoth Patuxet Museums is a recreation of the Plymouth Colony, complete with a village road with several houses along the road. The houses are furnished with historically accurate reproductions of items used at that time, made the same way the colonists would have made them. . The museum is not just about the colonists though. You can also learn here about the Wampanoag and more specifically the Patuxet – the native peoples who lived in this area for thousands of years before the first Europeans came. . “We must be pulled by our dreams rather than our memories.” Jesse Jackson . That’s the inscription at the base of this sculpture by Michael Alfano titled “Blown.” . You can find it at Harborwalk in Charlestown, Massachusetts (USA) at Dry Dock 2, between Baxter Rd. and Terry Ring near 1st Ave, near the end of the Freedom Trail. It’s one of 20 sculptures along a one-mile+ stretch of the Boston Harborwalk starting near the USS Constitution (Boston’s Charlestown Navy Yard on 1st Ave., between Constitution Rd. and 3rd St), and will be on display through December 2023. . If you scroll down a couple of rows on my feed you can see another one of Alfano’s sculptures “Questioning Mind.” . We found this exquisite sculpture at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam - the national museum of the Netherlands dedicated to Dutch arts and history, but its collection includes so much more than just Dutch art. . This composition, titled Carità educatrice (Charity the Educator), was created by Lorenzo Bartolini around 1842-1845. . The note says “The woman is caring for two children. She encourages the older one to read. Inscribed on his scroll is the moral: ‘Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.’ The woman personifies the virtue of Caritas (Charity) in her role as educator, a typical Italian theme. With this sculpture Bartolini contributed to a topical discussion about the importance of education in Tuscany. . Take a moment to examine the craftsmanship, especially the intricate carving of the woman's tunic - the folds look remarkably real! . Did you know that in 2020, the beer brand Corona launched a sustainable tourism platform? Highly unusual, right? Maybe we can actually learn something from this campaign ... Over the past several weeks, we’ve looked more closely at what defines a casual traveler, why casual travelers matter, how we can bridge the gap with these travelers, and how strategic and intentional storytelling can be used to help bridge this gap. In this fifth and final episode of The Casual Traveler, I take a deep dive into how creative collaborations and partnerships can be used to reach this important subset of travelers. #CasualTravelers #TourismBusiness #TourismCollaboration #Collaboration

Those of us working in the tourism industry may be thinking about travel and sustainable tourism day in and day out. But here’s the thing: Most people are not. When those of us working in the tourism industry are talking about travelers, they mean capital-T Traveler. These are people who show an interest in traveling, are engaged with their travel experiences, and actively think about the act of travel. They are people who engage with travel content, may be aware of new trends, and even self-identify as travelers. But beyond Travelers, there are a lot more lowercase-T travelers. These are people who always visit the same destination, don’t think much about going from here to there, drive the same routes, or leave the planning to someone else. Those working in the tourism industry might not think much about these casual travelers … but they should! In this episode of the IG Video series The Casual Traveler, I dive into why they matter. #CasualTravelers #LeisureTravelers #Tourism #TourismBusiness

You can see this unusual fountain, called God, our Father, on the Rainbow, by Sweden’s famous sculptor, Carl Milles, when you take Stockholm's shuttle ferry 80. The price is just a regular public transportation ticket and the views are great! . The sculpture was designed in 1946 for the United Nations in New York City, where it was supposed to stand right on the East River. However, due to lack of finances, the sculpture was not built as originally planned. This 18 meters (60 ft.) high sculpture was built in 1995, but Carl Milles, who passed away in 1955 never got to see it. You can see a small model of the same sculpture, as well as many others, at the Millesgården, a museum that includes the artist’s home, an antique collection, a vast sculpture garden, and an art gallery, located on the island of Lidingö east of Stockholm. . If you'd like to read our post about sightseeing Stockholm from the ferry (in May 2019), copy and paste http://casualtraveler.com/2019/05/30/stockholm-from-the-ferry-route-80-nybroplan-nacka-lidingo-frihamnen/. .
